Double click on the arrow below to go to full screen. 1929 Hudson 4-door Custom LandauBody by Biddle & Smart The 1929 Hudson that you see before you is a classic car of the roaring twenties is very elegant and a great tour car. For those of you that are not aware of it, Hudson and other auto manufacturers like Duesenberg, Cadillac, Chrysler and Lincoln would get special orders for their chassis which included the fenders and the hood but no body. The car buyer would then have the chassis shipped to a special body builder and the body builder would make a special deluxe custom body. The car that you see before you is not only the Super Six, super fast Hudson it is also the car that has a Biddle & Smart short coupled Landau body. There were only 31 of these bodies built and only five remain today. The word short coupled means that the back end of the car is not extended beyond the rear axle which would make some other car look pregnant but with this car the back end of the body drops almost right over the center of the rear axle which always gives a racey look and plus there are no quarter windows and instead has a full padded top with Landau iron. Four-door sedans don’t get much better looking then a short coupled Landau style body. In reference to the engine the Super Six was legendary and pulled harder and faster then most eights of the day. It would take a Duesenberg to outrun a Hudson. Hudson’s have always been sought after by collectors but a Hudson with the custom body is really rare and is sought after by the elite collectors who have large collections of only the best cars. The car that you see before you needs some tender, loving care but is also in very good, solid and original condition. The odometer reads 59,900 miles and it is believed to be original. This is not one of the cars that has made the rounds of various live auctions but has been in the same town for forty years! Hudson Super Sixes, were known for very rapid acceleration due to the F-Head design, this means that intake valve is in the block and the exhaust valve is in the manifold. This makes for a very efficient setup for supplying the motor with fuel and exhausting the burnt gas. Biddle & Smart Company; 1882-1930; Amesbury, Massachusetts Biddle & Smart fell into the category of medium-sized firms supplying custom bodies for small and medium sized automobile manufacturers. The Biddle & Smart Company of Amesbury was a successful carriage manufacturer that made the transition into automobile body production. This car is located in the western part of the Midwest and the owner has owned it for a number of decades and is now getting older and would like to see the car get into the hands of somebody who will appreciate it and keep it good running condition knowing that the car can be kept as is as a ‘survivor’ or restored for show purposes.
