Vintage Cafe Racer 1980 Honda CX500 A short video of this particular Cafe Racer has been posted on YouTube. This one started from a 1980 CX500 Custom (model name) which was torn down to frame for total renovation. Frame was shortened very slightly behind rear shocks. Frame was painted (should have been powder coated - maybe next time). All parts checked and cleaned and painted where appropriate. Brake master cylinder re-built with new gaskets; carbs cleaned and new gaskets installed. Engine is stock: V-twin, water-cooled, 4 valves per cylinder, 5-speed transmission, shaft drive. Stock pipes removed and straight pipes with Harley Sportster (genuine H-D) mufflers added. Increased flow-through allowed for larger main jets in CV carbs; however, jets have not been optimized and many extra jets are included with this bike. I believe the bike is slightly over-carburated at the moment - spark plugs look a little sooty and the bike needs a second or two at full throttle to clear its throat. Sportster muffler is louder than stock but not objectionable. Flat bars installed (not clip-ons, not drag bars); stock large turn signals replaced with small bullet lights; custom solo seat; rear lights (running and stop) replaced with LED units (should be vibration-proof). All lights work, including neutral indicator light! This bike was built as a riding bike, not a show bike. Tank is newly painted but new owner will likely want to re-paint. Paint on rear segment of solo seat is very good. There are many paint chips, mostly on frame, which could easily be re-done during winter. Bike is complete, starts and runs, needs nothing except whatever new owner wants for personalizing. Original top speed according to Honda was 98.8 mph; magazine testers of the period claimed as much as 107 mph; this particular bike has been unofficially hand-timed at 100 mph. Tires are very good with less than 700 miles of wear. A licensed motorcycle mechanic has ridden the bike and pronounced it very good. However, serious bidders should inspect the bike personally, or have an independent agent do so. A local all-makes bike shop is within 1-1/2 miles and could do an inspection for you for a fee. He is a certified Mass State Safety Inspection facility; this bike has been previously certified for the road in Massachusetts. Contact seller for name and number of this dealer.
