Vehicle Detail
1999 Mexican Production Air-Cooled VW Beetle 1600Fuel Injected 4 cyl 4 speed transmission with VW Factory Air Conditioning A very unique vehicle and one you won't see in your neighbor's driveway! VW de Mexico in Puebla, Mexico continued the 70 year long production of the original air-cooled Beetle Sedan all the way up to the 2004 model year, ending production with the special "Ultima Edicion" (Final Edition) of which only 3000 were made. Volkswagen in Wolfsburg, Germany had ceased production of the Model 111 Beetle Sedan in 1977 and only Brazil continued to produce VW Beetle Sedans for a few years after that. This left a great number of people in the US who desired to own a Beetle for personal use. Unfortunately Volkswagen had ceased any attempts to sell the old air-cooled Beetles in America with the end of the Super Beetle Convertible in 1979. The only completely legal way to own and register a Mexican production Beetle in the USA was to use an already US legal and completely re-furbished VW Beetle chassis and wholly retro-fit it with the brand new body, interior and engine from a Mexican produced Beetle. As Mexican Beetles are technically an older design the body mates to the US frames perfectly as if they were made as one unit. The limited number of cars that were assembled at that time luckily passed the government safety and EPA emissions inspections in place in 2000. There were a few companies that made a business out of what was then referred to as "restoring" older beetles with complete Mexican bodies, interiors and drive trains. This Beetle was one of about 10 done by a well-known company in the Mid-West back in 2000. This practice was short lived and the loophole in the US Department of Transportation’s Crash and Safety Laws that were in force at that time have since changed. This window of opportunity no longer exists as safety and emission laws have made it impossible for newer conversions to be titled and registered legally in the US. This The Mexican Beetles are truly … the end of the line! As can be noted by the original VW speedometer that still measures in kilometers that has had a sticker showing ‘MPH’ placed over the original Mexican ‘KPH’, my '99 has only 3200 original kilometers (2100 miles) and it runs like a brand new Swiss watch! The speedometer measures a top speed of 160, so it's easy to see it's not 'MPH'!This Beetle is also a fairly rare color even in Mexico, it is ‘Desert Wind Metallico’. In the right natural light, the color appears to 'flip-flop' from bright silver to very pale golden metallic. It is a very very sharp looking car and my pictures do no justice. It's neat to see what functional and cosmetic changes were made to the production Beetles as these cars were still being produced in Mexico after 70 years. Note the lack of chrome trim on the hood and chrome side moldings. The mirrors at this time were no longer chrome but finished in flat black. There is no crescent vent behind the rear window as there had been on older cars made in Germany. The body colored painted headlight rings and color matched bumpers (with integrated turn signals) give the car away as a Mexican production car, not to mention a more updated modern seats and interior fabrics not seen in the old cars.Did I mention the ice-cold original VW factory air conditioning? ... never seen in the older Beetles! In keeping with modern conveniences seen on most cars in 1999 and to go one step further, the last years of Beetles manufactured in Mexico came equipped with a factory installed anti-theft alarm system as can be seen in the photo of the key activation switch on the left front quarter panel. This flawless Beetle has a clear Ohio Title and an Ohio EPA certification documents for it’s 1600cc fuel injected engine with 4 speed swing axle transmission. Car also has the factory installed 3-way catalytic converter, and single outlet exhaust that allows it to meet the most stringent Ohio EPA emissions testing.
