The Sonata shares a platform and powertrains with its corporate cousin, the Kia Optima.Models and FeaturesThe 2014 Hyundai Sonata is available in GLS, SE, and Limited trim levels. The Sonata SE is the sporty version, adding a sport-tuned suspension, sport exhaust system, rear lip spoiler, fog lights, and 18-inch Hyper Silver aluminum wheels. Inside, simulated carbon fiber trim sets the Sonata SE apart, and this version gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, electroluminescent gauges, LED interior lighting, keyless passive entry with push-button starting, power driver's seat, heated front seats, and unique cloth seats with leather bolsters. A reversing camera and a driver's side blind-spot mirror are standard for the Sonata SE, as well as a 4.3-inch touch-screen audio system with HD Radio, an immobilizer-type security system, and side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators.The Sonata Limited swaps the SE's suspension, exhaust, and wheels for less aggressive fittings, and offers a choice between piano black or faux wood interior trim in place of the Sonata SE's simulated carbon fiber. The Sonata Limited is available with an optional turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.Under the HoodEvery 2014 Sonata features a standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability. In the GLS and Limited trim levels, this engine makes 190 horsepower and 179 lb.-ft. of torque. The Sonata SE's dual exhaust system helps the engine generate 192 horsepower and 181 lb.-ft. of torque, and the SE is equipped with paddle shifters.Optional for the Sonata SE and Limited, a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generates 274 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque. It's paired with the same 6-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission as the standard engine.Fuel EconomyThe Sonata's standard 2.4-liter engine is rated to get 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 28 mpg, according to the EPA. Upgrade to the Sonata 2.0T's turbocharged engine and fuel-economy estimates drop to 21 mpg city/32 mpg highway and 25 mpg in combined driving.Safety Ratings and TechnologyIn testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 Sonata receives a 5-star (out of 5 stars) overall crash-test rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates the 2014 Sonata "Good"--the Institute's highest rating--in all crash-test evaluations except for the small overlap assessment, for which it rates the car "Marginal."For 2014, all Sonatas except the base model have a standard reversing camera and driver's blind-spot mirror.
