Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM. This car was born a Trans AM with the Pontiac 400 engine,AC,three speed auto, rear defrost, tilt wheel. Manual windows and locks, cloth deluxe interior. I have the original build sheet from behind the rear seat. Obviously much has changed over the years. Originally white with carmine red interior. This car was a sub-frame off restoration started in 2002. Haven t met anyone yet that has been able to tell it was ever a white Trans AM. It was taken completely apart and repainted. Have over $5,ooo in paint work alone not including the body work. Both rear ¼ bottoms were replaced with metal, both doors replaced with original GM ones in better shape, both front fenders were replaced with ones without rust through, hood, trunk lid and body flares are original to car when bought in 1997. Floor boards are original to the car with some metal patch repair here and there as well as the trunk pan. Under carriage stripped and undercoated, new Hotchkis rear and front lowering springs, urethane bushings, upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, front bearings, cross drilled front discs, calipers, pads, stainless brake lines, stainless fuel lines, stainless transmission lines, stainless fuel tank straps, braided stainless brake hoses,KYB shocks on all four corners, new rear brake drums and shoes, rebuild brake spring kit, rear gear oil, wheel cylinders. Engine wise, I put in a 1968 Pontiac GTO 400 engine with matching heads,Edelebrock aluminum intake and valve covers, mild oversize cam(have cam card) .30 over forged aluminum pistons with stock(68 GTO) valves and springs, new timing chain, oil pump,Milodon oil pan,High volume aluminum water pump, Holley fuel pump, new starter, alternator, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, used the stock 78 HEI distributor and rochester 4 barrel with electric choke, new radiator, battery, belts, hoses, thermostate, fan clutch, heater core, master cylinder and power booster. The transmission was taken completely apart and gone through. A mild shift kit was installed, new seals ECT. The rear end gear is the stock 256, Yes you read that right 256. I do not race the car obviously and it runs low highway RPM’s with that gear but would be awesome light to light with a lower 355 or so depending on what you want to do with it. The way it is set up now you probably won’t beat too many muscle cars off the line. Interior wise the front seats are leather, the red part of them are perforated. The rear seats are real leather in the red color but not the charcoal color.Front seats now recline as well. New black carpet, red headliner, original dash and in good condition, new center counsel lid,160MPH gauge out of 74 trans am replacing the factory 100 MPH,AC was deleated under hood but original selector still in car, door panels are original but customized, new rear seat shelf, front and rear speakers with pioneer head unit. New sill plates. Rims and tire wise they were a used set, rear 275/60,15 front 235/60/15 BF GOODRICH RADIAL TA There has been 6050 miles put on it since finished. I set the odometer back to 00000 when rebuilt so the miles are accurate since rebuild. A lot of time and money has been put into this car. It is not perfect but very presentable. Now comes the part I hate to disclose but it s only fair. Things I know that are wrong with it. The gas gauge has a mind of it s own, think the sending unit is stuck(one of the few things I didn t replace) The steering gear box has play in it,was a reman unit, have another one in the box ready to install(comes with car) front bumper was bumped in driveway and cracked paint and bent license plate holder(see photo),rust bubbles starting on lower driver door at rear ¼,very upset by this, door jams were sand blasted, and I thought repaired correctly(see picture)also same door was (when wet sanded) cut through color coat to primer so small spot of light grey primer showing through. When pulled out of garage there was an oil spot, may be rear main seal from rebuilding transmission after it was installed, not sure though, also seems the oil drain plug is not sealing tightly to oil pan. Stock carburetor could use some adjustment. Tires have great tread but do show some cracking on side walls and with being different sizes can t be rotated so don’t run the smoothest. Factory hand clock in RPM gauge does not work. CD player does not eject CD’s very good, always ejects them but kinda slow and not very far out. You have to hurry and grab it before it sucks it back in. Driver exterior door handle cracked in half(was brand new) pretty upset about this as well (see photo)can still open door with the little piece, under hood passenger side wheel well paint has come off in a spot and has surface rust on it now, had some repaint work done on rear ¼ passenger and they oversprayed grey primer in the wheel well(shop said they would make it right but decided I didn’t want them working on it anymore). I am being as up front as I can with what things need attention with this car. I want bidders to bid with the knowledge of what all is good and not so good with this car. It is a driver as is or with a little work could be a show car. I have owned this car for almost 17 years now. Priorities have changed and time to sell my TA.
