Vehicle Detail
It never ceases to surprise me what you run into in the pursuit of our everyday lives. This nicely restored Plymouth Concord Fastback coupe appeared one afternoon in a garage bay to which its owner had opened to try to ascertain a vehicle identification number on another car he had stored with the Plymouth, a number of years back. The owner, a now retired body shop owner, had restored it, his personal car, and upon completion drove it once in our local town's parade and then drove it into his multi bay garage, disappearing, and not to appear again for a number of years later. I noticed the Concord, covered in years of dust, when the owner asked me to assist him in finding a engine serial number on his 41 Chevy Sedan, to which I asked if he would consider selling the Plymouth fastback to me, after having spent some time looking at it. I could barely ascertain the color from the amount of dust that had accumulated on it over time. Indicating a original 68,409 miles, it runs and drives fabulous, after having spent a number of hours servicing it, inclusive of a new battery (6volt), cap, rotor, points, ignition wires, spark plugs, fuel purge, carb cleaning, all oils replaced (10/30 Pennzoil with ZDDP) brake fluid flush, coolant flush and replacement (correct green) chassis and water pump lubrication, and brake inspection. I'm sure I missed something here.... The owner had replaced the water pump and belt prior to storing it. The Plymouth P22 Concord Fastback Coupe is powered by a 218 cubic inch L-Head inline six cylinder engine, coupled to a 3 speed ("on the tree") manual transmission, and 3.73 ratio differential. Shifting throughout all gears is smooth with a nice clutch and the engine runs smoothly, with no unusual noises, knocks or smoking. As a point of reference, rated at just under 100 horsepower, the 218 cubic inch engine had only 13 h/p less than comparable V8's available in 1951, and held its own in power and acceleration. Fitted with a 17 gallon fuel tank, the engine runs nicely on regular 87 octane unleaded fuel, complemented with a lead substitute additive, given 1951 engines utilized leaded fuel, as a anti-knock compound and valve seat lubricant, no longer available due to environmental issues. The Concord's interior is brand new, having been completely redone by a local well known upholsterer. Carpets, felting, trim, seats, armrests, headliner, door panels all were replaced and at considerable cost, and the workmanship and material are absolutely beautiful, and of quality respectively. The Concord's paint, now in Onyx, two stage black, was done at the time of restoration by the body shop owner, and is very nice. The car is absolutely rust free, with no evidence of previous metal work or body repair. Solid doors, rockers, quarters, trunk and cabin floors, frame, suspension are all in excellent condition. The stainless fender side moldings were intentionally left off, providing a stylized, retro, or Hot Rod, appearance, however come with the car, as do a number of spare parts boxed up and ready to go. All of the Concord's lights, controls, heater, and gauges work as originally designed with the exception of the fuel gauge. It is not equipped with turn signals. Additionally, the P22 Concord was manufactured with an electric windshield wiper, eliminating the problematic vacuum wipers of previous years. All five tires ( incl.spare) are brand new Firestone Indy Five Hundred 14" radials, wider than originally, providing a more aggressive stance and better traction. They still sport their "nubs" on the tread and probably do not have more than 50 miles on them. Glass is perfect, with no cracks or bubbling, and all the windows, wing, front, and back function quite nice and effortlessly. This is very nice running car, 63 years new, and very fun to drive garnering a lot of "thumbs up" from other drivers. Reliable, and mechanically refreshed, it can be driven, almost anywhere. Not concourse by any means, but a lovely driver quality car you can be proud to show. A great candidate for car shows, Coffee and Cars, or simply driven whenever and wherever you wish to take it somewhere fun. The Plymouth Concord P22 Fastback will be sold as is where is, with no warranty expressed or implied. I highly and respectively recommend personal inspection, or by your contracted appraiser prior to sale. Inspections, as a condition of sale, after auction end will not be permitted. A correction for the record. Thank you to the gentlemen who provided me with this information. Very much appreciated. Chris
