The Concept and production Scout was developed and ultimately produced in less than two years time. This was a remarkable achievement in the automotive industry in the 60's. The original Scout was created as a competitor to the Jeep and was formally introduced to the public on January 18, 1961. Scout sales through the 1960's exceeded total sales of all Universal Jeeps.
Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum
A 1976 International Harvester Scout II Traveler. This nice runner has had extensive drive train restoration including engine rebuild, transmission and transfer case rebuild, front and rear axles gone through, and much more. The work was done several years ago but the Scout has been sitting the last 5 years or so. Receipts are available and will be included with sale. This vehicle has been inspected for safe operation, and has passed a California Smog test for the County of Sacramento. This Scout is a good solid project rig. It runs very well and all of the mechanical systems seem to function properly. It drives true down the road although a bit rough; common for a 4X4 vehicle of this vintage. The tires are all in decent shape. They have good tread and they are 31x10.5 R15 LT. The two matching front tires are Dominator Radial A/S and the two matching rear are General Grabber ST. The brakes are all in good shape, rears being brand new. The engine idles very well and does not smoke or overheat. The battery is weak and may need replacement soon and the carburetor may possibly need work. To start the engine cold, or after it has been sitting an hour or more, it requires starting fluid. It will not start without it no matter how long you crank. The transmission, transfer case, front, and rear axles all perform as they should. Four wheel drive was tested off road and functioned without issue. The Scout is equipped with air conditioning but the system is not currently in operable condition. The electrical system is in good shape. The alternator charges and the starter cranks easily. All of the lights function properly from the head lights to the tail lights and everything in between. The gauge illumination works fairly well except for the temperature and oil gauge cluster. The windshield wipers function as they should but will require new blades. The heater and defrost work very well. The Scout was wired for a fairly decent stereo system but it appears someone had a greater need for it than we did as it has been removed. There are some aftermarket convenience items that have been installed. These include a currently non working security system (I think the batteries are dead in the fobs), Sunpro Battery/Water Temperature/Oil gauges, a receiver tow hitch, a roll cage/bar, a custom driver's side lap seat belt, and a custom made lockable center console. All of the interior accessories and equipment seem to work properly. The dome lights, controls for the heater, wipers, turn signals, cigarette lighter socket and insert, seat adjusters, etc. function. The horn is a little weak at times but that issue is intermittent. This Scout is ideal for an off road rig, for hunting or fishing, or other activities where scratches, dings, and dents won't ruin your day. The biggest flaw to this vehicle is the outward cosmetic appearances of the interior and exterior. The interior shows its age with torn seats, cracked dash, worn carpet, etc. The sun visors were removed to allow for the installation of the roll cage but are included. The two front doors both have cracks at the upper top sections near the glass and don't seem to shut completely. This could be due to bad or non-existent weather stripping as they stay shut going down the road. On the exterior, there is rust present above both rear wheels and a little down in front of the rear wheels along the rockers. There is also a sizable dent in the left rear quarter section of the body. All of the glass is intact and in good shape except for a small chip in the windshield. The door glass is a little stiff when cranking up or down. I'm sure there are other miscellaneous minor issues to be found but we are not advertising this as a perfect rig. There are numerous spare parts that come with this sale. Just to mention a few, there is a tail gate originally from a truck. The advantage of this tail gate is when you are running around with the full removable top off, you can install this tail gate and have a secure cargo area without worrying about your cargo sliding out the back. There is a set of side glass for the top, a set of quarter windows for the front doors, various mouldings and a grille. There is an original style center console, spare tire, and a rubbermaid tote filled with items such as lenses, ac components, wiring, windshield wiper arms, weather stripping, and other stuff. Overall, this is still a very solid Scout. With a little tlc you can be on your way to great memories. Even the price can't be beat. The opening bid is $1,800.00 and this is a no reserve auction so bid to own. WE WILL NOT SELL THIS VEHICLE OUTSIDE OF AUCTION!!!!!!! So rest assured, your bid will count. Feel free to contact us with any questions or for more information. ***NOTE the aftermarket seat covers were removed and disposed of and the fluids (old used oil put back into the containers) that can be seen in one of the photos was removed and recycled of as well. These items will not be included in the sale of this vehicle.

The History
The International Harvester Company has been producing farm equipment and light, medium, and heavy duty trucks since 1907.
From 1961-1980 the company built a small sport utility vehicle called the Scout. Intended to compete with the Jeep, Ford Bronco, and Chevrolet Blazer, the Scout began as a very basic steel-bodied, two door utility vehicle with off road capability.
As time passed the Scout gradually gained minor styling changes and more options and equipment that improved performance and comfort that made it more attractive to a wider audience.
All Scouts were built in the Fort Wayne, Indiana factory.
For the last four years of production, beginning in 1976, a longer wheelbase version that had an additional 18 inches of length added between the door and the rear wheel well was built called the Traveler. The Traveler had a full length fiberglass top with an upward opening rear glass window that provided weather protection and security to the interior, but which could be removed if desired. The Traveler had a long wheelbase twin with a shorter fiberglass roof, providing a pickup-like cargo bed, called the Terra.
Travelers could be ordered with a wide variety of engine/transmission combinations, different axles, and either two or four wheel drive.
Known for their rugged construction, the Scouts were highly regarded in farm and off-road service but properly equipped; they were useful for daily use and set the stage for the popularity of SUVs in the coming years.
Additional Information
The first Scout was introduced in 1960. A concept for its replacement was initiated in 1964 and approved for production in mid 1965. The Scout II was introduced in 1971. The basic sheet metal remained the unchanged until production stopped on October 21, 1980. During the 20 year period (1960-1980) 532,674 Scouts were produced. The Scout, introduced as a commercial utility pickup in 1960, set the stage for future 4-wheel drive recreational vehicles of the '70s, '80s, and '90s.
The 1976 Scout had the same headlight trim rings as 1975. A chrome center grille of 15 horizontal bars split into three sections was used in this year only.
Starting with late 1974 Scout IIs disc and power brakes were standard features. Early 1974 models had disc brakes as a rarely selected option.
The Traveler was produced from 1976–1980. Travelers had full fiberglass tops with hatchback type liftgates. Most notably different, these models were extended by 18" in the region between the door and the front of the rear wheel well.
The Scout II (made between 1971 and 1980) had the following engine options: the 196 4-cylinder, 232 6-cylinder (early production), 258 6-cylinder (later production), 304 V-8, and 345 V-8. At the time, International did not manufacture a diesel engine small enough to be used in the Scout, and so starting in 1976 used the Nissan SD33 diesel engine as a diesel option. This engine was replaced by the Nissan SD33T turbodiesel engine in 1980.
After 1974 Dana 44 front and rear axles became standard on all Scout IIs. Available gear ratios were 2.72, 3.07, 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, 4.09, 4.27 and 4.54. Trak-Lok limited slip differentials were optional. Axles originally had a tag bolted to their differential cover stamped with their gear ratio, but this tag often rusted off over time or was intentionally removed. The Line Setting Ticket can be checked to identify the axle model, gear ratio, and whether it is equipped with a traction device, using an International parts code book. The location of the ticket varied: 1971–1976 Scout II's had their Line Ticket copies mounted under their hoods, attached to the cowl cover panels.
