Vehicle Detail
1972 VW Bus Westy Up for Auction: SUPER LOW FAIR RESERVE !!! AZ TITLE IS A BOX A TITLE showing the mileage to be an ORIGINAL 62K miles on the car. Its very possible this is spot on knowing the cars history and lack of being on the road for so long. This 1972 VW Bus is a low mileage barn find. Over 25 yrs ago it was driven from the Ill area to Tucson and Ca for a road trip and was parked in a garage since the 80s. This is a true Westfalia and name plates and tags are still in place. Some yrs ago installed a solid panel on the roof for some reason (which looks factory) but if you want a fiberglass factory top and pop up for it, I may know of one locally for sale, email me if interested in it and Ill find out the price for those parts) We did a tune up on it, changed some fluids, put fresh gas in and it came to life pretty easily. Compression checked out fine too. Tires are super old and dry rot. But we got it up and running well enough to take it to the next level and it will drive onto a car hauler easy enough to shipping. Brakes are also fine. Although this car has resided in Az most of its life it did originally come outta the Chicago area, so it got what I would call a few small pockets of rust, some around the base of the front windshield, the dr side wheel arch and a spot just to the right of the engine bay door is the worst of it we can see, but you will see by the 100+ pics below what we are talking about, the AZ climate has kept it all from getting worse. I still consider it a very low rust vehicle compared to most I keep seeing on ebay in the mid west or back east wet humid climates. The rubber is dry around all the gaskets and really most of the whole cars needs restoration, just depending on how far you want to go with it. Its starts, runs and drives, but I wouldnt trust the tires on it to go too far and the new owner may want to go over it one more time before making it a daily driver. It doesnt want to idle, but it drives... We are going to try to adjust the idle tomorrow and rear squeal too. RESTORE it back to stock or do a modern resto mod conversion which is popular these days. IF YOU NEED HELP SHIPPING BACK TO THE UK which alot of these are going lately, I can help get it to the docks in Tx or Ca for a good price if you need help there. DRIVETRAIN: the motor runs and trans shifts fine.. I believe its the original motor too. Plugs, wires etc are all new.. Like most VW motors Im sure it has some oil leaks, but didnt see anything huge to worry about yet. No wierd sounds or smoke come from it. It could use a new air filter, the one we got we with the car is pretty old and outdated too. I suggest a good K&N. Some noise coming from the rear what I think it a brake shoe dragging when taking off. Its LOUD but goes away after moving forward about 10 feet. Even though we totally drained the gas tank and replaced the fuel filters, with new fresh gas in the car, while the car is running and driving around it still smells a little like old gas. I can assure you we pumped out all we could before putting in new gas a few days ago. INTERIOR: mostly still all original interior with a few things changed I can see. Seems very complete too. You could drive it as is and restore it while you are using it too. Being a Campmobile it has areas under both sides of the Van that are protected by aluminum covers which all seem to be in good nik. Not sure what all hidden under there, but my guess stuff for the sink etc , water tanks and such. Tables, storage spaces, rear fold down seats, all still there. Overall the interior does need a good cleaning and could use some restoration front to back if you are making a show car. Some people love it just the way it looks.... and smells :) EXTERIOR: Original color was some sort of Yellow, but the Van has been painted at least once over in the current Blue/white 2 tone you see now. And this must of been done in the 70s or early 80s before clear coat was offered. The only place I can see any sign of previous body damage that has been repaired is a small area on the nose frontal area. Headlights are not working, but going to try to fix those too this week. SUSPENSION: FRONT disc brakes are nice, but rest of the suspension does look original except for the rear shocks but Im sure has some worn components. The biggest thing to mention: major screeching noise when you first take off from a dead stop, but goes away after a few seconds. Sounds to me like maybe one of the brakes shoes are draggin ? Although the brakes feel great and fine. But youll want to fix the noise asap. If I have time Ill pull the drums off this week. but again this stuff is easy and cheaper to fix these days compared to fixing rusted out bodies for days.. Should come apart fairly easy too Please check out our Feedback, its there for a reason and to help the buyer make an educated decision on who they trust to buy from long distance.. Also our pics are probably more detailed then anyone one else selling a Vw on ebay. We go all over and under the vehicle, and even take off wheels to get the best pics. Its a shame everyone doesnt market their vehicles as detailed as we do. Check out ALL the pics below -----> it may take a full minute for them all to load if you have a slow connection, so be patient AND looks for the extra scroll bar on the right side. Az gets maybe 12" a yr of rain and Az very dry climate. more info AFTER the pics etc. There are 100 large pics. There you have it, probably The BEST represented V dubs on Ebay. Shows you all the good as well as any bad, hope you appreciate them. We put a lot of time and effort in marketing our cars and it shows. People wait months for a car this solid to come up for sale and even if you have to pay shipping to your area, it still beats paying a body shop to hopefully fix a rusty car for weeks on end. Having as much as the original steel on a restored car these days speaks volumes. Also, if you buy a car thats been "restored", who knows what sort of surprises are hidden under new paint or thick undercoating. People are flipping cars all the time when most of the jobs are fast, for a quick buck and quality suffers. Our auctions have NOTHING to hide . YES , this Van does have some areas or pockets of rust that will need to be fixed for a proper restoration, but the body etc is still in way better condition then most VWs vans this old. NO PAYPAL for $500 deposit only - rest direct bank deposit or wire Must be paid within 5 days of auction On Oct-26-14 at 12:40:37 PDT, seller added the following information: Ive narrowed the noise down to clutch chatter. Car moves and drives fine around a big parking lot, because there are no tagson it and tires are old I didnt take it any further, but its just when you take off youhear it, so it may need a clutch soon. It doesnt slip at all though. Radio works, haha, but its old and still surprising.Blinkers I believe work, but still not the headlights. Ive been getting alot of questions about the car, and wanted to address some things here. It obviously needs some care and attention before making it adriver, but it starts everytime and can be driven around for easy mobility whileyou are fixing it up. I do have the spare wheel for it (not shown in the pics) tire is also shot.
