Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is one of the cleanest, original, 1964 Corvair Turbo Spyder convertibles around. I am selling this for my 80 year old father, who has had it stored in his garage for the past 10 years. He purchased it from the original Huntington Beach owner. Believe it or not, the last registration on it's original California original black plates is 1980! Purchased for the original owner as a gift when she turned 16; according to her, the car had vapor lock issues from day one and after a year her father retrieved the car from her, he bought her another new non turbo Corvair and kept this one for himself. He drove it sparingly over a few years to work and back and at some point had it repainted back to its original color around 1978. He stopped driving it in 1979 and garaged it. When he got older, he gave it back to his daughter, who just parked it in her garage and left it. We happened upon this car and my father purchased it. Since then, it has been sitting, covered in his garage. This vehicle's numbers are matching. It has the ultra rare power top, that functions perfectly. As you can see from the photos, she is very original and preserved and has never gone through any "restoration" (other than the early re-paint). My father believes the top to be the original. He recently replaced the original 1964 spiral shocks with new ones and sent out the carb. for rebuild. It has new plugs, new fuel pump, oil and filter change, new engine wiring loom, new engine bay surround seals, new air cleaner, newer brakes (complete, done about 5 years ago), trans. and diff. oil changed, greased, lubed, wheel bearings cleaned and packed, suspension lightly cleaned and detailed, and probably a few other small items that my father tinkered with over the years. It runs and drives very nice and the turbo has great boost. It does have a real set of biased ply tires that were probably installed in the early 70's and while they show new with literally no wear, I probably would cross the country on them. My father removed the back seat to check the oil level in the top motor and I took some photos of the floor pans and the surrounding areas. They are perfect, no rust anywhere and the original assembly line chalk writing is till on the support panels. It is unbelievable! This car does have perfect pans with no damage throughout the entire car. Probably as close to factory new condition as you can get. The outside trim is in beautiful, original condition including the bumpers, which appear new. The body is about as arrow straight as you can probably get. Panel fit is excellent and the car has NEVER been hit or damaged since 1964. The power top works perfect and all of the parts including the pump, cylinders, and lines are factory original. This car was optioned with the very rare deep tint glass and all of it is original and complete and like new, including the rare, thicker and beveled side glass. The doors close perfect with no sag. Underneath the car is as clean and original as you would expect, maybe nicer. It is mostly the original GM finish and is clean and dry and free of any rust or damage. The interior is 100% original from the factory. The dash pad has a small crack by the speaker, the passenger front seat has a very minor split, the sun visors need the edge sewn a little, etc. Just some small stuff, but at 50 years old, it only shows age wear, but not wear from use. The paint job is an old enamel re-spray. I would say it was good for the time and they didn't sand or damage anything. However, it isn't perfect. It does have a few various chips or scratches simply from sitting in the garage over the years. Beautiful stainless trim. All weatherstripping is original from what I can tell and in remarkably good shape. The body is clean and free of any rust or damage except I could see just a couple of very small "bubbles" (?) near the front letters on the trunk edge...smaller than a pea. The top is believed to be the original, if not it is close. It is holding it's own, but the back window is foggy and has a small tear in the middle and the canvas is aging some. It definitely is still sealing around the sides and back though. The only things that I can see that are not working are: The tachometer works intermittently. The radio the same...comes on when it wants to. The turn signals don't cancel sometimes. I believe even the heater/defrost system is working correct, however my father did say that the large rear flexible tubes are aging and could use replacement at some point in time. This is truly a spectacular example of a very rare car in an almost non-existing condition. A truly original survivor by any standard absolutely collector quality. Driver her, as is, with no problems...she is ready to cruise the road now...put her away and cherish her as the the values of cars in this ultra rare condition are increasing daily. You will never find another like this one. Opportunities like this come don't come around too often. Comes with the owner's manual, convertible top manual, and an original GM touch up paint that was purchased new with the car.. Will be sold with a clear and clean original vintage "small pink slip" from many years ago...(I myself hate to see it go as it has been a fixture in Dad's garage for so many years, but at his age he has decided that somebody should enjoy it instead of it sitting in his garage... I guess I would have to agree). Please bid your best. I would like for him to see that all of the time he protected it from the elements were not in vain. On Mar-14-14 at 15:33:55 PDT, seller added the following information: I am sorry for the error in description. The car was only repainted once, in it's original color. It has never been painted a different color other than the original light cream yellow.
