Vehicle Detail
First, it is ugly! It has original paint. Being an AZ car it has minimal rust although it does have a few spots that need attention and the driver's side rear floor is weak. Chrome is very good. It has never been hit, does not have much in the way of door dings, has a small bend on driver's side rear fender, looks like a fat man sat on it. Interior has brand new Clarks vinyl including seats, door panels, arm rests. It badly needs carpet, cardboard/, windlace. Headliner could be saved. Visors need recovering. Has day/night mirror, clock that has exact time twice a day (costs 100.00 to fix it), parking brake alarm, tach, amp meter, oil temp, and boost gauges. It is a PG car which works very nicely with the Judson -- and a turbo will not work with a PG. It has two-speed wipers and correct washer bottle. Jack is nice. Trunk is nice. It no longer has hubcaps, otherwise the pics are accurate.Very complete with books, old service records, spare, etc. Mechanically it is perfect. Everything works and works well. New shocks, suspension bushings, brake master and wheel cylinders, bright bulbs, switches. New brake pads, steering box overhaul. I got it with 28k original miles. After getting it running I put a Judson on it. This is a complete setup with the correct Holley carb, the rare air cleaner pieces. I elected to use A/C motor mounts and filter mount rather than Judson's design which is to crush the filter with a screwdriver to clear the pulley. The orignal Judson carb setup is included but no longer on the car. It now has a Weber 44 IDF -- a great upgrade! It also comes with the two original carbs. The car has a gas heater and it works perfectly. 140 degree hot air in 15 seconds, Fabulous and no odors. Needs a burner kit now and is has too much gas and makes a loud pop when lighting up. Kit included. Tires are correct size radials, new, hard to find. At 46k I did a major rebuild. New engine, PG, conversion to internally regulated alternator, rebuilt U-joints, transaxle, every mechanical running part. I used a 110 block bored 030 over, with new 102 heads and shrouds. The engine was built for a higher performance version usage with the Judson. It has Teflon coated barrels, roller rockers (very cool), fancy rings, ported heads, thicker head gaskets to reduce compression, complete Petronix II ignition and coil with 8mm wires. Done correctly. I had aluminum adapter to the Weber 44 IDF carb. See pictures. It was tricky because the Weber in the center needed fancy machining for moving parts. It uses flush hex head bolts. It is very beautiful. It is fall here and the pics do show leaves but this is one of my daily drivers, driven at least twice a week. An hour outside and ... full of leaves! The 8k miles listed are since the rebuild. It has period dual exhaust, aluminum pan on the PG, and much more I cannot remember. It gets 1-2 more pounds of boost with the Weber (around 5 lbs total boost) even with the much larger engine (almost 170 versus 145 stock). The Judson was fully rebuilt with new vanes, bearings, gaskets, etc. The oiler works perfectly. The Weber is much more driveable and provides much more boost. It is very easy to tune. I have it 95% to my satisfaction. In limited circumstances it can hesitates split second when mildly accelerating. However I am at 3500 feet and a change in altitude will likely force you to fiddle with it anyway. It actually has parts available! Only down side, no choke. In cold weather (say 40 or less) if you have not driven it for a week it is hard to start. You can grind it a lot and start it. I just use a small shot of ether and it fires right up. It will start every time easily even after sitting 12 hours, no matter how cold. It will out accelerate a Spyder easily to 30-40 mph and will cruise effortlessly at 75 mph even on reasonably steep hills. It is a torque monster more than a high reving high horsepower engine. Steering is tight, brakes magnificent. I spent 4800 on the engine and PG alone. The Judson is easily sold for 1000.00 and the Weber with custom manifold was almost another 1000.00. I spent a lot more on the little things. I am asking 6000. This is a screaming bargain and a steal for the right person. Do you want a Judson? Get the car and steal the power train and save yourself a lot of time and money sorting one out. I see several good uses for the car: one, drive as is. It is a fun daily driver and you don't need to worry about chips, door dings, etc.; two, finish the restore -- just needs an easy paint job, cardboard and carpet, detail work. You could pick #1 and do #2 much later; three, which would be a little sad, is to strip it. If you are restoring anything the value of the engine, Judson, PG, brakes, suspension, tires (check prices on new tires with correct whitewall!), etc. will save you gobs of money. In reality I have three times my price into the car, ignoring all the time. I am only selling it because it is getting silly to have to drive a different car almost every day so that they stay in running condition. One less would be good. I do have all kinds of parts we can make a deal on for restoration -- NOS badges, gas heater service parts, and much more. I also have the original powertrain, complete, and actually running well (less than 50k miles). In case "numbers matching" matters. Oh, after all this, it is still ugly! If you only look at the outside this is not the car for you. This is an excellent -- way above average -- mechanical restoration with the uniqueness of the Judson (including all the various carb options including stock carbs w/out Judson and stock Judson carb) and gas heater. It has one of the easiest bodies ever to restore and Clarks has all things interior. But now it is a cosmetic fright pig. I am sure I left things off. Ask questions. I will be happy to help load the car onto a trailer (as long as it is safe) but it will be your job to find someone to bring the car to you. And yes, you can drive it anywhere with pretty good confidence ... but it is 50 years old and more than 1000 miles I'd tow it. I've continued driving it. The Cigar lighter stopped working. I put a new recepticle in -- only to discover it was for Casco and my lighter is Rochester. You have to change one or the other but the knob and Rochester unit are in the glove box. The bulb on the dome light blew although I might have that done shortly -- OK, this is really the driver's side door switch so it is not fixed -- passenger side works fine. We have reached the end of our cold season on the last week or so the gas heater has been popping a lot (too much gas). I believe it needs a new burner kit and this is included. I am strict on the deposit -- 2,000 non-refundable within 48 hours. I prefer you check the car in advance, if you do not, I can try Skype or more photos or ... I will refund the deposit under only one condition, you show up on time to pick it up cash in hand and something is substantially different than I advertised. No, I did not list every chip and wart, that does not count. If you get here and there is no Judson, that would count! This is certainly on odd car for an unusual person that would drive or restore it, or a savy person realizing he would save a fortune in parts by getting my car and stripping it. Please see my feedback. I have sold a LOT of cars, mostly Corvairs, as well as a lot of Corvair parts, and have 100% perfect scoring from ebay. I pride myself in honesty and I am proud of the perfect record. You can rely on the fact that what I have written is gospel. Good luck bidding!
