Vehicle Detail
1952 Studebaker V8 Commander convertible hardtop. This model is a most interesting part of Studebaker's history and quickly becoming one of this marques most sought after "Holy Grails". This Starliner was purchased by me from the grandson of the original owner in Modesto, CA. The car was garaged in 1980, last driven in 1979 and had not been running until this past week. She got a fresh oil change, cylinders lubed, new battery, plugs and points cleaned and regapped, several quarts of transmission fluid, newer hood cable and of course, a good cleaning. The body is in extremely sound condition. There is no rust out to be found, yes there is some scale here and there, but nothing like you might expect. The floors are immaculate as is the trunk floor. The body does have a "couple" of dings and a slight crease on the right rear fender. Paint has a shine, but it is old and deserves better. Chrome and Stainless are very good to poor depending on which pieces your looking at, however it is all there and missing nothing (the grill teeth and cross bars are extra nice). The interior is complete, very original and missing nothing. I removed the carpets as they were tatty, but still preserved them should the new owner wish to have them. Front seats are tatty as well and need recovering though a very nice seat cover comes with. Rear sear is intact, a bit soiled, but in good condition. The all vinyl door panels and rear quarter interior panels are in amazingly good condition as is the original vinyl headliner. The steering wheel is rich in color and devoid of cracks - just a super nice piece. The gauge faces have a very fresh look to them. All numbers are intact, and yes they do glow nicely in the dark. This Studebaker runs well and yard drives...no brakes. However the parking brake does work. The Automatic Drive shifts as it should and the parking pawl keeps her in Park! The tires are fair but obviously the wrong size and type. I would classify them as excellent rim protectors. Only one original wheel cover, yet the other two caps go with the car. All green tinted glass is very nice with no cracks. Windows do go up and down, passenger side is a bit sticky. Passenger door is also a bit sticky to latch do to a worn rotary latch, but I have a NOS replacement that goes with the car. I know you would be more than satisfied with the condition of this car. There are some leaks here and there, yet nothing major. With complete brake work (has anti creep) and some good looking after you could drive it this spring or a full restoration which is really what this survivor deserves. CA title is clear and undated. I'm sure you will have questions so please feel free to call before 10PM EST. 828-817-5302. If I don't answer, leave a message and I will return your call.
