The Caddy’s were the most outrageous and the Chrysler’s were pretty cool too, but these flat WINGS are for me all the way. We’re talking “lift-off” here... and this baby was a one year production vehicle... now that’s rare. With only 47K Sunliners crossing the production line in 1960 their numbers are rare compared to Thunderbirds and Mustangs, Fairlanes, etc. As time goes on these Sunliners will become great collectibles, especially one in this type of survivor condition. The Galaxie was the top series for 1960 and included lots of chrome. It had chrome "A" Pillar mouldings, chrome window mouldings, horizontal chrome strip on the side of the body, ribbed aluminum stone shield behind the rear wheel opening, and a stamped aluminum escutcheon panel between the taillights. Depending on which model you got it had either "Galaxie", "Starliner", "Sunliner" script on the trunk lid. Fords abandoned the ostentatious ornamentation of the 1950s for a futuristic, sleek look. Round taillights were replaced by half-moon shaped taillights for 1960 only. There were tail-fins still, but smaller ones – the focus of Ford's stylists abandoning, as did the rest of the industry, the aviation influences of the previous decade and instead capturing the new obsession – the Space Race. The Galaxie name was particularly appealing to this trend, it seems. Windshield wipers were extended to cover more of the windshield. Ford also introduced the center rear fuel door lid. The really cool thing about old cars is just hangin out with them, driving them, enjoying them for being old cars that just feel like an old car. I cannot really describe it in words, but I KNOW IT when I FEEL IT. This old Sunliner HAS IT!! Anyone can find an old Mustang or T-Bird that’s been restored to perfection, heck they even made millions of them. But how many Sunliners do you find, and this one is an amazing survivor type of car and a ONE YEAR ONLY DESIGN!! These are the kind of cars I personally love and when I slipped into this one last week to take the pictures it was like finding that pair of Penny Loafers I had all through High School and eventually had to get rid of; not because they were worn out but because they simply didn’t fit anymore. Nothing could be further from the truth with this 54 year old car for this 60 year old car-guy today. I freakin love this car. It fit like a glove and the smile on my face just couldn’t be whipped away for the next two hours. If I didn’t already have an absolutely wonderful 60 Pontiac Bonneville in my quiver this one would be mine. I am helping my friends at Blue Chip Motorcars in San Juan Capistrano sell this car. They bought it from a customer not long ago and just did some minor sorting on it to get it ready for sale. The car was mechanically restored close to 20 years ago, right before the 2nd owner bought it. Unfortunately it was an older fellow that died and all the restoration receipts got lost in translation. Apparently the gentleman was extremely meticulous and AR about the car and had an extensive archive of records. What a shame we don’t have them to go with the car. Short of that the condition of this car tells its complete story. The CA plates on the car are the originals that came with the car when the second owner bought it 20 years ago. They didn’t have a program for reassigning plates back then like they do now, he was totally convinced these are the original plates that came with the car. The owner of Blue Chip wants the plates for another car, so they don’t come with the vehicle, unless a CA owner wants to negotiate separately for them. BODY & PAINT The car shows really well, presenting itself as a wonderful patina preservation type of car. The finish has almost a semi-gloss sheen look after 54 years of being on the car. We hesitate to polish it up at all because it just looks so cool like it is. There are restoration shops out there now that are TRYING to make cars look like this one looks originally. Although if the new owner is so inclined they could easily take the luster to another level with a polisher. I would leave it just like it is and NEVER touch it. The color is Skymist Blue and turns out to be one of the hardest colors I have ever photographed. It is a very pale blue that almost looks white in sunlight. This will be apparent once you look at the numerous pictures I took... you will see the contrasting colors between shade and bright light condition. There are very few defects to the car that we can tell and maybe a few areas that were touched up or resprayed back in the day, probably early on because we cannot see any differentiation in the paint color from one panel to the next. There is a small dent and crack in the paint on the front driver’s side fender on the rear lip. We have ordered up some touch up to match the color of the car and will have it touched by the time it leaves our hands. A good metal guy could probably pick this back into shape, but we don’t want to mess with it. It’s one of those things that you barely notice when looking at the overall car. I certainly would not want to do a blend to the fender on this wonderfully aged paint. The Chrome is overall an 8.5 to 9.0, but if it is the original chrome as I suspect it is a 10 on the survivor scale. There is minor pitting on the front chrome and the back is almost pit free. The trim pieces that adorn the upper edges of the body flanks are in marvelous original condition with minor bumps on a couple of the pieces. I took closeup pictures of every body panel and notice how nicely all the shut lines line-up around the car. INTERIOR The Interior on this Sunliner is a strong 9 out of 10. The materials are not that cheap looking replacement type that come out of China. This is the real deal materials that were offered in these cars back in the day. You can tell this interior has been in the car for a long time and it also testifies to the fact that this car has spent its life indoors, out of the sunlight. The door panels, sumptuous pile carpeting, dash, side panels, etc are all in simply spectacular condition. Take a look at the pedals and the minimal wear. The sunvisors appear to be completely original, bearing their original sculpted and fluted look, a little yellowed from age but very cool. Someone took the time to put a really nice modern stereo system in the car and hid all the electronics, so all you need to play it is this small remote (see picture). They didn’t hack up anything and left the original radio in place. Now you have great tunes for a nice trip but the original look still in the dash. Looking at the remote I think it is a CD player as well as AM/FM. Nice touch. The Top was probably done around the same time as the interior and is of extremely high-end materials and in excellent shape. I wish I knew these tops better from that era because it almost looks original, but no way it could be original after 54 years. I will call it a 9.3 out of 10 and exacting to original style and texture from the early 60’s. It’s just awesome. The back window is a strong 9 - 9.5 out of 10. MECHANICALS The most obvious thing about this vehicle is you can tell it has had a life of leisure. It is still “tight” after 54 years and 126K miles. It has the most wonderful ride quality, the engine is smooth and strong, as is the transmission. The Engine was a replacement block built in 1963... a 352 300hp block we believe, but does have the 2bbl carb on it. The engine compartment is nicely detailed as you will see in the pictures. The car runs strong, idles perfectly and does not smoke. The last owner believes the top-end of the motor was rebuilt once right before he got it. The car had just rolled over when he purchased it and has only put on the 27000 miles it is showing now during his ownership. He rebuilt the transmission about ten years ago and it shifts and goes into gear just as it should. The car drives down the road straight as an arrow. The engine does not smoke and has plenty of power. The Brakes all look good and it stops well with just a slight pull to the right when braking hard. The Tires are brand new Coker Classics. Exhaust System is all brand new. Mechanically I would probably rate this car a 9 out of 10 and would not hesitate to get in it and drive it on a 1000 mile road trip. The thing that strikes me most about this little gem is the way everything matches. The interior, the top, the paint, the chrome all look like they came with the car from new and have been preserved by limited driving and indoor storage in the best climate in the world. The car has never suffered the ravages of rust or rust repair. The patina from one end to the other is consistent from one area to the other. If you love original survivor cars like I do this may just be the perfect example for you. If you are in the Southern California Area, Blue Chip Motorcars Office and Storage Facility is half way between Los Angeles and San Diego in San Juan Capistrano.
