A: because he did! an Italian businessman in the Los Angeles area -- successful enough in his present field to own a home in Beverly Hills and another near Palm Springs which houses 4 similar cars as the one we’re presently listing, wants to fulfill a lifelong dream while the fulfilling is still within his grasp – tell his present boss arrivederci and become his own boss and head chef in the Italian restaurant that will bear his name somewhere in the Hollywood Hills according to Lorenzo, much of what it takes to realize this dream is already in place, leaving a portion of the financing as the only major obstacle that prevents it from becoming his daily reality soooooooooooooooooooooo, first of at least three of Lorenzo’s five cars to be sold by this seller here on Ebay is perhaps his most personally pampered, shortest time owned (at 11 years) and fewest miles driven: his full size luxury car 4our-door sedan 1972 Mercedes-Benz W116 280 SEL with 4.5 M117 V-8 engine, one of only 8,173 manufactured by Mercedes-Benz 1970-1972 on a tip from an owner of a Mercedes repair shop near Palm Springs, Lorenzo bought the car c. 2000 from a family who had left it in their garage for 17 years after the demise of the owner; logic has it that approximately 100,000 miles were put on the car 1972-1983 ( a little less than 10,000 miles/year) before its long nap 1983-2000 all told, no less than $35,000 has been invested in the purchase and restoration of this Mercedes, the overwhelming majority of the latter being restricted to authentic Mercedes parts, noting the only exception this seller is aware of being the change of the original all-burgundy exterior which now features a very distinctive and rich ivory roof and burgundy body which is carried further to the interior – ivory white seats and interior roof with burgundy to the dash (with wood) and floor; white steering wheel was ordered from Germany and then there's the dash! the beautiful burgundy dash was also redone -- then covered up by atrocious looking fabric and glued down in a few areas by an idiot who no longer is allowed within 200 yards of a repair shop in the contiguous 48 states; the cover has been removed, the few glued areas restored and the wood panel between the dash and the windshield is currently being restored to match the wood framing the gauges (so now, if asked again 'how could he...'? answer is 'he didn't!') most or all other repairs or restoration, including engine, front end, electrical, brakes, tires, wheels, air conditioning, etc. have been made using Mercedes parts, and always with Lorenzo and/or his girlfriend sitting close by and with a direct view of the work being done, this to make sure Mr. Hanky and Mr. Panky are no-shows; one expert of vintage Mercedes-Benz vehicles has observed that the mechanical and cosmetic improvements Lorenzo has had done on this car could have easily cost him perhaps 1/3-1/2 less had he gone the more pedestrian cheaper, quicker, easier route rather than the more expensive quality one persistently taken by Lorenzo known flaws 1. piece of wood missing above passenger front window 2.
