Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum
A 1961 Ford Falcon Coupe. This Falcon is in need of some T.L.C. It has seen better and brighter days but it is not quite at the end of its useful life. The car is about as original as you might find one of this vintage. The exterior shows signs of its 50 year history with various dents, scratches, dings and flaws covering nearly every surface. The paint is badly faded, oxidized, and flaking in places. The sheet metal is in decent shape minus the dents. There is rust visible but it is pretty much all surface rust. The only bad looking area is the right front fender. That area has paint flaking but the metal itself is not bubbled or flaking. It is a darker rust and would definitely require treatment. The glass on the car is in good shape except the windshield. All of the trim and chrome need polishing and straightening including the bumpers. The tires are old and in need of replacement as well. This Falcon will run and drive. The fuel in the tank is extremely old and has a distinct smell to it. It will need to be cleaned and flushed out. This car has been driven and all three gears shift and engage. The brakes operate. I must add that the car does not run well. While there are no noises coming from the engine to cause concern, the engine runs very rough. This is most likely due to the bad fuel but there is the possibility there are underlying issues. We believe this engine is the 144 C.I.D. the indicators that should be stamped in the block itself are not visible and what little color that is visible isn't enough to determine for certain. The interior is in about the same condition as the exterior. The seats are torn and rotten, the headliner missing. The carpet is faded and worn as well. The interior appears to be complete as far as dash, door panels, seats, etc. To wrap it all up, this is a project car. It is a decent candidate for restoration or ideal for a track or race ar conversion. It would also be a good donor car. Either way you choose, this is a no reserve auction and your bid will count. We will not end this auction early so if you want to make an offer, bid away. For out of state buyers, this car will probably not be able to drive itself onto a transport trailer. Please be aware of this as generally transporters charge extra for cars that need to be winched on.
The History
The post-WWII years for the American auto industry saw a continual trend toward ever larger and more powerful cars. However, a changing economy in the late ‘50s and a rising sales challenge by popular compact imports like the Volkswagen led Detroit to develop their own compact cars. 1960 saw the appearance of the Chrysler Valiant, Chevrolet Corvair, and the Ford Falcon.
While the Corvair was an innovative rear engine, air-cooled design, both Chrysler and Ford developed conventional, but smaller, cars.
The Falcon was a front engine, rear drive platform with a unit body that reduced weight and simplified construction. Initially offered with a modest six cylinder engine of traditional design, the engine was enlarged and optional V-8s became available over the
years.
The Falcon was kept intentionally simple in design and maintenance so owners could do some of their own service and save money. The car was priced just below $2,000 in its basic form and was available in several body styles, eventually including the compact truck-like Ranchero.
Falcons were roomy for their size, rode well, and offered fuel economy in the 20-25 mpg. range.
The Falcon would eventually develop through three design generations and would last as a separate model through 1970.
As was typical of economy cars, Falcons gained additional styling features, options, and more powerful drive trains as the years passed.
