Vehicle Detail

1937 Buick Century 1937 Buick Century - the very first Muscle Car. In 1937 Harley Earl had been at General Motors just a few years but creativity through out the company was reaching a fevered pitch. While most people think of the original muscle car as the 1964 Pontiac GTO the real fact is that in 1937 General Motors came out with the first Muscle Car and it wasn’t a Pontiac it was a Buick. The 1937 Buick Century was the combination of the lightweight body of the Buick Special and the large motor of the Buick Roadmaster. The combination of the two allowed the Buick Century to do well over 100 mph and thereby got its name Century for breaking the 100 mile barrier. When it comes to car collecting car collectors like to collect things that are very seldom seen, the word that describes this is ‘rare’. Sometimes cars are rare because of the combination that they possess. The car that you see before you is a rare car because of its combination. We have searched the Internet on many Buick sites and were not able to find any 1937 Buick two-door sedans – they are rare as hen’s teeth. As we understand it there were very few 1937 Buick 2-door sedans or as we call them ‘Square Backs’ produced and the ones that were produced were almost 98% specials that is the small body with the small motor. This one is the Century model, small body, big engine ad really FAST! Then somebody comes along at General Motors with the creativity of Harley Earl and says, ‘why don’t we put the big Buick motor in the small Buick body?’ Bingo! We get the Buick Century. What is nice about this Century is that it is a 2-door sedan, big motor, small body and just to top it off it has side mount tires. That really makes this Buick stand out. The other stand out feature on this car is the fact that it has a very rare and the perfect color for this body style. The engine is the right color, the interior is original and the body has no rust. We call this car ‘sexy’. Just about everybody that sees it calls it highly attractive. Whatever you call it, when you take it to a Buick car show one thing is for sure you are not going to see a lot of other 1937 Buick 2- door sedans with side mount tires, we doubt if you will ever see another one. If you think we are exaggerating go on the Internet and search 1937 Buick and see how many 2-door Century sedans with side mount can you can find. We couldn’t find one. Just to top this off the owner of this car has made this a well-sorted car and takes it on extremely long touring trips. Everything on the car is completely original except for the following: 1. Battery cutoff 2. Electric Fuel Pump 3. Electric Fan for those super hot days when you get caught in non-moving traffic. 4. A six volt alternator, again when you get caught in slow traffic at night you won’t get home with a dead battery. Put all these great features together and you get one fantastic combo of a car that any collector will not only be proud to own but would be delighted to drive across county. It is not often that we see combinations that excite out ‘jaded senses’ but this is one of them. When you buy this car you should not only be buying a great collectible but a good dose of happiness to take along with you. 1937 Buick Century Specifications By Valerie Madison, eHow Contributor Styles • The 1937 Buick Century came in a convertible coupe, sport coupe, convertible phaeton, a two- and four-door sedan, and a two- and four-door touring sedan, according to the Classic Car Database. Buick produced 848 convertible coupes, 1,118 two-door sedans and 21,140 four-door touring sedans (a larger sedan), suggesting that people in that era were looking for larger cars.?? Power • The Buick Century greatly increased in power in 1937, with a straight eight-cylinder, 120-horsepower engine. The newly designed Century could reach speeds of up to 100 mph, making it one of the faster cars on the road. Additionally, the vehicle had rear-wheel drive, 258 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm, an overhead valve engine with five main bearings and a helical transmission. It had a single-plate, 11-inch clutch and a semi-floating axle.?? Steering • The 1937 Century had worm and roller steering, with internal, expanding emergency steering on four wheels. Worm and roller steering allowed for less friction than the traditional steering gear and was a stepping stone to modern, low-friction steering, writes Don Knowles in his book "Today's Technician: Automotive Suspension and Steering Systems."?? Suspension • The front suspension on the 1937 Buick Century had independent coil springs and the rear suspension had semi-elliptic leaf springs. Suspension helps to keep the car fully connected with the road while minimizing vibration and allowing for safer handling.?? Dimensions • The 1937 Buick Century had a wheelbase of 126 inches and measured 203.56 inches in length, 72.25 inches in width and 68.93 inches in height.?? Other Specs • The 1937 Buick Century had an 18-gallon fuel tank, a single exhaust system and a distributer and coil battery.?? The following are some comments from the owner in his own words about the car. The seller has owned the car for 12 years. Car has had a complete engine rebuild with hardened valves, insert bearings and rods. Complete brake rebuild with new lines, shoes, master cylinder, etc. New shocks, fuel pump, carburetor and electricals restored. This car has high speed rear-end gears, which allow it to cruise at 65-70 mph. This is a very sound car. All gauges, speedometer, radio, heater and wipers work. Car has radial tires.
