Vehicle Detail
1973 was the only model year that VW produced the "sports bug" and this one needs a new driveway or garage to call home. What you see in the photos is what you get - a classic beetle that is six months shy of 40 years old and really should be restored. However I don't have the facilities, the time, or the inclination to dive into such a project. While in our possession, the car was driven from Ontario, California to Gresham, Oregon (approximately 1,000 miles) without any difficulty. Even going over the grapevine, the mountains near Mt. Shasta, and the Siskiyous posed no problem. All that was needed was to drop it into 3rd gear on the steeper inclines. An electronic fuel pump was installed prior to us owning it. In 2010 the former exhaust was replaced with a new California Quiet exhaust. All interior and exterior lighting works as well as the rear window defogger and front blower. So mechanically it is in pretty good shape. Current Oregon license tags valid until June 2014. But there are a few discrepancies that you may want to deal with: Though equipped with air conditioning, I don't know whether it still uses R-12 freon or if it has been retrofitted to use 134a. The compressor does turn on and off but it needs a recharge for the air to get cold, and for fear of putting in the wrong refrigerant I haven't attempted to recharge it. A local shop that deals only in Volkswagens was shocked that it even had AC. For reasons unknown, a previous owner removed the backseat and in its place put in a flat carpeted cargo area with a hatch underneath that accesses the car's battery. A previous owner removed the leather sports bug steering wheel and replaced it with a standard beetle steering wheel from that vintage. The dash is badly cracked and deteriorated, but it is covered with a custom fit dash cover. So unless someone is purposely poking around looking for defects it is not easily noticeable. The passenger side sun visor has been broken off, but it has been saved. There are paint chips and scattered small rust spots. Remember it is nearly 40 years old. But the sports bug striping (black matte and red stripe) is in tact. Probably the worst defects are the headliner and the inside of the doors where some idiot ripped out old speakers. As you can see in the photos, the headliner needs to be completely replaced. I don't know how much it would cost to have a professional put a new one put in, but if you do a web search you will find do-it-yourself beetle headliner kits available for $50.00 and up. When the auction is over we can drive the car to a public location within 100 miles of the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area for an extra $50.00. Otherwise it is the auction winner's (buyer) responsibility to either come pick it up (we are about 10 miles from Portland Int'l Airport and could meet you there) or to arrange transport at their expense. I have attempted to attach scans of the receipts for work done by Trafton's Foreign Auto in Portland, but for some reason I can't get ebay to upload them. At mileage 221,852 the following work was done: Cap, rotor, fuel filter, points, spark plugs, oil kit, valve cover gaskets, four feet of vacuum hose, accelorator pump, diaphragm, carb gasket, turn signal switch, horn switch, muffler, seals, rear brakes, fly well seal, adjust front brakes, replace windshield and rear window seals, tune up, and oil change. Parts and labor totalled $1402.45. So mechanically it is in pretty good shape. Current Oregon license tags valid until June 2014.
