Doug's 1972 Red Porsche 914QUESTION #1 - Why am I finally selling my little Go Kart-like handling toy after all these years?I guess because now I am 74 years old. When I bought the car brand-new in 1972, I was only 33 years old. Nowadays, I have learned to appreciate air-conditioning and automatic transmission, which the 914 has neither. I hate to admit it, but I haven't removed the roof in at least a dozen years in order to drive it around in the convertible (with its built in roll bar) mode. Maybe I have become a geezer? :-(There are good things and bad things with my 914. I'll try to remember and discuss as many as possible, so you understand what you are getting if you are the buyer.GOOD:#1 - It is a one owner car, a California car, has always been kept in the garage and always covered. My wife, Karen, and I have lived in the same house in Irvine, California for 36 years. Ask her; she knows. #2 - For some unknown reason, I have kept every single receipt related to my 914 from day one and will be happy to pass that stack on to the next owner. #3 - Only reason I kept it this long is because in 1977 while volunteering as a chaperone to the MGM high school kids (including daughter Kim) in Yosemite National Park I got to know another chaperone - Gary, the owner of Cooper Automotive (YES - Gary Cooper) in Huntington Beach, CA who specialized in air cooled Porsches. While I was getting regular service from the Porsche dealership I bought the car; there were several times I had to take the car back two days later to get something diddled with. I decided to try Cooper Automotive and shortly thereafter decided I had fortunately met a real Porsche mechanic who did everything right, was reasonably priced and totally honest. It turns out that Gary was an aerospace engineer like myself, but greatly preferred working on cars and doing some racing over sitting at a desk! I stuck with and became good friends with Gary and his wife Loretta for the next 25 years until he died at age 68 from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). The Cooper's seem to think I always had some motivational influence on their young son, Gary Cooper Junior, because of all of my crazy inventions like my Guinness World record holding 155 MPG at freeway speeds California Commuter, Robosaurus - my patented fire-breathing, car-eating hydraulic monster transformer, etc. After high school, Gary Junior got into the Air Force Academy. He later flew 39 missions in the first Gulf War as a F-16 pilot. Gary is now a Colonel in the Air Force and runs the Air Force's F-35 flight test programs at Edwards Air Force Base. After Gary passed away I had horrible experiences with the next two supposed Porsche 914 specialists I tried. Incompetent, expensive SOB's. After much frustration I finally found a great, super sharp 914 mechanic by going to a Cars and Coffee Saturday meet in Irvine and asking all the 914 owners present who they used and recommended. Made an appointment & went to Craig. Been happy ever since mid-2009. The story goes on. You must keep in mind that the car is almost 41 years old and has accumulated 431,655 MILES! It looks great in these eBay pictures, but as my mechanic Craig states "It's a PERFECT 10 - - - FROM 10 feet away". If after looking at all my 914 pictures and you want to learn more about this car, please visit my personal engineering/invention website........(Oh OH - I thought I was all done with my eBay ad and just found out I am NOT allowed to include any links to my website - I have been censored by eBay!)Now what? If you want to read all the detailed PROS & CONS discussion that I wrote about my 914, just Google my name - Doug Malewicki - and you will find my invention website pretty quick. Go to my home page and click on the picture of my Porsche 914 at the top of the page. This will take you to my long list of PROS & CONS with many descriptive pictures. YES - I have lots to say about the car after all these years. Thanks. On Jun-14-13 at 22:59:37 PDT, seller added the following information: 1.7 liter engineOn Jun-15-13 at 13:55:56 PDT, seller added the following information: Nothing to do with the car, but I just found out from his Mom, Loretta, that Colonel Gary Cooper junior retired from the Air Force after 25 YEARS earlier this year. He is now having fun being a Scoutmaster and tooling around on his Harley - no more supersonic jets. His son Sean is already in high school! It is becomeing more than apparent that time whooshes by faster the older you get. Gary and wife Melissa are also having their 25th ANNIVERSARY this July 16th. Congratulations & quadruple YIKES! I really have become a geezer. On Jun-21-13 at 17:38:13 PDT, seller added the following information: Friday June 21st - 4 PM update: Wow! The bidding on eBay for my 40+ year old Porsche 914 with 431,655 miles has gotten interesting to say the least. Got some additional interest through a couple of blogs today: DailyTurismo and Jalopnik. Fun reads at: www.dailyturismo.com/2013/06/10k-most-interesting-man-in-world-1972.html and http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/the-most-interesting-man-in-the-world-is-selling-his-po-531679614 The auction still has 3 days to go too! Wonder what a Caddy or Lincoln from that same era would go for?
