Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE I'm re-listing this car. The description below is updated to reflect answers to recent questions, The reserve price has been lowered to $18,000, If you wish to speak with me in person about this car, send an email message with your contact information. I am happy to assist serious buyers in any way I can. Built in Brazil in 1982. Titled in the USA as a 1983. Car history This a very nice original 30 year old car. It is a very rare, high quality, factory built in Brazil, Porsche endorsed, fiberglass 356 C coupe replica. About 200 coupes were built between 1979 and 1983. Most were sold through Porsche dealerships in Europe and South America. They were expensive. About 60 of these cars are known to exist today. I bought this one in the Chicago area in 2009. It was owned by the original USA purchaser, who now owned it for a second time, having bought it from an east coast seller. While on the east coast, the car had been neglected. Shrinking original windshield rubber seals had allowed water the leak into the interior. The car sat in a high temperature/ high humidity environment, which spoiled the headliner and the leather interior. Recent Work The previous owner went through the mechanicals, making the car a more reliable driver. In the past 2 years I’ve focused on the interior. A new Interiors International headliner has been installed. It is perfect. All the original leather panels were removed and reconditioned using Leathertique products. Once the leather was supple, it was re-dyed the original blue. The leather dash cover and the rear panel were replaced. Overall the leather interior now looks very good. The driver’s seat has splits. It comes with a sheepskin cover which hides the split seams. This is the most serious defect on the car. The seat tracks are freshly cleaned and work perfectly. The seat back hardware has also been cleaned and works as new. The chrome is good. The bad windshield rubber seals were replaced with Porsche one piece seals from International Mercantile. The new rear windshield seal fit perfectly the first time. Replacing the front seal was a challenge, due to slight differences between the original Envemo rubber and the new Porsche rubber. The interior glass grove had to be deepened to get a good fit. It took several tries to get it right. A new Pilkington Classics windshield was installed at the same time. The original Envemo windshield had been replaced with a cheap repo which had scratches and chips. The original door and quarter window seal are in decent condition for their age, but could use an update if suitable replacements can be found. These seals are slightly different than 356 Porsche, however, Porsche seals could probably be made to work. The original Envemo cut pile carpet was in bad shape. It has been replaced with a dark blue cut pile carpet which matches the leather color nicely. The interior of the pan had been cleaned and coated with a preservative by the previous owner. I added a layer of Dynamat Extreme sound proofing to the pan and tunnel. The pan is in excellent shape, inside and out. The interior now gives the impression of a well maintained original car. Exterior I find no evidence that the car has ever been in an accident. The pesky self-supporting 356 hood hinges have been repaired once and are working fine. Paint on the underside of the hood has damage in the repaired hinge area. Door handles, locks, latches, cranks are complete and working well. Hood and deck lid cables are complete and working. The original gas filler cap latch was broken and has been replaced with a push-pop magnetic catch from Hagan. Most of the Envemo coupes have a Carrera 2 style bottom spoiler at the rear. This car does not have one. It appears to have been taken off by a previous owner. It looks better without it, in my opinion. The tires are nearly new. The chrome rims have some imperfections. Some of the chrome hubcaps have road rash imperfections. Some surface rust on the wing window chrome. All exterior trim pieces are present and in good to excellent condition. The car has had one thin repaint in the original color. It has polishes up well. There are imperfections. The original base paint has small checks and cracks in the hood. Some thin spots in the roof paint, some small road rash. Some surface rust on the wing window frames. No dents or rust, of course. All in all, the car give the impression of a well cared for survivor. I would not repaint the car unless it was a part of a total restoration effort. I like the patina very much. Mechanicals Little has been done to the mechanicals since I bought the car. The brakes work well. The steering is tight. The transaxle shifts well, feels normal. Clutch feels normal. The engine starts instantly, thanks in part to an electric fuel pump and recent dual 34mm Solex’s with electric chokes. Some suspension squeaks at slow speed. I replaced a BugPak extractor muffler with a ceramic coated TrilMil muffler, which fits the car much better.1600 dualport engine. Recent dual Solex carbs w/ electric chokes. Points style ignition. disc front, drum rear brakes. 4 speed swing axle trans. five lug wheels w/ Kuhmo tires. VW heater boxes. Locking steering column w/ integral VW ignition switch. All mechanical parts and hardware are late VW Type 1 Electrical The battery is new. The original wiring harness is in good shape and largely unmolested. Turn signals, lights wipers etc all in good working order. The horn button has been moved to the dash. A Becker Europa mono radio was installed at some point. It works. The install was somewhat messy underneath but looks OK from the front. Title information. The current title is from the State of Alaska. Because it was built on a VW Brasilia chassis, the State of Alaska calls it a reconstructed vehicle. The VW Brazil chassis number was removed at the Envemo factory, There are two identification badges on the car, One is the original Envemo build badge identifying this as car #0119. A second VIN number badge was applied by the State of Virginia. This number appears on the AK title. Because of the unusual nature of this car, the State of Alaska had the VIN number checked by the FBI in Washington DC, before the new title was issued. The title is clear. All paperwork is in order and current. What the car needs · The dome light is not hooked up. I have a new one and new door switches, which are not installed yet. · The light switch on the emergency brake handle is missing? Mystery wire seems to go to the handbrake area. · The electrical contacts for the heated rear windshield have come loose. I have one for a sample. They need to be re-attached. · The trunk carpet set is missing. · No spare tire · The battery cover / hold down strap / clamp is missing. · The VDO dash clock makes ticking sounds but the hands don’t seem to move. · There is a slight imperfection in one of the tail lights due to a hot bulb. · Needs new heater cables soon. ok for now. · Original sun visors have a small crack at the seam · Nothing major. Fussy, fun little weekend projects Closing Thoughts This is an un-restored survivor, made to be driven. A rust free, drive in any weather car. The patina is great. It’s rare and very well made. I doubt you can find a better un-restored Envemo. I was looking for a 912 when I came across this car. I loved it at first sight and bought it on impulse, having owned and restored several 356’s in my younger days. My problem is that I’m quite tall, a little heavier than I once was, a lot older, and a lot stiffer. I’m having a hard time fitting into the car. I put the car on eBay last winter. It sold the first day to a good man from France. After several weeks of bureaucratic wrangling between the French DMV and the Alaska DMV, over what year it was and what kind of documentation would be required, we eventually gave up on the sale. If you are from France, please don’t bid without contacting me first. I’ve done my best to accurately describe this car. This is not a show car. It is an excellent survivor / driver. This car should go to someone who understands its special history and character. More information at envemo.com . On Jun-03-12 at 18:41:47 PDT, seller added the following information: Correction The odometer reads 78,800 not 88,000 as listed above. I believe this is accurate. Response to questions: The pan condition is excellent. Absolutely no holes of any kind in the pan. The pedal area is solid and clean. The electric fuel pump is new. The fan shroud is the round top style, like the 356. It is not the wide square top style common to some Brazilian VW engines.
