Vehicle Detail

1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S coupe that has been hidden in a garage for the last eight years. This car was originally sold new at the now defunct Mercedes-Benz on Hollywood, CA in 1958 to a Mr. Charles A. Mottl, who appears to either have been a radio personality or investment banker according to the internet. I purchased it from the son of it's long time (possibly second, but I cannot verify) owner. It has lived on the west coast and in the southwest for most of it's life. The odometer reads 89,967 miles, but true mileage is unknown. After removing the car from a garage where it sat for eight years, I had the fuel drained, the oil changed, installed a new Mercedes-Benz battery and had the carburetors cleaned and resealed. It starts and runs with the choke on, but obviously will need tuning and restoration. The brakes stop the car adequately and the four speed manual transmission shifts without drama. The car was originally fitted with the Hydrak clutchless transmission that was a large disappointment for Mercedes-Benz, but was converted to a traditional four speed manual with floor shift at some point. Apparently the Hydrak transmissions were problematic and very expensive to repair, so the previous owner simplified the transmission situation. The body needs restoration, the paint is peeling and cracking, and there is surface rust where paint has chipped away. I cannot find any place on the body where rust has gone beyond the surface. One of the previous owners had undercoating applied at some point and it did a marvelous job of protecting the body. The four original wheel covers are still with the car, the spare wheel and tire are still in the trunk. The wood dash panel needs refinishing, but the wood is solid. The wood trim on the doors will need more work. The rubber seals around the door need to be replaced, the e original red leather seats need recovering. The original Becker AM/FM radio still works. I have a few aditional photos that I can email on request. Mercedes-Benz made only 1,251 220s coupes from 1956-1959, making them the rarest of the Ponton models. It's 2195cc 6 cylinder engine produced 105 hp using two down draft Solex carburetors. This was a significant model for Mercedes-Benz in that it was a personal luxury coupe with style that could reach near 100 mph. It was a departure from the stoic business class sedans that the company was known for at the time. These coupes are rarely offered for sale these days, and the last few that I have seen here on eBay have been in far worse condition and either not running or missing parts. This is a great example of a car that will restore well and is not missing any parts as far as I can tell.
