MERCEDES BENZ 280SE 3.5 #3554 of 12000 made VERY RARE! $10,000 of 1971 dollars would be worth: $56,497.18 in 2012 I really hate to sell my baby but the time has come. I have to downsize because we are moving and do not have adequate space any longer. The car is essentially rust free a you can tell from the pictures. All the door truck seals are crack free and very flexible(not dry rotted). It does appear the interior was redone before I bought the car and they did a o.k. job. It could definately use and upgrade or detail. This car will throw you sideways going into second gear and will chirp the tires in third. The amazing thing is in 1971 they had bosch electronic fuel injection, 4 wheel disk brakes (I will supply a replacement master cylinder) I have not had time to replace as the brakes do fade and I am almost positive the master cylinder has a bad seal. The only thing is I have taken off the front part of the motor (i.e. water pump, distributor, valve covers, some pulleys etc) to replace the timing chains. They did not break nor skip but the driver side chain had a slight chatter (see picture of valve cover) The picture shows a little wear on the inside of the valve cover where the chain was chattering. I wanted to replace the chains and guides before any damage occured but I just dont have the time or place to do it any longer. So the parts are in the trunk waiting for the right buyer to put my girl back on the road. You will have to trailer the car. Oh speaking of the trunk the only rust I have seen on the car is in the typical place under the spare tire well.. easily fixed and dosent pose any structure issue at all. The motor is very desirable as it is the same motor in the cabriolet. My loss your Gain! 108 History The new engines arrived in late 1969, and the first was the 3499 cc M116 V8 with Bosch electronic fuel injection, producing 200 h.p, was fitted to the W109, and shown on the Frankfurt Auto Show. The car was christened as the 300SEL 3.5. Its performance included a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph) and 0–100 km/h in 10 seconds. During summer of 1970, the M116 was added to the W108 lineup on both regular and LWB, the 280SE 3.5 and the 280SEL 3.5 respectively. The next year saw further retirements of the Pontons, the 2-door W111s and the W113 pagoda roadsters were phased out of production. This left the W108 and W109 as the sole survivors of the ageing family. However the arrival of the big-block 4520 cc 225 hp (168 kW) M117 engine allowed for a final set of vehicles to be launched in the spring of 1971, the W108 280SE 4.5 and 280SEL 4.5 and the W109 300SEL 4.5. This, was destined solely for the US market. Performance improved, top speed - 205 km/h, 0-100 - 9.5 seconds. However as the mainstream V8 models were being introduced, production was already drawing to a close, the straight-six 300SEL was finished in January 1970, and in April 1971 the 280SEL followed. The 280SE 3.5 and 280SEL W108s were retired in summer of 1972. In September the last 300SEL 3.5 and the 6.3 rolled off the conveyors. A month later, the final 300SEL 4.5 ended the W109's output, and in November saw the final models of the W108 280SE and 280SEL 4.5s end a seven-year history.
