Vehicle Detail
I am Tom Klein, a one man band doing business as TOM’S COOL CARS a North Carolina Licensed & Bonded Independent Dealer. OK, I know you hate dealers, me too. I am not your typical used car dealer. Now 68 years old, when I retired in 2008 I obtained my NC dealer’s license so I could make my lifelong passionate car hobby a fun semi-retirement business. Since the 1960’s, hot rods, muscle cars, sports cars, motorcycles, boats and airplanes grew to become a large part of my life out of my passion for them as a young boy growing up in the 1950's. I eventually established a business selling yachts and flew my own plane while conducting much of that business. I first got hooked on Porsche’s in 1978 when I bought a 1976 911S and I have lost count of how many I have owned since. I’ve built, driven, raced and restored some of everything on two and four wheels and today maintain a small collection of cool cars, a hot rod truck and a few motorcycles. Most of the vehicles I offer for sale are simply being cycled through my collection. After over 50 years of immersion in all sorts of motorized vehicles, a good number of them Porsche 911's, I have the experience and knowledge to know a good one when I see and drive it. I don't buy or own rough vehicles, just a few first class vehicles in first class condition. And I don't "flip" them. Occasionally I offer one for sale at a realistic price. I typically sell just a few per year and my investment in this Carrera 4S will not be recaptured in full at this price. I acquired this beautiful Clean CarFax/Autocheck 2002 Porsche Carrera 4S All Wheel Drive at the Mecum Spring Classic Collector Car Auction in Indianapolis back in May. Before bidding I ran an AutoCheck on the VIN. The Autocheck Score was 97 out of a possible 100 points with, "Similar Vehicle Scores" being 67 to 87. When I first saw it I was very impressed with the condition considering it had over 100,000 miles on the odometer. I also liked the interior/exterior color combination, which has inspired my name for the car, "The Silver Bullet." I’ve owned well maintained 100k+ mile air cooled 911’s that ran and performed like new, so I know maintenance, not mileage, is what is important. Looking carefully at this car it was obvious it had been owned by a true Porsche enthusiast and very well maintained, which was confirmed by the maintenance records I received (after purchasing the car). It still smells new inside and has obviously been garaged since new. The Porsche 996 Carrera 4S AWD shares the same wide body, same brakes and same suspension with the Turbo model. Today's price of a 2014 Carrera 4S is about $120,000. This 2002 Carrera 4S which provides the same awesome driving and ownership experience for $95,000 less is one heck of a lot of high performance vehicle for the money! And, it is not likely to see much more depreciation, if any, before the depreciation curve becomes an appreciating curve. Consider that right now a nice late 1980’s Porsche Carrera will cost you thousands more than this Carrera 4S. Those are great cars, I’ve owned several, which is why I can unequivocally say this Carrera 4S is a huge leap beyond that late 1980’s Carrera (120 more horsepower to begin with) and is destined to become a very desirable future collectible. I have thoroughly enjoyed driving this awesome car nearly 2,000 miles since May. This is the first water cooled 911 I've owned and I now know I want more! I wanted to experience one with some mileage on it and a good maintenance history to see how it held up, and it has held up beautifully. Fortunately I am able to afford much newer and once this Carrera 4S is sold I will be seeking out another in the same color combination but about 10 years newer to personally own and drive for many years to come. Records document that this Porsche 996 Carrera 4S was purchased new in June 2002 and faithfully regularly serviced through early 2014 by the original selling dealer! Maintenance records from 90,000 miles to present show: -90,000 mile Service plus All 4 Brake Calipers Rebuilt -95,000 Mile Service, plus New Alternator and 4 Wheel Alignment -100,000 Mile Service including Cooling System Inspection, Flush & New Coolant -105,000 Mile Service plus Complete New Clutch Kit Installed (January 2014) - Since I acquired the car in May: -New Brake Pads May 2014 -New Continental Extreme Contact Tires May 2014 -New Bank 1 Catalytic Converter June 2014 -Full Service at 110,000 miles July 2014. This is an awesome car that has obviously been loved and given first class treatment since new. It is tight. it is right, it is fully serviced and ready to go coast to coast right now and it is very reasonably priced at the realistic market value of $25,750. ADDED NOTE AS OF SEPTEMBER 25, 2014. It has been my experience over the past many years that attempting to sell a quality vehicle at a fair market price here on eBay can be a very frustrating experience, and this time is proving to be no different. Real buyers for a good car at a fair price are scarce and are outnumbered 1,000 to 1 by dreamers and low ball artists. For instance, as of today there are 43 people who have this Carrera on their "Watch List." Not one has called to discuss the car or price! However, I do frequently get eBay messages asking the same couple questions born of the all-knowing experts on Porsche blogs, so I will try to save some time and answer them here. FIRST QUESTION IS ALWAYS, Has the IMS Bearing been changed? The fact of the matter is that the IMS Bearing failure issue was long, long ago needlessly blown into full panic mode by the "blog experts" and mechanics who saw a Golden Goose in perpetuating the scare. It has ridiculously gotten to the point of becoming the Porsche version of an Urban Legend. Here are the actual facts: Over the past decade comprehensive Independent data from a large sample of reputable technicians and owners has shown that less than 1% of 1999-2004 3.4 and 3.6L Porsches have suffered Intermediate Shaft Bearing Failure. LESS THAN 1 PERCENT! Further, 96% of all of those failures occurred at less than 20,000 miles and 99% of those failures occurred when the car often sat unused for more than 4 weeks. Further 92% of those failures occur in cars not maintained properly or driven abusively (beyond engine design limits). The conclusion: Actual data provided showed that If an engine has passed 30-000-40-000 miles, is not left sitting unused for months at a time, is maintained with Mobile 1 per Porsche, and the engine is not abused beyond design limits, there is practically zero risk of this failure!WITH REGARD TO THIS CARRERA 4S IMS BEARING FAILURE IS A NON-ISSUE. QUESTION # 2: Did you do a PPI? Yes, I did a PPI, a Post Purchase Inspection, as opposed to a Pre-Purchase Inspection. I know enough to pretty safely buy a Porsche on my own visual inspection. Conducting a PPI on a contemporary Porsche does still require some eyeball work but it is primarily now done with computer software. There are numerous computers on a contemporary Porsche that log data pertaining to the history and present condition of nearly every function of the vehicle and engine. Before bidding I plugged my OBD2 into the car to see if there were any faults relating to the engine, emissions or cooling system. Of course, those faults can be, and frequently are, reset by unscrupulous sellers so they will not reappear until the car has gone through a few drive cycles (surprise, surprise a short time after you start driving your new prized possession the dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree, and there is no warranty). So, after taking delivery of this Carrera 4S I drove it over 100 miles, stopping and starting it, and then took it to Porsche specialists, EP Werks, Indianapolis, where it was plugged into their Porsche software specific to this car for a complete diagnosis. See the question below that I answered for the results. Suffice it to say this Carrera 4S has been thoroughly vetted. QUESTION # 3: Can I have a PPI? If you would like to have your own PPI conducted you are welcome to do so. My "local" Porsche dealer is Paramount Porsche, Hickory, NC., 65 miles away. I will be happy to deliver the car to them in the early AM for your pre-scheduled and pre-paid PPI. I will hang out during the inspection and then complete the 130 mile round trip home. This will no doubt take up my entire day for which I will need to be compensated $200 in advance, which is a very reasonable $25 per hour for an estimated 8 hours. However, if you complete the purchase of the car I will cheerfully refund your $200. Fair enough? Or, if you have a certified Porsche mechanic who will come to the car I have just about everything they will need to do the job in my shop, including a lift.I hope that answers at least a couple questions you may have before having to ask and if truly interested in the car encourages you to pick up the phone. If you think may could be serious potential buyer and have any further questions and/or would like to just generally discuss the car in detail please don't hesitate to call. I'm pretty easy to get along with and someone who takes the initiative to call gets my attention much more so than someone emailing. That is the way deals get put together and done. I am also open to personally delivering, as in driving, this beautiful Carrera 4S with great pleasure (twist my arm) directly to your door anywhere in the contiguous 48 states. Then simply pay for fuel, any hotel accommodations I may need along the way and drive me to the airport when I arrive. I’ll fly home on my own dime! I can deliver at the rate of 500 to 700 miles per day depending on road, traffic and weather conditions. The car will average well over 20 mpg traveling Interstate highways. If you have a potential serious interest and/or any questions please don’t hesitate to call me at 336-372-7400 between 8:00 AM to 6 PM eastern time any day of the week.
