Fast, sorted and extremely clean 1988 M5. An original southern car with no accident history and original panels. One would be hard pressed to find an E28 M5 that is this well mechanically sorted. Every part that has been used on this M5 has either been NOS from BMW or from an OEM BMW supplier and there are receipts for all of them. EXTERIOR Paint is a 7 out of 10 or what some may refer to as "driver quality". This is due to very fine heat cracking on the hood and sunroof panel. Driver's door and left rear door both have small dings. There are two small spots of rust at the base of the rear windshield seal as seen in the photos. The spots were treated over a year ago and have not grown but eventually it would be wise to remove the glass and have this portion painted. The front windshield, seal and black moldings were all replaced 1 year ago and the glass remains perfect. The rear windshield black moldings were also replaced at this time. In addition the front grill assemblies, front and rear bumper moldings and lamp lenses have been replaced with genuine BMW parts. Upgrades to the lighting systems include genuine Hella european low and high beam lamps with replaceable H1 bulbs. Front fog lamp lenses have been replaced with new BMW assemblies as well. INTERIOR The interior is in excellent condition. There dash is crack free as are the other trim pieces that usually succumb to cracking or peeling. The back seat has a small tear in the seat bottom and the upper portion of the seat back does have cracking from the sun. New interior pieces include ALL FOUR original BMW door seals (just off backorder), an original shift knob/boot, all four upper door panel trims, front seat belt receivers and leather emergency brake handle. All interior electrics work as they should including lights, seat functions, sunroof, windows (both rear regulators are new in the past year), on board computer functions and cruise control. The air conditioning is outstanding and cools quite well even in the high Georgia heat. In the past year a new condenser and receiver drier were installed. SUSPENSION The rear self leveling was removed by a previous owner and replaced with standard springs and Bilstein heavy duty shocks. At that time the following components were replaced:Timing chain, guide rails, S50 chain tensioner, oil pump chain and sprocketOil pan gasketWater pumpOil cooler hosesRadiator (Behr)EVERY cooling system hose in the engine bay along with new BMW clampsHydro Brake booster at firewall (due to leakage)Engine breather hosesThrottle body bootsIntake plenum thoroughly cleanedOil pressure switchFuel supply hosesNew throttle and cruise cablesMotronic RPM and TDC sensorsIntake camshaft upgraded to S38 B36 camshaft (longer duration)In July of 2014 the rear muffler was replaced with an original BMW part and at that time I also upgraded to the highly sought after M88 Euro headers which were mated to the stock catalytic converter providing improved power without sacrificing emissions.A full inspection II service was performed in June of 2014. This car will not disappoint. I have enjoyed every minute of driving it and would not hesitate to take it on a road trip just to listen to the engine growl as you roll into the throttle. If you've driven one then you know what I mean and if you haven't then perhaps now is your opportunity. BMW will never make cars like this again and with only 1200 brought to the United States there are fewer examples left that don't require a lot of initial work just to get them into some state of reliability. With this M5 the work has been done. Fly in, drive it home with peace of mind and enjoy knowing that you won't be making a "plan" with your mechanic on how to fix up your new toy. Just enjoy.
