Vehicle Detail
This is a 1968 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter/Bus. It is a bay window, walk-thru model. Originally, this bus spent the first 30+ years of its life in Southern Texas, before it was brought to Missouri. The bus starts, runs, drives and stops very well. It has recently had some new parts installed, such as: Steering box, carburetor rebuilt, new ignition switch(switch only, not key lock), and a brand new battery. The exterior color, which is purple and white, is not original to the bus. It was painted in 1998. The original color was a tu-tone white and beige. Although the newer paint job is older now, it still shines and cleans up very nicely. There is some exterior rust bubbles popping thru on the lower edge of the bus, nothing major at this point. There is also a rust hole on the rocker panel, under the side sliding door (see photo). The only other rust-thru spots are on the front floor boards, and they are small(you can see this in the photo, when the carpet is lifted up.) The floors are still very strong and solid, and can be stepped on with no problem at all. The rest of the bus floor is in VERY good condition, inside and out. The frame underneath is virtually RUST-FREE, and the bus drives straight and true going down the road. The engine starts nearly instantly, with a turn of the key, and it runs very strong for an original, stock Volkswagen engine. I was told by the previous owner that there is about 15,XXX miles on the engine rebuild. This bus does NOT leak anything, and the transmission shifts very well, and goes right into gear. The brakes were completely cleaned and bled, with all new fluid added within the last month, and it stops very well. The emergency brake works just fine, too. There are a few things that are missing on this bus, which we do not have, as they did not come with it when we purchased it from the previous owner. They are: Middle and rear seats, rear bumper, interior pieces, such as arm rests, and a few misc. interior trim pieces, most of which can be seen in the photos. Passenger side vent window has the close knob broken off, but we do have the knob. Heating system was disconnected when we got it, and we do not have the heating parts to reconnect it, as we never planned to drive it in the winter months anyway. The bus does need a window rubber seal kit, as the window rubber seals are all original, and are very dry. You can see this in the photos. There is also a crack in the windshield on the driver's side. It has probably been there 20 + years or more, and does not affect visibility. All the rest of the glass is in very good condition. The tires all have good tread, but are showing their age with some dry cracks in them. Passenger rear tire has more dry cracks on it than the others. They all hold air, spare is good and holds air, too. Front treads match and the rear treads match each other. Spare is odd tread. there are NO factory tire tools or jacks with the bus, as they did not come with it. Overall, this is a very clean, original example of a vintage 1968 VW Type 2 Transporter Bus. Although this one is not perfect, it is NOT all rusted out as so many of them this vintage are. It is a perfect candidate for a full restoration, if you so desire, or just drive it and have fun with it the way it is. It comes with a clean Missouri title.
