For some, however, it is a three letter genetic code for a phenomenon that defies technical description. To put it another way: for them, it is the legend of the Pontiac GTO. Great moments in time are usually marked by events and people. But if you are a car guy maybe they are defined by the cars you drove or coveted. Such is the case with the car we have here… and the man that owns it. This is an absolutely gorgeous complete restoration of a very original, unmolested southern and west coast vehicle. This Limelight Green and Parchment GTO is Iconic and All American; wrapped into one striking package. Its owner is the former LA Ram and San Diego Charger Running Back and 1973 Heisman Trophy Winner from Penn State, John Cappelletti. If a car could qualify for the Heisman, the 1969 Pontiac GTO would definitely be in the final vote. What could represent strong, fast and durable better than this gorgeous muscle car from what is sure to go down as the greatest era of automotive excellence in America. The late sixties were pumping out iron that can only be classified as pure “muscle”. L88 Corvettes, Shelby Mustangs, 440 Six Pack Cuda’s, Z28’s and the venerable Pontiac GTO. John’s car was hand selected by him after owning dozens of classics, including some exceptional Corvettes, Eldorado’s, Camaro’s and Chevelle’s. He is the consummate car guy for sure and when he puts his stamp of approval on a classic, you can be sure it is nothing but the highest quality example. John’s attention to detail is all over this superbly built motoring gem from the classic era of muscle car mania. It has been sorted to perfection and will drive, handle and ride with the best of the best. This GTO was restored in 2009 and has spent every day of its life since indoors and here in a Southern California heated and air conditioned building. Less than 1000 miles have been clocked since the restoration. BODY & PAINT The original body is completely intact on this Southern beauty. All sheet metal appears to be original and the rear quarter panel seams, as viewed through the door jam vents, look factory original. The body was completely stripped to metal on this very original, extremely straight car. There was no rust found anywhere prior to restoration and it shows in what I would call a near perfect body. Take a look at all the close-up pictures of the body shut-lines on this vehicle and you will agree. All body rubber and door window felt were replaced with very high quality reproduction materials. The Chrome Rear Bumper was done to the highest quality. One of the more unique Pontiac colors in 1970, Limelight Green is a rich metallic green that looks spectacular on the smooth flanks of this Goat, and it’s also a fairly rare color. Beautifully applied over first-rate bodywork using two-stage PPG paint. The entire car was laboriously color sanded and buffed until the finish was smooth and ripple-free. You might note a difference in color appearance in the pictures attached, but there is a simple explanation. I took pictures in the morning, again around noon and at dusk and the color looks completely different depending on the light. This is a challenging color to shoot with a camera and depending on your computer settings it may appear really different from picture to picture. Having said that I must say this is one of my favorite colors. It is not dark, it is not too light... it really is just the most gorgeous color of green. The picture that best exemplifies the color is the first picture after the text. The car is sitting in John’s driveway on some larger red square tiles. It is later afternoon and the sun is still shining brightly as the car is partially shaded by the shadow from the house. You can see so dramatically the color difference on the rear quarter panel that is exposed directly to the light. Overall, I think this picture will give you the closest sense of the true color if you are not already familiar with it. Chrome, including the bumpers, trim and badge’s, are all spectacular with no issues. The parking light and taillight lenses are in pristine condition. The exceptional original five tinted glass windows are all in place and have their correct stampings. The front windshield literally looks like brand new, but it isn’t, you can tell by the old glue if you look down to where it fastens to the dash. Incredible. A picture of the front windshield inside stamping is included in the picture collection. ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN The engine is a date-code and matching numbers 400 cubic inch with 350 horsepower, mated to a C-4 Turbo Hydra-matic 3 speed transmission. The car starts right up, runs smooth and trouble-free with zero blow-by. Turn the key and it fires to life with a rumbling idle that tells you this is no ordinary grocery-getter Lemans, and this 400 seems to have endless reserves of torque out on the open road, where it really likes to run. The transmission shifts effortlessly. Mechanically the car has been sorted to perfection and cannot find fault in any area of operation. All lights, gauges, switches, windshield wipers, headlight doors, heater, defroster and AC work absolutely as new. Front and rear brakes were completely rebuilt and rear differential fluid with additive was changed in June 2012 at 59,000 miles. John has just a little perfectionist in him, and to say this car has been sorted by a master car connoisseur is an understatement. The original motor has not been apart and runs like a brand new car. The engine does not use any oil or smoke at all. During the restoration the engine bay was completely restored, however the engine paint is all original and stands as testament to the originality of this low mileage example. This particular 400 cu in engine is backed by a durable 400 Turbo 3-speed Hydra-matic transmission. Like the engine, it’s original to this car. The rest of the chassis is just as accurate, with satin black floors that show no signs of rust or previous damage. An authentic dual exhaust system has been installed. The power front disc brake system has been fully rebuilt and all the suspension bushings and shock absorbers are new. There is a brand new set of correct style white wall tires, as per the original invoice, only now in a Radial design. Inside, you’ll find one spectacular interior. The Parchment Interior is not only primo on a hot and sunny day, but it looks just right against the Limelight exterior paint. This is, of course, an original bucket seat car, and the interior seating area has been left fully original. The seat covers and foam are in excellent shape and have a nice firm original feel to them. The door panels are also original and in excellent shape. The dash pad has been replaced with a super high-quality reproduction. New black carpets match the dash. When the convertible top is folded, a matching parchment boot covers the top stack for a finished look. And in the trunk, the correct spatter finish paint looks amazingly original. The spare tire, along with a complete jack assembly is included. You really have to see and experience this car to be able to understand just how original the condition of this car is. My Mother bought a brand new 67 Firebird H/O 326 off the showroom floor when I was 13. I started driving the car three years later and remember EXACTLY how the car felt. It had a wonderful suspension to it that was a combination of soft yet tight.... just right. John’s GTO has that same exact feeling. There is not a rattle or a sound in the chassis anywhere in this car. This example is one of the tightest cars from this era that I have ever driven. If you are in the Southern CA area you must come by and experience this fine motorcar, so that you can truly understand what I am talking about. Just as a matter of reference, I have been judging cars at all types of show levels for over 20 years and have extensive experience in restoration of many makes of cars. I am extremely picky and probably grade more on the lower side when evaluating vehicles. I would consider a 10 on my scale to be a Concour Quality vehicle, just so you have a reference. This car is a VERY high quality motorcar, it is a very strong #2+ car, with a complete new seating area and door panel it would be approaching a #1 level car. This would be a very easy car to take to that level if a new buyer was so inclined. This car will show very well at the highest form of automobile judging as it sits. In today’s world of collector cars, it’s important to be careful with what you’re buying. The true investment-grade cars are those with proof that they are what they appear to be, and the best cars to own are those that have been correctly and authentically restored. This GTO is all that, wearing its factory-issued colors, and carefully restored using correct original pieces. Handsome, fast, and nicely finished, this GTO is exactly the kind of car we all wish we could own, and here’s your chance. Call Frank at 949-310-6262.
