Vehicle Detail
Ok here is a little background on this car.....According to the Talladega and Spoiler Registry, In 1969 Mercury used these two racing stars from different parts of the Country and from different forms of racing to help promote their high performance efforts. The Cale Yarborough Spoiler was a regular Cyclone with a Spoiler Option and painted identical to his race car in the famous red and white scheme. The second car was painted in blue and white and carried the Dan Gurney name. The Spoiler Option included the following minimum equipment: -351 4v 290 HP engine with dual exhaust -F70x14 Raised White Letter Goodyear tires -Cyclone CJ grill blacked out -3.25 ratio 9″ rear axle -Two tone roof and rear deck -Side stripes color matched to the top and trunk color -Hood scoop, functional only with 428 CJ Ram Air -Two back hood stripes -Hood locking pins -Argent style steel wheels -Left hand remote control racing mirror -Right hand manual racing mirror -Rear deck spoiler, dealer installed (these have been seen on original cars both in competition black and body color) -Yarborough or Gurney body side decals, dealer installed -Vinyl steering wheel cover, dealer installed. This was the base car and did not include other options such as disc brakes or power steering. However, unlike the Talladega and Spoiler II the Spoiler could be equipped with any option otherwise available for a Cyclone. That means that a buyer could add air conditioning, bucket seats, console, even a 428 SCJ with 4-speed and the Drag Pack option! There were 352 Dan Gurney Spoilers and 617 Cale Yarborough Spoilers produced, 969 total (the short nose Dan Gurney is very rare and hard to find). OK and now about the car. This car is in the Talladega and Spoiler Registry and according to the Marti this particular came with: Two-Tone Paint, Cyclone Spoiler, Dan Gurney Special, F70x14 Traction Tires w/Raised White Letters, Console, Power Front Disc Brakes, Power Steering, Hood Pins, Air Conditioner-Whisperaire, AM Radio, Rear Seat Speakers, Tinted Glass Complete, Deluxe Belts/Warning Light, Color Keyed Racing Mirrors. What makes this car even more rare is this car contradicts the Talladega-Spoiler Registry as it came with a 3.00 Conventional Rear Axle and once you look at the photos of the car you will notice that on the rear quarters the Cyclone emblem is present. To date I have not seen another Spoiler with these emblems and neither has anyone else that has seen photos of the car. Seeing how the car is in original paint its anyone's guess to their originality. The car also did not have the Dan Gurney decals installed nor the rear wing (no holes in trunk lid) at the dealer. However, the vinyl steering wheel cover was and is still present on the car but has seen better days and is not salvageable. All the optional equipment mentioned in the Marti is present. Interior: All the interior is present as the day it left the factory. Condition: the package tray is faded and will need refurbished, the sail panels will need the replaced, the headliner is missing, all the deluxe belts are present and the back belts are still covered in plastic, all belts will need refurbished. The dash pad is trashed as well as the carpet. The front door panels can be saved as well as the rear panels. The upper rear seat is not torn but faded along the top and the bottom has two small holes, looks like cigarette burns but hard to notice. The rear arm rests are ok but the fronts are warped like most. The center console is broken in a few places but is present. The front buckets are dry/sun damaged along the head rests and down the sides and there are a few small tears but could be possibly saved as there isn't any foam exposed on any seat front or back. Both kick panels are broken and the visors are in the car and will need cleaned. Wheels: The tires are shot and the original argent wheels and center caps are missing. Exterior Glass and Trim: All the Sun X glass is present and free from chips with the exception of the front windshield that has chips and appears not be an original Ford part. All trim and moldings are on the car but will refurbished. As you can guess all the weather stripping is shot and will need replaced. Both bumpers are present and straight but the rear has pitting and both bumpers will need to be re-chromed. The front eye brows are free from damage and pitting. The hood lip molding is free from damage and pitting. All wheel well moldings are present and free from damage. The tail light bezels are pitted and the quart window trim also has some light pitting. All stainless will need polished. Drivetrain: NOT IN THE CAR AND ENGINE IS COMPLETEY APART. The original C6 is missing but there is a date coded 1970 C6 with the car, basically useless for a correct restoration. The driveshaft is present along with the original cross member. The rear axle tag is not visible. Here is the easy part about the engine. I can say right away that these original parts are missing the carburetor and intake manifold. The Mercury light blue air cleaner base and lid are present. The valve covers are dark blue and are stamped powered by ford. As far as a numbers matching engine I can neither deny nor confirm on what exactly which it is. I've asked, researched and come to the conclusion that the future buyer will have to determine on whether the engine that is with the car is the original or not. The previous owner was no help and I don't want to mislead anyone based on my findings. All I can do is list the part numbers that I have found and the buyer will have to raise their own conclusions as to its originality. The FE 390 motors seem slapped together like most mass produced engines from that time period and whatever was available from the engine department was used. Rods-C6AE-C, Piston are marked 390 2V, Timing Cover C3AE-6059-A, Water Pump C8AE-8505-B, Heads C8AE-H, Block C6ME-A, Exhaust Manifolds (both are cracked) C7OE-9431-A and C6OE-9430, AC Compressor C9AA-2875-A1, Main Bearing Caps 2AF, Distributor C7AF 12127, Crankshaft 3U and appears turned. No tag on Radiator but is a Fomoco and fits in support correctly. Also the following engine parts are there, push rods, pulleys, alternator, spare dist, oil pan, balancer, brackets, 2 wrong carburetors, basically the complete motor minus the intake manifold. All the A/C lines are still on the car and so is the evaporator core but its damaged as well as the condenser is present. Underneath-The floors are in good shape except for where a piece was cut into and a patch was installed to make the 1970 transmission linkage work, could be easily repaired back the way it was. The rails are also damage free as well as the torque boxes. The trunk floor has some pin holes and the left rear upper portion of the trunk has an old patch that was done poorly, even looks like tar, its visible from the top and bottom (SEE PHOTO). The rear inner wheel wells do not have any visible holes. The drop downs will both need work towards the inner portion, at first glance they look ok from the outside until you look under the car up into the openings. There is a hole behind the left front wheel towards the firewall that will need repaired. The drivers apron is ok as well as both shock towers, no holes cut or beat in. The battery tray is shot and the area underneath it has rust. The rust damage is even evident along the right radiator support and into the front rail area. Worst part of the car, SEE PHOTO. Body: The roof has scale but no serious dents. The hood is shot underneath but a spare hood comes with the car that is free from holes or bends. The right fender is dent free and has some signs of rust in the lower section but is attached. The left fender is free of dents but the lower portion is rusted to the point that it has become detached SEE PHOTO. Both doors have scale around the edges and both corners will need work towards the back. The quarters are dent and rust free on the outside but the drop downs will need work. The trunk lid is dent free and has a small rust hole in the right front corner and scale along the edges. I can say with out a doubt the hood cannot be saved but the other metal could be used depending on ones skill or the time/money willing to be spent on them. All in all with only 352 Dan Gurney Spoilers produced (the short nose Dan Gurney is very rare and being the hardest to find) its definitely worth the time and money to bring her back. This car was sold in Sanford NC and was purchased in the same town 45 years later. As far as the build sheet, I have only looked on the back of the rear seat as the barrier wrap was hanging down. I did not want to tear the car apart looking for possible others since they have been known to be in several places. Glove box, under the carpet, behind kick panels and under the seats. With values in the High 60's For a Gurney Spoiler II its safe to assume the short nose spoiler is close to that as its even more rarer. I have tried to be honest but I am human and do miss things, so please ask questions. I do not write 2 sentences and expect the buyer to figure out, wouldn't want that done to me. So please ask questions. I also have over 125 photos on photo bucket. Clear Ohio title. The cars rolls with ease but will need winched and seeing how the drivetrain is out arrangements would have to be made to load those as well. http://s1281.photobucket.com/user/Josh_Kupka/library/Dan%20Gurney?sort=3&page=1 On Nov-12-14 at 15:17:38 PST, seller added the following information: Also the brake booster is with the car but I did not find the master cylinder. I also loaded a few more clearer photos of the interior on the linked site.
