Vehicle Detail

1985 Toyota Pickup SR5 Xtra Cab 4X4 with EFI This is a rare truck; some Toyota aficionados call this the Holy Grail. It is a 1985 4x4 pickup SR5 Xtra Cab with the straight front axle and fuel injection (EFI). To sum up the truck in one sentence, it is essentially a restored stock truck sitting on 35’s. And I don’t think it gets much better. But in the interest of full disclosure, although this truck is awesome, it is not perfect. The Toyota dealers have lots of brand new ones if you’re looking for perfect. However, if you’re into owning an awesome truck that is tastefully restored with quality and OEM appearance being top priority, then please read on. The backstory on this truck – I owned this very same truck almost 20 years ago through high school and college. I sold it once I graduated college in '99 and have wanted it back ever since. A few years ago, while scrolling through the listings on eBay looking for another Toyota, I saw my old truck. It was battered and beaten, but it was there. So, I bought it and took it upon myself to restore it to its former glory. Now, for the right price, it’s ready for a new owner. The body: There is no rust in the body of this truck. It is perfect. In looking for replacement body parts, I stumbled upon the find of a lifetime. A brand new, unused, factory primed Toyota truck bed for this truck. A gent I called about a “parts truck” told me what he had and I didn’t believe it. I went to investigate and bought everything he had. The bed had been sitting in his garage for over 10 years for him to restore his ’87 4x4 shortbed. He got sick, and wasn’t able to do the truck so, he said it all had to go. I have pictures of the bed in factory primer before and during installation. It has some aftermarket parts too that are not original to the truck, but hey, you can’t find everything original. The hood, both front fenders, and rockers are new. Doors and cab are original Toyota. From there, I had the truck painted locally in base/clear black. It looks awesome. It is not a $10k paintjob, it’s a $3200 paint job so judge accordingly. It has been garage kept since it was painted. Also, the front bumper, bumper filler and valance, chrome grill, corner lights, front bumper light lenses, headlights and tail light lenses were all replaced when it was painted. A new windshield was installed at that time as well. I have the original chrome grill (it looks so-so) as well and it will go with the truck. The interior: I can’t stand skull shifters, camo seat covers, and Yosemite Sam floor mats. So, if that’s what you’re looking for you won’t find it here. I gutted this interior and started over. I bought factor color grey carpet from ACC carpets. I bought factory SR5 seats correct for 1985 trucks off eBay from Denver and had them shipped to me. These seats look good but are not perfect, and I might add that they were a pain to find and they were very expensive. However, they are the factory logo'd "SR5" patterned seats. Also, I painted all interior trim pieces the charcoal grey it is supposed to be. I also had the console pad recovered in grey vinyl as well as found stock shift knobs, and new leather shift boot. I also fabricated a new package shelf in the X-cab and covered it in the matching grey carpet. Once you open the door, you smell a new car smell and are looking at a 1985 SR5 interior, with the exception of a Bluetooth CD player. Hey, it’s not safe to drive, shift, and hold a phone, etc. so it has some updates. The mats are new as well and are for a 89-95 truck as they don’t make Toyota mats for the 84-88s anymore (I don’t think). It has full instrumentation with factory tach, factory AC (although it has no belt on it b/c I don’t use it), factory dash clock, etc. The cig lighter is there too, although I don’t use it. All lights, gauges, knobs, buttons all work as they should. The only temperamental item is the dome light. I think the contacts may need to be sanded for better contact. Stereo:As mentioned I installed a Sony Bluetooth CD/MP3 player that will stream audio from a smartphone and you can talk on the phone through the head unit with a built-in microphone. No external wired microphone is required. The front speakers are 5-1/4 Polk Audios with a 10"Kicker Comp VR behind the driver seat in a truck style box sitting on the package shelf. It is all wired to an Infinity Kappa 4 amp (125w x 4) with the front channels running the door speakers and the rear channels bridged and set to low pass to drive the sub. It sounds awesome, especially in a tight cab. The mechanicals: The engine was replaced at about 120k the first time I had it (in approximately ’95) with an ATK direct replacement 22RE. The truck has the same motor in it now and has about 166k on it. No smoke at startup, doesn’t burn any oil, runs like a champ. I did replace the manual transmission using a local shop here in Richmond called Gearbox Transmission along with a new clutch, slave cylinder, etc. at the same time in '08. It shifts smooth as it should. The transfer case is original and functions properly. The front brakes (rotors and pads) are new and so are the rear brake pads. I also has the front hubs repacked and new bearings installed during the brake work. It also has a new Bosch starter and a new alternator as well that were installed this past year. The only thing that I'm aware of that is not stock in the engine bay is the K&N style air filter. I replace the exhaust manifold in '09 and the rest of the exhaust. The catalytic converter was new in 2010 as well. Suspension: The truck when I owned it the first time, and when I bought it back a few years ago only had a 2” body lift on it with the 35 inch tires. It always rubbed slightly on a tight turn. I always thought it had a 3” suspension lift too that had sagged some over the years. So, to freshen up the stance, I bought a new Rough Country 3” suspension lift with sway bar extensions and Bilstein 5100 series shocks. I bought the Bilstein aluminum body shocks just because I think the metal finish shocks look way better than white, but they are quite expensive. The truck sits way in the air now, as with a 3” lift and 2” body lift, it is pretty stout. However, the stock springs come with the truck, should its new owner decide to bring it down in altitude a bit. Also, the tires are 35 x 12.50 x 15 BFG Mud Terrain KM2s. They’re very aggressive and look great on this rig. A 5th BFG Mud (old style M/T) and matching rim come with the truck as a full size spare. Needs: Things it could use, or rather things I will do to it if it does not sell. I will replace the oil pan gasket as it leaks some. I will put on new Bilstein steering stabilizers to match the shocks. I would probably tint the windows and have the rims powder-coated to look like new aluminum. I had a quote on those for about $85/rim. Or, I would put some Mickey Thompson Classic IIIs on it instead. I bought a new coolant temperature sensor that needs to be installed. It can start rough when it’s already up to temp. b/c this sensor is dying ($15 part that I have). Also, there is a fuel pump shutoff switch that the PO had installed under the dash. I’m not a huge fan of this, but it doesn’t drive me crazy. I think it was meant to be a kill switch for security. The dash has a small crack as they all do. This one is about 3-4" in length right in the center. Some of the finish is about to come off the dash pad, and I would probably put a replacement cover pad over it to make it perfect. However, it still looks pretty good as-is. Spare Parts:Over the years, I've bought what I could and sometimes I doubled up on things. So, I've got new rear drums in the box for this truck. I've got an inner tailgate cover panel, vented cowl cover (between the windshield and hood) and some various other parts. Overall: The truck is in great shape, but it is not new. I should stress too that I am not in need of this money and have priced it accordingly for the right buyer. No need to email any lowball offers as this is a third vehicle that I occasionally drive and love to do so. Therefore, I won’t part with it unnecessarily. Also, the truck is for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Should you need to have this truck shipped, I'm happy to work with a shipper that you choose and you set up. Origination zip is 23226. Thanks so much for looking and for your interest.
