1998 Mercury Mountaineer 2WD 4.0 SOHC The Good The body and interior of this SUV are in great condition. Only the center armrest needs reupholstering. The tires are in decent condition, and it is loaded with options. The Bad It has a blown head gasket, there is water in the oil. The fuel pump recently went out as well. The vehicle shows 267K miles, but I know most are highway miles. I purchased this SUV from a friend who commuted 50 miles each way to work, hence the high miles. I was going to replace the head gasket, but decided that with 267K, I would be better off replacing the engine with a lower mileage used engine. I have been looking, but couldn't find one locally. Since I don't have a loading dock or fork lift, shipping a motor became cost prohibitive. I would occasionally move the vehicle to circulate fluids and keep the battery charged, but the last time I tried, it wouldn't start. I checked for fuel pressure, and there was none despite adding fuel to the tank. I checked output from the fuel pump relay, and there was power present. It will need a fuel pump (or there is a wiring problem at the tank. The center console lid had a makeshift cover on it, and the back seats will need a good cleaning (the previous owners had dogs riding in back a lot). The leather is still in very good condition. Drop and engine and fuel pump in it and you'll have a nice vehicle. Or part it out and make some money. I have the title in hand, and the vehicle has a non-op on it so there won't be any late fees.
