Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This rare 1936 Chevrolet Master Coach with outside spare tire and wire wheels has been garaged in Southern California since I bought it in Hollywood 41 years ago. It’s a dream machine, I feel like Humphrey Bogart when I’m driving it, only taller. Out of a production run of 931,102 for Chevrolet in 1936, only 40,814 were the Master Coach. 1936 was the first year for the all steel ‘Turret Top’ instead of fabric, for hydraulic brakes, and for front-hinged doors. In 1936 Chevrolet overtook Ford in sales. A body-off restoration was completed 10 years ago, frame and body were blasted, new wood was installed wherever needed. Motor compression was good, so we did a valve job and resurfaced the head, replaced the starter, generator, water pump, fuel pump, and carburetor with rebuilts; NOS radiator and grille, brake cylinders and clutch; resurfaced the flywheel, new synchros and some new gears and bearings in transmission, knee action shocks were rebuilt by Five Points, new glass and window channels, new wood graining on the window moldings, all new rubber, new headliner, Hampton Coach mohair interior, original heater was recored, vacuum wipers by wiperman.com, recast steering wheel, all gauges were rebuilt and are operable. It has new aluminum doors sills, glove box, dash knobs, re-bushed pedal pivot to eliminate slop, re-built steering gear (Chevs of the 40s) to tighten steering, new but yet-to-be-installed rear window shade, new wiring harness, the same key operates the ignition and working door locks, that the car is 6 volt without sealed beam headlights and the starter has the original engagement method of pushing down on the accelerator pedal. Oh, and the rear seat back folds down to allow for luggage storage behind. My direct restoration costs were over $30,000.00, not including my own countless of hours of labor. This car has been driven less than 500 miles since the restoration was completed; parades, car shows and such, but I have moved on to other interests. This year I again rebuilt the brake cylinders and fuel pump. The brakes work great, can be locked up, no pulling left or right. This car is as authentic and original as you can get, the only concession to modernity is turn signals, the switch for which is discreetly hidden. It is painted Hollywood Tan, the correct color per the body tag. It has the optional right side taillight. Included is a plush car cover, many spare parts, a correct Chevrolet unrestored tube radio with speaker and an unrestored locking hubcap for the rear spare (very rare); all three of the original repair manuals - the 1935 Mechanical, 1936 Supplement, and the 1935/1936 Fisher Body (not reprints); original sales brochures and magazine ads, even the dealer filmstrip. So, what's wrong with this car? I never got around to doing the pin striping on the belt molding or the wheels; there is no weatherstripping on the doors, so not a good idea to drive it in the rain, the teeth on some of the window cranks are worn, so you need to push in while cranking the windows up. All of the 35 - 36 two-door sedans I have seen have some degree of door droop due to the physics involved and hinge pin wear. At its worst point (rear edge) the passenger door is down 1/8 - 1/4, and the drivers' door 1/4 - 3/8. This disappears when the doors are closed, the dovetail bumper and wedgeplate align them correctly. We replaced both door pillars, and some of the wood in the doors, it's been so long I've forgotten exactly which pieces. But everything we left in place was solid. I couldn't find the fender brace/splashguards the are meant to keep mud and rain from being thrown from the rear tires onto the tail lights, (but I have a bad original to copy from) and there are minor paint dings. Please note my eBay feedback score, 2,562 positives over ten years, with not a single negative. This car was sold on eBay previously in December 2012, but the buyer did not perform. Please do not bid unless you intend to buy the car. I reserve the right to cancel bids from 0 feedback bidders or anyone else I have reason to believe is not serious. This car can be seen in person in La Canada, California. I can be reached by telephone at (818) 952-3038 or evenings and weekends at (818) 326-1111, ask for Gary. Buyer must take possession of the car in La Canada, or arrange for Buyer’s preferred transport. Deposit of $500.00 within 48 hours of auction close. Full payment required within 7 days. Rust, Rot, Body filler - There was very little rust on the car when I got it in 1972, there was some surface rust over much of the body but no cancer, except for a small place in the passenger foot well, which we fiberglassed in so as to follow the grooves in the floor. Very difficult to see. There was some pitting on the frame also. We used virtually no body filler on the body, doors, hood, and radiator shell from what I remember. But the fenders and running boards were rough; dents and holes and tears. I spent years finding good fenders and boards, and ended up with solid sheet metal, some NOS. But there is bondo here and there on some of the fenders. Oh, and the back half of the spare time cover was combined from two, it's virtually impossible to find one that has not been hit on the bottom. Pictures of interior or upholstery flaws - There are no flaws on the interior, it is perfect ! Pictures of paint flaws - I cannot attach new images to the listing, but I will email to anyone images of the worst three spots on the paint: a 3" area on the right front fender where there is some checking going on, a 1" spot under the pass. door where a rock or something must have hit from the underside, and a 1/2" chip next to the rear window. I must say, apart from those problems, the paint is quite good. Running Board Mats - They are new reproduction, perfect, beautiful, no cracks or checking.
