Vehicle Detail

1991 VW Vanagon GL for sale. Clear title in-hand. Burgundy with grey trim and interior. 2-owners. No road/vehicular accidents. 4-speed manual transmission. Runs great. Odometer says 277k+ but previous owner had engine replaced at 111k in 1998, which means there is approximately 166k on this engine. Looks sharp and has been well-maintained (I have all maintenance records since 10/94). Needs some aesthetic TLC and could use some additional preventative basic engine work but still drives great, looks sharp and gets all the looks. Own an icon that spreads joy wherever you drive it! Van is in central North Carolina and I am willing to deliver anywhere in the continental USA. I am confident it’ll make it to you and I’d love to pass it on after one final road trip. I charge $.20 (that’s twenty cents) per mile east of the Mississippi River and $.25 per mile to all points west of the Mississippi. Otherwise you can come pick it up here for free. I want to do this transaction in-person with the actual buyer so please do not plan for a third party to pick it up for you. INSIDE: Interior rug desperately needs cleaning (or better yet, replacing). No middle seat but hardware on floor is ready for one. Passenger's side door panel missing and electric window does not function (currently a dowel serves to hold the window up). Driver's side door panel intact, but electric window button is popped yet still works most of the time. It has a tendency to stick though. RPM side dash lights work intermittently, the rest of the dash does not illuminate. Radio works, cassette deck will eat your tape. Digital clock works but cannot be changed (currently reads EST). Fan will blow air but only when you choose the "full blast" option. A/C doesn't work, heater warms slowly but effectively. Dash is in good condition, no sun damage. Electric locks will work, but only from the inside when depressing passenger side. Front speakers non-operational, rear Pioneer speakers work but not loud. Sort of silly to lock it anyhow - it's pretty easy to break into. Far back seat is sharp. Back trunk area is good too. Seats roll into a bed nicely. Roof liner ceiling is clean and without tears. Battery under passenger seat replaced 5/2011. Sometimes the cabin smells of coolant (and similar to maple syrup) - there's a minor coolant leak sometimes I notice dampness under the back seat. I am told that this isn't a big deal but my guess is that someday it might be. Storage area under the back seat is fine. Middle seatbelt on back seat is broken. No lug wrench or jack. Sorry... OUTSIDE: No rust! Minor scratches, dings and weathering throughout (see photos). Overall paint still looks ok with expected age-caused wear mainly on nose and driver’s side door. Two ancient, tiny chips in windshield but no spider-webbing. Working wipers (front and back), functional turn signals and interior lights (including the sun visor light above passenger seat...wow!). Right front turn signal casing is cracked. Tires are fine, all hubcaps present. Full sized spare. Minor wear dents on rear corners as depicted in photos. Bumper sides have also been bumped, but no major damage. Sliding door works well. Antenna present. Locking gas cap. Back hatch works but uses a broomstick (included) to keep it up (you can get two new hatch struts for $25). Hatch is also missing the locking hardware but can still be opened from the outside. Sliding door panel trimming flaps a bit but is still well-affixed. Top of van is oxidizing and not worth trying to wax as the paint is all but gone. ENGINE: 2.1 liter water cooled horizontally opposed engine. Full tune up 5/11 by Transporter Werks in Raleigh, NC. They made a laundry list of things that "could" be done eventually - not gonna lie, it's a scary list. On the lift we found no rust (or, very little to speak of anyhow). Brakes are fine (rear brakes replaced 80k ago). Minor oil leaking in the engine per usual with Vanagons - leaves an oil and coolant drip mark on the street when parked after driving. Power steering seems to leak a little too. Engine pressure is fine. Coolant usually leaks more when it's cold outside. New clutch in ’09. Replaced front axle in September '12. I was told it's in solid shape and have had a blast with it for 2 years, during which time I've driven it a lot: To Asheville 5x, Virginia x1, Outer Banks x1, and RDU like 30x. Plus it gets a daily workout around town. Goes about 220 miles before needing a fill up, I have to add oil occasionally and coolant regularly. Hate to let it go, but choosing to be a full time bike commuter. Thanks for looking. I have more pics if you want to see anything specific. Hoping to sell this to a Vanagon enthusiast who has the time, energy and money to keep it alive indefinitely. It’s been loved on a lot and I hope the next owner will keep this up.
