History: The EMPI Imp was a fiberglass dune buggy manufactured by EMPI of Riverside,Ca. in the mid '60s through the early '70s. They represented EMPI's penetration into the highly lucrative dune buggy market popularized by Bruce Meyer's Manx. Many people today feel the Imp was one of the best engineered fiberglass buggies ever offered. The Imp was constructed of a fiberglass body and two piece hood/dash bolted to a shortened Volkswagen Beetle floor pan. The floorpan was shortened by 12” but otherwise everything else remained stock VW. This contrasted with the majority of dune buggies being manufactured at the time, as they all used a floor pan shortened 14" to 14.5". One popular misconception among buggy owners is that Imps only came with certain wheels, interiors, etc. or have to have a floorpan the same age as the body. These are all false. The Imp was available in many different kits, from the basic body to everything except the rolling floorpan. Sprint Star wheels are just as stock as a set of Cragar SSs or American truck wheels. It’s real common for someone to buy a new '70 Imp and use a floor pan from '67 or earlier. If you are looking to build a "period correct" Imp, you can use any part that predates the body. For example, it would be ok to use a '70 Imp with a '65 Porsche 356 engine or '66 Corvair engine. You could not use a 2.0L Type 4, as they didn't appear until 1972. Likewise with a '67 Imp, you could not use an IRS floorpan, as the IRS rear suspension/transaxle wasn't introduced until '68. The Imp is truly a "fun car" and it will provide hours of driving pleasure. Driving down the road is fun and the look of passersby and other drivers is great. But be prepared to answer questions, as people will inevitably be inquisitive about it. The following table is copied directly from a 1970 EMPI Imp assembly manual. Some values may or may not be correct for every Imp produced and built. Wheelbase: 82.5" Wheels: Builder's choice Track, Front: 51.6" Tires: Builder's choice Track, Rear 53.3" Steering: Stock VW worm & roller, overall ratio 15:1 Weight: 1290 lbs. Turns: 2.6 lock to lock Ground Clearance w/15" Tires: 9" Turning Circle: 32 feet Seating Capacity: 4 persons Front Suspension: Independent with trailing arms, torsion bars, tube shocks Body: Fiberglass, 2pcs. hood-dash pre-bonded Rear Suspension: Swingaxles with semi trailing arms, torsion bars, and tube shocks. Chassis: VW platform frame. Shortened 12" to accept EMPI Imp body Included with this table was the following paragraph of why the Imp was a better choice than other buggies. EMPI has conducted many tests to determine the optimum amount to cut from the VW frame when making a dune buggy and through our experience have settled on a 12" cut. This leaves the wheelbases at 82.5", an ideal ratio between wheel base and tread width. Not only does this make for the best ride and superb handling but also has extra benefits like adequate leg room for rear seat passengers and the frame is easier to cut and reweld instead of 14" or 14.5" as many others use. The transition in the frame when it is put back together is less severe at this point and the tunnel match is much better. The EMPI Imp rear seat area has built-in recessed grooves to reinforce the rear seating area and when used with the EMPI rear body support brackets, becomes fully load bearing, a feature not found in any other dune buggy.
