Vehicle Detail
1979 Porsche 911SC Targa This beautiful 1979 Porsche 911SC is part of a 60+ car private collection in Austin, Texas. I acquired this numbers-matching 911SC from a dealer in December of 2013. My interest in the car was due to its rare color and I bought the car planning on a full restoration. Unfortunately, the dealer who sold me the car was less than ethical and did not disclose that this car had undergone a color change from it's original Grand Prix White making the car unsuitable for my collection. The odometer of this 911 shows just 65,664 miles and the car was sold to me as having original mileage but there's no documentation. The history of the car as told to me is that the car came from long-term, single family ownership having been passed down from a father to son. The son then made the decision to "dress-up" the car and it came to me with multiple aftermarket modifications including a set of cheap racing seats, an aftermarket steering wheel, HID headlights, Porsche fender badges, a whale tail, and side decals. As a purist, even one who didn't plan on keeping the car, I had to correct the worst of these mistakes. I started by sourcing a correct set of seats which I had recovered in black vinyl with perforated inserts. I also found an original, like-new steering wheel and replaced the incorrect headlights with a correct set. The fender badges were carefully removed and burned as they deserved. The only modifications I left were the whale tail (a common feature of the 911SC era) and the side decals which, I'll admit, I'm fond of. The end result is a car that looks very original with just a little bit of swagger. The car then spent the next 18 months sitting in my restoration shop where we addressed some of the little imperfections bit by bit. The result is a car that I'd jump in today and drive across the country without any worries. And, while it's not going to win a gold medal at Pebble Beach, it's certainly a car that someone will be proud to own. Here are some more details. Mechanicals:The car starts, stops and drives as a classic 911 should. The engine starts the quickly - every time - and runs smoothly with excellent oil pressure. It runs cool - even in the heat of a Texas summer - and the 915 transmission shifts as it should with no grinding or other odd noises. The clutch is strong and the car brakes easily and in a straight line. There are no excessive oil leaks or smoking from the engine. The four Cooper Zeon Sport tires appear to be almost new with excellent tread. The car recently had a full tune-up and fluid change and is ready for a new home. I recently used this car as my daily driver for a week here in Austin and it performed flawlessly (and looked good while doing it). The car shows no signs of having been in an accident and appears to be solid and rust-free throughout with nothing but some minimal inconsequential surface rust and patina as expected from a 35-year old car. The various lights (front and rear) are all functioning as they should and the turn signals, wipers, gauges, interior lights, trunk light, and even the headlight washers are all working. It appears that the cigarette lighter is no longer working and probably needs a new element. Exterior:As stated earlier, the car was repainted at some time in its life from its original Grand Prix White. That's the bad news. The good news is that whoever had the car painted made a great color choice in Metallic Orange (a popular color for 930 Turbos of the era). The car is simply a head-turner and gets attention every time I take it for as drive. I'd rate the quality of the paint as somewhere between good and very good. The paint at the time of the color change was certainly applied by a professional, but it was not show quality and there are some areas that could have seen better pre-painting preparation. On the upside, the car appears very straight and the paint has suffered only a few minor nicks/chips since it was completed. Please be aware that, as a collector, I restore Porsches to the very highest of standards and I'm a very harsh judge when it comes to paintwork. The bottom line is that this car is beautiful, just stunning from 5 feet away, and is much better than what most would describe as "daily driver" quality. I've included multiple high resolution photos which I'll let speak for themselves. The original targa top is in excellent condition both mechanically and cosmetically. We replaced the inside fabric headliner with a brand new one. The lenses are all very good. We installed a brand new set of tail light lenses. The windshield has no cracks or chips. Interior:The interior of this 911 is outstanding. The original dash is without cracks or excessive warping. The steering wheel is like new. The carpets, interior panels and rear seats are very nice and the front seats have been professionally reupholstered. We installed new door panels, door pockets, and sunvisors and gave everything a good cleaning and some little touch-ups where needed. We also installed a set of Alpine speakers to compliment the Alpine CD player in the dash. Look closely at the photos of the interior both here on eBay and in our online album and we think you'll agree that the interior of this car is just about as good as it gets. In addition, there are many, probably dozens, of little things I did to this car over the last 18 months and I'm proud of the results. This isn't a show car by any means, but it's the perfect 911 for someone who wants something they can drive every day, and look good while doing it, while it appreciates in value along with every other air-cooled Porsche on the planet. All this 911 needs is a driver and someone to love it. I've included multiple high-resolution photos with this listing.
