1956 PONTIAC CHIEFTAIN CATALINA. Rare 4 door hardtop. Numbers-matching 316 Strato-Streak V-8 with 4 speed Hydramatic transmission. I acquired this car on a trade 6 months ago from the previous owner’s son. His elderly father owned it for 5 years and in that time he had the following work done: Exterior re-paint in the original red and white; Engine rebuilt; New: exhaust, radiator hoses, fan belts, spark plug wires; Rebuilt: generator, carburetor, fuel pump, radiator; Rust area in driver’s floor repaired with a fiberglass patch (about 6" x 10", see photo), this is the only rust through I could see; New interior: seats reupholstered, headliner, visors, carpet, sill plates; New roof rail and door weatherstripping ; Steering wheel cracks repaired and wheel repainted. Since I’ve had it, I installed a new battery, new taillight lenses, new stop light switch, and new dash lights. The headlights, high beams, turn signals, park lights, taillights, stop lights and dash lights now all work as they should. The horns, windshield wipers, heater blower and gauges all work. The oil has been changed and a new canister oil filter installed. The engine starts and runs smoothly with plenty of power. The Hydramatic shifts positively with no slipping between gears as these sometimes do. The interior is nice with no issues. The paint is good driver quality with a few minor chips. The chrome bumpers are in good condition, as is the stainless trim throughout. The eyebrows over the headlights, the back fender trims and other chrome emblems show some pitting, see photos. Glass is all good with no cracks. It still needs some tinkering and here’s what I see: The door lock/latches and the window lift mechanisms should be serviced/lubricated/adjusted; The trunk could use some detailing; The radio and back-up lights need to be repaired or replaced; And for the Pontiac purist, maybe a little period correct green paint applied in the engine compartment? All in all, this is a good solid original hardtop Pontiac that has been recently upgraded, and has a little extra work still needing to be done. Comes with factory service manual, owner’s manual and clear Washington State title. Vehicle mileage indicated on odometer cannot be verified, probably turned over once or could have been replaced.
