Vehicle Detail

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 (upgraded to 375 HP) 4 speed Muncie with Cowl Induction hood. Frame off restoration restored to stock SS, except for addition of under hood cowl induction components. 0 miles on rebuild. Feel free to call me (Steve) at 619-254-7614 with any questions. Original project purchased from Arizona. "Before" pictures included for review. It did not have the original engine, nor build sheet. It did have: F41 rear sway bar and solid torsion bars with 12 bolt rear end; front disc brakes. SS badging. As can be seen in the "before" pictures, it did not have the tell-tale holes for chrome trim as would a Malibu. This was a "frame off" restoration. The chassis was sand blasted and painted. All bushings replaced. Inner and outer tie rod ends and adjusting sleeves replaced. Casting date (shown in separate picture before paint) on rear axle stamping CCF0821B matches to SS production code. This was an automatic, air conditioned car: the kick-down switch was still on the accelerator pedal; cowl configuration and (previously) sealed vents in the kick panels. The A/C has not been replaced. Hood that was on the car was replaced with a Cowl Induction hood with flapper door. No cowl induction system has been installed. Engine is professionally and custom built from 1970 SS 396 350 HP (upgraded to 375 HP), 4 speed CTX block bored 30 over (forged pistons) with reconditioned and date correct heads with number casting numbers 3993820 date coded G-3-70 and G-9-70 . Motor is not original to vehicle. VIN portion of the stamping pad is blank (see picture of stamp pad). Engine rebuild details are at the end of the description. The master mechanic who rebuilt the engine is happy to talk to potential buyers directly. Rebuilt Rochester 4 bbl Rochester Quadrajet casting no. 7040205 correct for SS 396 350 HP. Note, SS 396 375 HP came with Holly 4 bbl. New gas tank, straps and sending unit. Exhaust manifolds are stock for a BBC, dual mufflers ending in rectangular chrome (cow bell) tips. Nice sound. The engine wiring harness is new. All other wiring has been checked and reconditioned. New rear tail and side marker lights, new dome light. Front marker lights (correct clear lens with amber bulb) will be ordered and sold with car at no additional cost to purchaser. 4-speed Muncie M-20 with a Hurst shifter and Muncie curved-for-bench-seat shift handle and two-piece shift knob were added. A new SS dash with used 1970 instrument cluster (indicators, not gauges) installed. The clock does not work. Correct 70-72 AM radio, which does not power up. Non-tilt steering column professionally rebuilt. Column hazards flashers switch needs to be replaced. Attention has been paid to return the interior to the original as specified by the 762 interior code - bench seat, medium blue with Rivar cloth inserts. The two types of cloth, vinyl and seat welt were purchased out new old stock from SMS Fabrics in Oregon. Bench and rear seats professionally upholstered. The carpet, door panels, head liner, sail panels, and package tray are new. The kick panels are used and have been painted to match. Sun visors are incorrect single support, versus dual. Glove box lock is tight. New ignition key. Doors and trunk are keyed the same. Paint is one year old and is correct Cortez Silver per paint code 14/14, clear coated. There are minor imperfections in the paint job. The body required work at the rear wheel wells as is typical. In addition; in low light and at the right angles, faint tape stripes under clear coat can be seen where SS striping was redone. the black paint used for the stripes has metallic flecks. Not stock but looks great. bit of overspray under the clear coat on right side (passenger side) on top of top trunk deck (see picture, light grey feather appearance). minor blemish on hood, driver's side pin stripe close to nose (see picture, believe this was buffer burn). There are light scratches going across the rear window which can be seen in low light. Rear quarter windows difficult to crank but seat well with help. Rechromed bumpers. New wheel well trim. New weather striping around doors, windows and trunk. New window felt. New rubber bumpers around. 14" factory stock 5 point wheels repainted and fitted with Goodyear Radial T/As 235/60/14's in front, 245/60/14's in rear. One front tire has very little tread left, and is only good for show. Others estimated at 75% life remaining. Posititves: Correct for body by Fisher plate 14/14 paint code Cortez Silver. Correct for body by Fisher plate 762 interior code medium blue bench seat with custom made RIVAR cloth inserts. New interior components. CTX block (not original to car) from 1970 4 speed 396 Chevelle SS Cowl Induction hood. Muncie 4 speed with Hurst shift and correct Muncie shift arm and knob for bench seat. New gas tank Negatives: No front Parking lamps (will be ordered). Column flasher switch does not work. Clock does not work. Incorrect single support sun visors. Radio does not power up, though there is power to it. Minor imperfections in paint as shown in photos. Glove box lock tight. Ashtray loose. Missing front cowl screen.
