1929 Ford Roadster Pickup Survivor/Barn Find Completely Sorted/Runs Fantastic Southern California Born & Raised All Original Metal / Zero Rust Body Zero Dry Rot in Original Wood VIN# DRF58015 Older Restore/Recently Sorted Black w/Black Interior 4 Cylinder Direct Link to Photobucket 76 Picture Library: http://s669.photobucket.com/user/fmattingly/library/Ford%20Model%20A%201929 Elegance and Simplicity. Two of my favorite words for describing great automobiles. No car from that wonderful roaring 20’s era epitomizes those words better than the 1929 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup. What is cooler than having Pickup Style Utility with Roadster Styling.... 40 bhp, 200.5 cu. in. L-head inline four-cylinder engine, single two-barrel carburetor, three-speed sliding-gear manual transmission, solid front axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf spring, three-quarter floating rear axle with transverse leaf spring, and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 103.5 in. The introduction of the Model A Ford in late 1920 represented one of the most significant turnarounds for any automaker in the 20th century. The resulting Model A was a paradox: it was more complex yet far easier and simpler to operate than the old Model T that it replaced. A new, inline four-cylinder engine offered twice the horsepower, and the exterior adopted a number of Lincoln design cues, giving the “A” a fresh, modern, and upscale style all its own. Other advancements included four-wheel, cable-operated mechanical brakes, welded steel wire wheels, and Houdaille-type double-acting shock absorbers. Starting at only $460, the Model A continued Ford’s tradition of offering an unbeatable value. My good friend Fred’s Model A Roadster Pickup, from the second year of production, represents an unusual and sporty body style, combining the functionality of a hard-wearing truck with the open-top sprightliness of a roadster/convertible. Finished in Henry’s favorite color, black with black fenders, it is both cosmetically and mechanically excellent, as it was probably semi-restored back in the 60’s or 70’s... and recently completely sorted out by Fred. It is an excellent running example, following a recent complete tuning and the following areas addressed with brand new parts: Brand New Wiring Harness (Completely Rewired) New 6-Volt Battery in addition to: Battery Cables Battery Bracket Battery Tray Mat Battery Disconnect Switch Fuse Holder Terminal Box Cover & Wing Nuts Spark Plug Straps, Coil Wire & Ignition Condenser Fan & Water Pump - with Wrench & Fan Belt Radiator Recored - 2009 Two Brand New Front Tires & Tubes (Rear Tires & Tubes Like New) Outside Mirror Engine Crank Handle Interior Rubber Floor Mat Fred is a retired fireman and ex-Baja Off-Road Racer. He has built some amazing vehicles over in his garage over the years and I have always been fascinated by his over-attention to detail. Do the initials “A-R” mean anything to you? The nice thing about someone that is AR is things get done and they get done right. If that means he has to do it over and over again until it is perfect, then that is what happens. This Pick-up has been sorted well by one amazing mechanic. Fred’s little ‘29er is unique in many ways. First, it is truly a survivor, boasting all of it’s original metal. All of the wood also appears to be original to the car and in very good condition. We could not find any dry rot anywhere in the wood. This vehicle has lived it’s life in Southern California and it shows from the amazing condition of this no rust, no damage body, trim and undercarriage. While we don’t have a complete ownership history it recently came out of a 60 car collection in Southern California. The last owner had the car for over 25 years and drove it occasionally to church. He apparently bought the truck out in Hesperia in the 60’s. It is presumed that the vehicle went thru a period correct type of modest restoration back in the 60’s or 70’s sometime. It was painted well, but more over resembles the type and style of paint that would have come on the car from the factory. Vehicles go through varying degrees of restoration; what I notice is many times some components are done and others are left original. This can sometimes lead to what we call a “mismatched” restoration. It just does not come together as a complete package. What struck me immediately on this little Roadster was the uniformity we found in every area of the vehicle. Simply put, everything was attended to in this truck at some time. When your eye goes from exterior paint to interior paint or door rubber or glass to trim or bumpers to undercarriage or exhaust, everything has a matching period look to it. It has that familiar look and feel to the day it rolled off the assembly line. The vehicle comes with receipts verifying the recent upgrades. It also comes with a small restoration booklet and Murray Fahnestock’s Book on Model A, published in 1958. A Wiring Diagram, Parts Books and Catalogs are included as well. BODY & PAINT The Body and Paint on this example is extremely nice; rating it a solid 8 out of 10. The body is all original metal and never looked to have been messed with or damaged in any way. Everything lines up exactly like it should. There are ZERO signs of rust repair or body damage anywhere on this vehicle. Upon close inspection of the body panels you will notice the entire body to be straight and nice. The tailgate has a few waves in it but adds to the overall patina “look” of this Roadster. The paint looks to be older enamel to me, but I am not 100%. It has a very original period look to it. While one can certainly appreciate really gorgeous ground-up restorations, there is just something really cool about vehicles from this pre-war period that have not been over-restored. INTERIOR The Interior on this vehicle looks almost like it could be original, but it just seems doubtful that it is. The seat material looks correct for the 20’s and has a wonderful look to it. The wood in the interior cockpit and up behind the seat where the top comes down looks to be all original from the factory. The wood in the bed looks really nice and has been refinished most likely many years ago. Fred replaced the rubber mat on the floorboard. He also put a new reproduction chrome instrument panel surround on it to dress it up some, and the original will come with a box of parts. The gauges look completely original and work. Fred installed a new amp meter. DRIVETRAIN This little four-banger rocks. It runs, shifts and drives as it should. It drives down the road straight and true. The three speed trans and clutch work smoothly and easily and is a lot of fun to drive. We don’t know when or if the engine was rebuilt, but we know it runs well and seems to have no issues. Fred went threw everything and replaced and renewed whatever needed addressing. The Undercarriage on this fine example is clean and tidy and looks to have been painted probably the same time as the car. The exhaust system was replaced recently and looks almost brand new. This 29 Roadster Pickup has it all and you will not be disappointed with any aspect of how it looks and drives. We would rate this vehicle as a Show Driver. Is it a Concour Nut & Bolt Restoration? No, but you will be proud of this vehicle no matter if you are driving it around town, using it as your Company Advertising Moniker or taking it to a Ford Collector Meet thousands of miles away. This little Buggy has the charm and patina of a time capsule car, yet the drivability of a restored vehicle. Get in it and go!!! Highly desirable and quite rare today, this 1929 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup is a perfect collector car for the novice or expert alike, as it is both usable and very enjoyable, and it provides the owner with the option of open-air touring.
