This is a never before known or offered 1937 Studebaker J 5 Coupe Express Pickup. Perhaps the Holy Grail of pickup trucks. This first year of J 5 pickups seldom ever come to market. In Cardinal Red, one of the original colors offered. Restored over 20 years ago. The L-head six cylinder flathead engine was also rebuilt and odometer now reads 730.1 miles. Has the original 3-speed manual transmission. It was running and road-driven when put into 20 year farm storage. Brought out this January of 2012. Beautiful body and paint. Still looks exceptional, so superb candidate to re-restore to high standards. The engine and components are 100% complete as original and engine turns free. Fresh from storage, nothing has been tampered, changed or fiddled with. Undercarriage and engine have some surface rust from storage. Matching whitewall tires in excellent condition and show no cracking or wear. Body has no rust. Original two-stage springs front and rear. Floor is solid with no rust-through areas. Pickup bed is also solid with the double-wall construction, including double-walled original tailgate. The paint remains in good condition with no cracking or runs. If lead or filler was used, it was very little, as paint shows no sign of problems after 20+ years. Don't see or feel any fender welds, etc. All body parts are exceptionally smooth, tight, and well-fitted. This truck is factory straight and sets perfect. Wiring appears replaced to match original, but has aged. There are a few small nicks in paint from storage. All window glass is excellent, including window vent wings and rubber. The replated chrome bumpers are good, with few blemishes. Grill is nice, complete, and straight, with some small road dings. The hood ornament and windshield wipers have some pitting. One windshield wiper extension arm is missing. Interior seat is in good condition, as is dome light and rim, too. Dash instruments also appear serviceable. Speedometer gauge is faded. Temperature gage has rust stain. No radio but factory holes for such in dash, and factory speaker holder above windshield. Studebaker speaker face-grill included, as well as original dash-plate to cover radio knob holes. Excellent brake and clutch rubber covers on petals, but original rubber gas petal has cracking. Rubber for gas-cap collar on rear right fender is needed. New door panels were with truck, but not installed. Needs floor-mat and headliner. Running- board rubber is serviceable but new rubber would be desired for award-winner. Seal-beam headlights can be put back original. Hubcaps are correct, but worn and pitted. Steering wheel and horn badge are in good shape and original. Has original J 5 vin plate, too. The few 1937 J 5 pickups that have come to auction, brought exceptionally strong prices, and the market on early pickups is soaring. This first year J 5 is slightly shorter and sportier than the 1938 or 1939 production, too. Probably why this year was picked to be made into die-cast toy, for which this looks a real-life twin to Danbury Mint casting. Was purchased to just wax up, have running again and drive, but convinced it was too rare and fine to hit these country roads. Inspection welcome. Located in Wilson, Kansas two miles off I-70.
