Vehicle Detail

Originally located in a gentleman's climate controlled garage in the Northeast, having been stored for a number of years, this 1951 Mercury Sports sedan is in magnificent condition overall, representing the final year chassis with "Suicide Doors", and has been a fabulous car to own and drive. Nicely restored a number of years back it has been impeccably maintained since that time. Its finish is a rich and luxurious two stage Luxor Maroon which shows very nicely, with a few minor nicks and chips here and there, however barely noticeable. Its chrome illustrates its original condition patina with some fading and minor pitting, with excellent stainless steel body trim. All glass is in fabulous condition, with no chips, cracks or fading, and all the windows work nicely ensconced within window channel felts and tracks in very nice condition. The Mercury Sports sedan body is in very nice condition and rust free, with a very nice painted undercarriage/suspension and appears to be a accident free vehicle. The only previous body work noted is the replacement of the right and left rocker panels, professionally and nicely done. All other body panels (doors, fenders, rear quarters, floors, trunk, wheel well, hood etc,)appear original, solid and unworked. The Sports Sedan is powered by a Rebuilt 255 cubic inch Mercury Flathead V8, coupled to a three speed ("three on the tree") manual transmission with Overdrive, and a 3.91 gear ratio differential. The engine, coupled to a nice exhaust system, sounds wonderful with a low timbre, characteristic of vintage flathead Ford/Mercury V8's. The engine starts immediately with the push of a button, and runs and shifts smoothly and quietly, with no smoke, leaks, unusual vibrations or noises. Fitted with 15 inch steel wheels, radial whitewall tires, and original 1957 Cadillac hubcaps to provide the"American Graffiti" look, the Mercury Sports Sedan drives smooth and effortlessly on the road with no unusual rattles, rumbles, or groans, and tracks straight as a arrow. (alignment) Highway speeds are terrific, utilizing the Overdrive Transmission. Interior trim and upholstery is quite nice with the exception of a separation in the fabric to the drivers seat bottom. It appears all the seats were rebuilt at time of restoration and driver and passenger support is terrific. Instruments, lighting, and controls operate as originally designed, with the exception of the speedometer which can be randomly schizophrenic, and a inoperative radio. To remediated this, the Mercury will come with a extra complete operative cluster unit and working radio, should the originals completely fail. Two additional water temperature gauges, monitoring the right and left cylinder head coolant temperature have been discreetly and nicely installed under the center dash. Recent servicing included the replacement of the oil and filter (10/30 Pennzoil with Zddp), a complete brake job, coolant flush (correct green), new Spark plugs, belts, air filter oil bath replacement, gear oil changes, and fuel filter replacement. I'm sure I missed something here... The Flathead V8 has been operated on Super Unleaded 92 Octane fuel with lead substitute, and Startron (tm) and Stabil (tm) fuel conditioner, utilized to for storage and to remediate the effects of Ethanol. In conclusion, this is a 61 year old vehicle, nicely restored and a terrific driver which has "no excuses". Its not concourse, but a high level #2 car which can be driven pretty much anywhere. It needs absolutely nothing. With respect to terms of sale, the Mercury will be sold as is, where is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Please "inspect", rather than "expect" when making this purchase. I highly encourage it, either personally, or by a contracted appraiser of your choosing. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Inspection as a condition of sale, after auction end will not be permitted *I reserve the right to end the auction early, given the Mercury Sports Sedan is for sale locally. Kindly bear this in mind when bidding. When reserve is met, I will not have this option, and some happy EbayMotors bidder will own this lovely car. My reserve is set reasonably below a published high #2 rated vehicle price, in the guides online. Respectfully, bidders with a feedback score of 10 or less, please call me prior to bidding, thus avoiding cancellation of your bid. It would be appreciated. I can be reached between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm EST for any questions. Feel free to call if you have questions. Enjoy the pictures, and thank you for the interest. Best of luck.
