Vehicle Detail

This car was originally a German Vehicle purchased in 1982 by its third owner who was a US pilot stationed with the Air Force there. Its original 85 mph odometer reads 7781 miles. It was imported by its third owner who drove it until 1990 when it was put into storage. I purchased this car in 2003 from the widow of that third owner. It had a 150 mph speedometer at that point whose odometer read 11,200 miles. Cleaning up this low mile Porsche included steaming out the gas tank, replacing its CIS injection with a Zenith Carb set-up from Motormeister in Downey, CA, as well as a thorough cleaning of the entire brake system. The Disks and pads were in excellent condition (Very LOW miles!!) but the hydraulic fluid was mud. Its starter was non functional and replaced as was the muffler and several gaskets as well as the oil return tubes which were perforated with rust. The paint was dull, but the body in overall excellent condition. In the past 9 years I have added some 37,000 miles to its total. I have overhauled and replaced a long list of things. Cosmetically, I had the seat upholstery replaced with a dark blue cordoroy as the original black cordoroy was splitting at the seams. I disassembled the entire front of the car, removed both the windshield and rear window to have those areas repainted in 2006- taking care of the chips and scrapes of the front end and the top . I have recently powdercoated the ATS wheels and added new rear tires. I replaced the German Blaupunkt cassette radio (included in this sale too) with an Alpine unit and the single cone door speakers with some premium Eclipse units. There is minimal to no rust on this car, as you would expect from a double phosphated body. The car was repainted before I bought it, but I have no record of who did it or when. It is a 1978 Grand Prix white, not the more cream colored white of 1977. It was a high price job as all the door jams, engine compartment and front trunk area match, but my body man found this fact out when he tried to color match it. There had been some over spray on the original window gaskets, which have now been replaced. There are a few new chips on the front bumper and rear valence panels behind the rear wheels, but you need to LOOK for them to find them. Mechanically, this car has been a wonderful dancer. I replaced its Goodyear Eagles as they had some weather checking after more than 10 years in storage. I installed 195/65-15 HR Toyo Proxess TPT tires and have since up graded to 205/65-15; there are Proxess TPTs on the front and new General Evertreks on the rear. These are both HR rated directional tread tires. Briefly I had some 7" ATS wheels (being sold seperately) with larger 215/65-15 TPTs for the rear. These did NOT clear the wheel lip and are NO LONGER on the car. The original ATS wheels are 6" and are back on the car. The original engine developed a weak cylinder (compression down to 85#), so I bought a rebuilt engine on ebay from a 1974 car which had 60k miles on it, but had benefited from a $8000 rebuild including new valves, guides, cylinders, pistons, timing chains, Carrera style oil fed tensioners, 930 exhaust valve covers, gaskets etc. Its compressions were and remain in the 115-120 range across the board. It starts well, has minimal oil drips, and runs well. This engine has been in the car since 2008 when we also replaced the synchromesh rings on 2nd and 3rd gears. NOTE that the original engine IS INCLUDED in this sale. At the same time, I replaced the original style heater boxes with SSI stainless units and a new Dansk muffler. Additionally, the original Bosch ignition brain box has been replaced with a MDS unit and coil. There are NO issues with starting or running! With the exception of the original muffler and Bosch ignition unit, everything is there to return it to "factory condition" should you so desire. Most recently, I have replaced the clutch, pressure plate, all the brake flexible lines, rear shocks and a few more gaskets(oil breather, oil pressure warning light sender, and thermostat seal) to deal with oil leaks. When I first put this car back into service, I put a Weltmeister short shift kit in as well as replacing the coupling with the shift rod and the input shaft of the transmission. The 850 CCA battery is one year old. This car drives straight and true. It is a clean 2.7 liter car with its original 915 transmission. It shifts well, and takes a corner as a Porsche should. It is tight and rattle free. Its paint is clean and shines well. The seats sit very well, and will hold you as well as any without the numbing of the overly tight sport seat that sits well for an hour and not longer! It has no sun roof, nor A/C. It is an honest and reliable machine. On Feb-26-12 at 07:53:27 PST, seller added the following information: As of Sunday February 26: I have lowered the reserve to make it more interesting. Please note that the vehicle report from ebay does not recognize any of the pre-1978 serial numbers. While I have only data back to 1982, I can report that its body is very clean, all the shut lines are correct and apart from some very minor chips that occur to any car that has been driven, this car is remarkably clean for its age. I have additional pictures if you wish to see them. Call me at 701-523-5992 (home) or 701-523-3239 (office) or you can email me; mine is very similar to my ebay name: carguy1949@ hotmail.com.
