Offered for Sale by the California Automobile Museum
The 1964 Volkswagen was custom built in 1981 by the former owner. It is currently in NON-OP status with the DMV. This vehicle was donated to the museum and is now being offered for sale AS IS.
Exterior
The exterior consists of a tube frame made out of 1.5 inch .095 wall tubing. The frame mounts to the stock bolt location of the original body. The front and rear tubing sections are removable for ease of working on the front suspension or the engine. The 20 Gallon fuel tank that is mounted just in front of the engine is out of an AMC Hornet. The spare tire fits on top of the fuel tank as well as a small wooden dolly that was used for engine removal.
Interior
The interior consists primarily of two bucket seats. The rear wooden bench is a lockable storage compartment. The dashboard was custom made and houses the instrument cluster in the center of the dash.
Mechanical
This VW starts up and runs decent. It has not run much in the past two years so it definitely needs a tune up. It stumbles slightly when you accelerate. I suspect the carburetor needs to be rebuilt. It does start right up and idles. The VW shifts through its gears nicely. The brakes work but they do need to be checked out before driving on any roads as the reservoir was empty and we added fluid but did not bleed the brakes. The steering gear does have a leak so that will have to be addressed as well. There is a spare carburetor as well as a spare steering gear box in the storage compartment behind the seat. There are other misc. parts and tools in the storage area as well. The tires will need to be replaced as they all have cracking in the sidewalls and all have a build date of "341" which was the 34th week of 1991. They do however still hold air. The electrical system was all done by the former owner and consists of a Blade style master switch hidden under the dash, a switch to turn the ignition on and a switch to engage the starter. The blue switches on the dash are left and right blinkers and the switches below operate the windshield wipers and the ignition. The odometer works as it should.
Overview
This vehicle was donated to the California Automobile Museum. It was in a VW exhibit for a short time and then was taken out and put into storage. We highly recommend that this vehicle be checked out before driving on public roads as it has sat for some time.
We know that this vehicle was custom built by its former owner and driven approximately 18,500 miles while he had it. He told us he had driven it to Denver from Southern California a couple of times.
This vehicle will be a great project for someone. With a little TLC this VW could make a nice summer car.
