Up for sale is a 1978 Subaru GL Wagon 4WD. An original California car, one in this mechanical shape is quite rare. The body with original paint is in fair condition, with small amounts of rust on the front fenders, front sills, the hatch, and some small rust on the rear panel behind the bumper. The paint and body has numerous scratches, dings, and general paint issues. The interior is also in fair condition, with torn covering on the driver's seat, a cracked dash, and worn rear carpet. The rare factory heavy duty 'winch' front bumper is installed on the car. The front carpet was replaced with a homemade piece to limit road noise, rear and hatch area carpets are original in somewhat poor condition. All seatbelts are original and function well, with shoulder belts in the front and retracting lap belts in the rear. Front as well as rear wiper/washer units function perfectly, the rear washer bag is in near perfect condition. All door seals are soft and seal well, with minimal tearing, and a new windshield seal has been installed. The original AM Radio functions, though it is quite noisy. The original toolkit (with extras specific to the 4WD model), as well as a 1978-era AAA Southern California owner's kit and factory service & rebuild manuals specific to the car are included. The dealer-installed A/C is mostly complete, any removed parts will be included with the car. The car's original as-sold blue California plates are included, and they may be able to be attached to the vehicle. It has a clean California title, as well as passed smog with flying colors, the certificate is valid under the end of August. Where this car really shines is the mechanical restoration. An ATK rebuilt engine new in the crate was sourced, as well a new Hitachi DCJ-306 carburetor was installed. Any service items that were worn at all were replaced or reconditioned. There are very few modifications to the car that deviated from its originality, I added a relay to the factory fan switch, and a coolant overflow bottle, both which improve its hot-weather cooling system performance. for I've personally put over 2500 miles on the car since registering it, using it for a 45 mile commute in the local mountains with no issues. For fuel economy, it gets high 20s in the city and in the mid 30s on the highway. Given the lack of overdrive, its fuel economy is spectacular.
