Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum
This 1961 Chevrolet Corvair for sale by the California Automobile Museum was donated to us and is a running and driving vehicle. The Corvair needs to have floors put in it as they have rusted out and have holes in them.
Exterior
The Corvair has pretty straight panels. There are some rust spots on the lower portions of the doors and rockers (pictured). The lip under the roof over the back window also does have some rust spots as well (pictured). There does not seem to be any bondo on this vehicle. The trim is complete on the vehicle but does have a couple of dents on the right rear door piece and on the engine cover piece as well. The glass is in good shape and does not have any cracks. The bumpers are nice and straight and have a good shine to them. The headlight trim is in great shape and the lenses throughout the vehicle are in good shape. The hubcaps are nice and straight and the tires have 7/32nds of tread on them and were installed in 2009. The underside of the Corvair is where the biggest problem is. The floors are pretty heavily rusted out and one of the seatbelt has pulled through the floor.
Interior
The front seat of the Corvair is in good shape and the vinyl does not have any rips or tears. The rear seat has some rips on the seat section and the top of the back portion was repaired by the former owner with duct tape. The rubber floor mat in the front passenger area has some rips in it and I removed it and placed it in the trunk so that I could take pictures of the rusted floor. The rear rubber mat is still in place but I did remove the rear bench seat to take pictures underneath it. The headliner is complete but does have some wear spots on the front where the sun visors are mounted. The sun visors also have some wear on the front edge. The dash is in good shape as it the instrument panel. The door panels are intact but do look to have some damage to them. All of the windows roll up and down as they should and the vent wing windows also open as they should.
Mechanical
The Corvair starts up with the choke and idles well. It does smoke a bit until it is warm and then seems to go away. There aren't any unusual sounds coming from the engine. It does stumble slightly when trying to accelerate away which suggests it needs a tune up. There does appear to be some oil leaks as indicated by the oil under the engine tins. We did not do any mechanical work to this vehicle. The 2 speed powerglide transmission shifts as it should and does not make any unusual noises. The transmission does leak some oil also as indicated by small drips under the vehicle if it sits. When we received the vehicle we had to add some transmission fluid. The brakes seem to stop the vehicle adequately.
Electrically this Corvair seems to be in pretty good order. The lights and signals all work as they should. The wipers and the horn also work correctly. The interior dome light also works correctly. The blower motor for the heater is the only thing that does not operate.
