LExterior Color: BlueInterior Color: BlueTitle: Clear DescriptionIn a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space race, 1959 saw the introduction of the Galaxie to the Ford lineup. Using styling from the Fairlane, and a roof line mimicking the Thunderbird, the Galaxie was the high volume counterpart to the Impala. Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A first generation 1959 Ford Galaxie Fairlane 500. The cosmetic restoration makes this Galaxie a head turner. It currently wears a PPG Bahama Blue paint and a freshly refurbished interior. It also rolls on a nice set of chrome baby moon rims and wide white walled tires. The workmanship is not perfect but from 20 feet it looks show quality. This car is an overall solid project and a lot of the hard, expensive work has been completed already. With a little time, of course a little money, and effort, this project could be finished quickly and enjoyed before the end of summer. It starts, runs, and drives but could use some mechanical work. The engine specifically will need some work as it will not idle. It runs a bit rough but once the car is moving, it will drive and accelerate fairly smoothly. It has a new Holley carburetor installed. The transmission shifts solid and smoothly but does leak. The power steering system is not currently functioning as the pump has been removed. It is available and included with the purchase of this car. There is dual exhaust on this car but it is incomplete. We do not have access to a lift so we cannot determine if it is intact and complete from the engine to the muffler or if the dual exhaust has been disconnected and the car returned to single exhaust. The brakes work but if the engine stalls, the pedal goes to the floor and you loose braking ability. Functionality of the systems on the car need some work as well. The turn signals do not flash but do illuminate and the tail lights need some minor work. The right rear tail light is very bright, and the left rear tail light is dim. There are also no reverse lights operating. The glass is all intact and in relatively good shape. The windshield has a few pits in it and some of the side glass has yellowing around the edges. On interior functions, none of the options inside are currently in working order. The fans, radio, dome light, dash illumination, clock, cigarette lighter, etc. are all non functioning. Cosmetically, the weather stripping around the doors is brittle and cracking, there are two holes in the headliner material just above the sun visors, and the paint application quality is ok. There are some areas where there is dirt or dust in the paint. The wiper arms are not installed but are included as well. Also included is a rim for the spare tire with no rubber mounted. The chrome/stainless trim is in good restorable shape but in original condition and as such show the pitting and patina from the last 50 plus years. There is no obvious signs of rust, the trunk, engine compartment, floors and body all look to be rust free. There is some evidence of body work in the left rear corner of the trunk. It appears a section was cut out and replaced. Other than that, it does not look like any other work was done. The undercarriage is in decent shape and only seems to have the common surface rust generally found on the frame, tank, etc. Technical SpecificationsEngine/Driveline Number of cylinders/type: V-8, OHV. Production Information Original list price: $2,589 Production: 121,869 The History The late 1950s saw intense competition for sales among the “Big Three” of Detroit. Cars had gotten longer, laden with chrome, and more extreme in design. For Ford Motor Company the success of their four-seat Thunderbird with its distinctive roof line led to applying that squared-off look to the rest of Ford’s model line. While the ’59 Chevrolet and Plymouth featured prominent rear fins, the Ford, by comparison, featured modest fins, hooded quad headlamps, and a full-width grille featuring four rows of floating “stars”. The ’59 Ford was billed as “the world’s most beautifully proportioned car” and did receive a Gold Medal for exceptional styling at the Brussels World’s Fair. 1959 was the first year of the new Galaxie model which now replaced the Fairlane as the top-of-the-line Ford passenger car. The styling cues from the Thunderbird were carried through all models and the idea of “Thunderbird Elegance” was a common theme in advertising. Solid colors, two-tone paint, and “Style Tone” two-color paint jobs were available. The large, round taillights that had been a Ford styling feature for years continued in 1959. While the most exotic model was the retractable hardtop (its last year of production), the Galaxie was available in two and four-door sedans, hardtops (like this car), and a convertible. Ford’s popularity grew through the 1950s and by the end of the decade had closed to within 12,000 units of the production leader, Chevrolet. In a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space race, 1959 saw the introduction of the Galaxie to the Ford lineup. Using styling from the Fairlane, and a roof line mimicking the Thunderbird, the Galaxie was the high volume counterpart to the Impala.

Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum

A first generation 1959 Ford Galaxie Fairlane 500.

The History

The late 1950s saw intense competition for sales among the “Big Three” of Detroit.
