Vehicle Detail
My 1974 Alfa GTV. Regrettably, I'd like to sell this car to make room in the garage for a new british arrival. This is not a concourse car, but a very nice, mostly original, non-abused example, a very nice driver or great candidate for full-on restoration. The speedo shows 52k miles, and while I always throw that out the window, I suspect it may be true: seats and carpeting appear original and are in very good shape. There's wear but not much on the pedal rubbers, and the car still has its original dampers. In general, it seems to have been used gently; you can magnet the car and not see any signs of filler. Surely there must be some there, but I cannot find it. The rockers/sills are in very good shape, and the break line at the leading edge of the rockers is still there, which makes me think the rockers were never done, or at least done correctly. The door gaps are quite good, making me think the car was never taken apart. The car starts easily (manual choke w/ spica injection) and runs and idles smoothly right from the beginning. Gearshifts are quite and smooth as long as you're reasonably patient, with no odd noises to speak of, and no smoking out the tailpipe. Brakes are terrific and general handling is good. The car goes very straight down the road with no wheel vibration at all. This car is very reliable, steady and solid, makes great noises and does all the right things that GTVs are so famous for doing well. It also gets more street-attention than any other of my vintage cars. All gauges work, as do high beam, low beam and fog lights, directions, backup lights. The original radio works, although it has a bit of a crackle when you turn the volume (contact cleaner would help, I imagine.) Fan blower works, but for some reason I only have slow-speed wipers. Maybe a lose connector. Headliner is snug, but looks to be original, so somewhat tired, with a very small 1" tear by the speaker shelf. The seats and carpeting look to be original and are in very nice shape, with no abrasions on the seats and normal wear on the carpeting. There is a single split in the crash-pad, but otherwise the dash is in nice shape and appears to be original. The hand-brake shroud should be replace. The sore spot in the car is definitely the 2 interior door panels, which are tired, warped and should be replaced. There is no matt or carpeting in the trunk compartment. The condition of the paint is fairly good for old paint, with a few small nicks and imperfections here and there. There doesn't appear to be any rust popping through. There is some crappy repair work to the outer edge of the driver's wheel well (see photo). From the underside of the car, the passenger side jack point shows some rusting. The rear overriders are missing. The trunk and spare tire compartment is very clean and rust-free. Some recent maintenance include replacement of the fan/shroud, motor mounts, clutch slave and hose, battery, 4 springs (IAP red springs, so the car sits like the earlier ones), new trailing arms/bushings and trunion washers. Valve clearances were checked and all within spec. Also 4 brand new tires, original spec. Other small things to keep the car in shape that are not worth mentioning. Testing the motor shows good vitals. I did a compression test on a hot motor with WOT and got 180/180/182/184. Oil pressure shows 60 lbs at cruising rpms and about 30lbs warmed up at idle. Temp gauge never seems to get close to the half-way point. If I were to keep the car, I'd replace the interior door panels and replace the dampers. I'd probably replace that handbrake cover, recap the dash pad and replace the rear overriders and install mats in the trunk. I'm no expert on Alfas (this is my first), so you're not talking to someone who knows Alfas comparatively, but I own/have owned about 15 vintage cars. The car has a clear NY title and is sold as-is. My reserve is very reasonable, i.e., this is not a pie-in-the-sky car for me: my reserve is probably 3-5k under similar GTVs I've seen, and certainly priced to sell. Inspect this car BEFORE you bid as your winning bid is a commitment, not an option to buy. Don't bid on this car unless you have cash in hand and are ready to pay for it within a few days. I would like a $1k paypal deposit and the balance as a bank check/cash. I'm willing to sell to an overseas buyer, but consider that I'm not arranging shipping, just facilitating it's departure. Thanks for looking. On Jun-12-12 at 12:01:04 PDT, seller added the following information: Update: Several folks have asked about A/C. I have recently removed all the plumbing and condenser and will make all the parts available to the buyer. Thanks.
