Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A 1963 Studebaker Avanti. This car is a rolling Body and Chassis. It has no engine or transmission in it or available with it. There are numerous trim pieces missing as well. The body appears to be in good solid shape. No major cracks or damage is visible. The holes for lighting are still present, they are just covered with masking tape. The car comes with a few parts as shown in the photos but that is it. We are not willing to separate any pieces of the car. It is being sold as a package. The frame looks to be free of rust but we have no way of raising the car for any close up detailed inspection. We do not know any detailed history on this car as it was donated to us. We do know that this was either a R1 or R2 originally. We would be happy to supply additional photos and perform any reasonable inspection on the car to help in providing more information so that a potential buyer can make a decision. The below information was referenced from the Avantisource website, Why you should buy an Avanti!Buying collector cars is an emotional process based on little more than hormones and the the desire to piss away money. With this in mind... the following are reasons to buy an Avanti:For all Avanti AutomobilesThey are drop dead gorgeousThey are rare and you won't see one every time you turn a cornerThe fiberglass bodies don't rustGood performanceChic appealSuper exotic car at an affordable priceParts are available and they are not terribly expensive. If maintained, your Avanti will appreciate in value. For Studebaker AvantiThese are the originalsMore performance orientedMore aggressive rake. (The front is low and the back is high)Interiors were standard in nature and reproductions are attainableA variety of supercharged enginesRound headlights! (63')Very high resale value when in good condition.Strong, heavy X frameBuilt in roll bar If you have never owned an Avanti, this is some of what you need to know: All pre 1987 Avanti automobilesEven an 85 Avanti is almost the same car it was 20 years earlier. The Avanti was engineered in 1962 and did not change much until 1987. (An Avanti enthusiast must consider this charming.)The weather stripping is not as soft and does not provide the seal we are used to today. The chassis has numerous grease fittings that require lubrication twice a year. The heating and air conditioning controls are bizarre. (They work... just bizarrely)The sun visors do not swing out to the side.Much of the bright work is not chrome. It is stainless steel.Go to the Technical area of this website and read about Hog Troughs. There are areas of the frame which are prone to rust. Check the frame. A qualified welder can easily repair most problems. The Avanti was one of the first cars to be equipped with disk brakes! Studebaker Avanti AutomobilesAlthough adequate in their day, cars made in the 60's lack the fit and finish we are used to today. Avantis are no exception. All parts are Studebaker. Do you know anyone or can you work on a Studebaker engine? There are purists out there that consider the Studebaker the only "real" Avanti. The Studebaker Avanti had a 289 c.i. engine with a supercharger option. The supercharged ones are the most collectible. No air conditioning with a supercharger! The 63's had round headlights. Most 64's had round headlights in square frames. They are prone to cooling problems. These are raw 60's style muscle cars.Early Avantis did not have drip gutters over the doors.Technical Specifications*Engine/Driveline Number of cylinders/type: V-8, OHV. Production Information Original list price: $4,445 Number produced: 3,834 The History By the early 1960’s the grand old man of the American auto industry, Studebaker, was struggling to survive. A changing industry, consumer tastes, and a series of unfortunate corporate decisions led to declining sales. Interestingly, a last-ditch effort to produce a really unique product led to one of the most impressive and iconic cars ever built by Studebaker. The 1963-64 Avanti was a sleek, powerful sport coupe and the first completely new design from Studebaker in a decade. Famed designer Raymond Lowey and his design team used the Lark convertible chassis to support a fiberglass body. The body was a crisp design with built in safety features, such as a roll bar, and one of the first “bottom breather” front ends in the industry. Several potent engine options were available with a factory-installed supercharger as part of the R-2 option package. Several Avantis proved successful in speed record events and established the car’s credentials as a true performance car. The car was aimed at buyers who might also consider a Corvette, and an unfortunate delay of six months in producing the fiberglass bodies led to the loss of many customers to Chevy. Only 3,834 Avantis were built in ’63 and, as a result of changes in Studebaker leadership, just 809 were built in ’64 before production was ended for good. Sadly, 1966 was the last year for Studebaker, when the company ended all automobile production. Our featured car is a solid candidate for restoration. The car does not have an engine or transmission. The accompanying data panel reflects a stock R-1 Avanti configuration. * These are the specifications for the car as it came from the factory. As mentioned above, there is no engine or transmission in this car. Also, the above options listed are for a complete factory car which this IS NOT. Described as "one of the more significant milestones of the postwar industry", the Avanti (Italian for "forward")was a limited production sports coupé built by the Studebaker Corporation between June 1962 and December 1963.

Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum

A 1963 Studebaker Avanti.

Buying collector cars is an emotional process based on little more than hormones and the the desire to piss away money. With this in mind... the following are reasons to buy an Avanti:

For all Avanti Automobiles

  • They are drop dead gorgeous
  • They are rare and you won't see one every time you turn a corner
  • The fiberglass bodies don't rust
  • Good performance
  • Chic appeal
  • Super exotic car at an affordable price
  • Parts are available and they are not terribly expensive.
  • If maintained, your Avanti will appreciate in value.

For Studebaker Avanti

  • These are the originals
  • More performance oriented
  • More aggressive rake. (The front is low and the back is high)
  • Interiors were standard in nature and reproductions are attainable
  • A variety of supercharged engines
  • Round headlights! (63')
  • Very high resale value when in good condition.
  • Strong, heavy X frame
  • Built in roll bar

If you have never owned an Avanti, this is some of what you need to know:

All pre 1987 Avanti automobiles

  • Even an 85 Avanti is almost the same car it was 20 years earlier. The Avanti was engineered in 1962 and did not change much until 1987. (An Avanti enthusiast must consider this charming.)
  • The weather stripping is not as soft and does not provide the seal we are used to today.
  • The chassis has numerous grease fittings that require lubrication twice a year.
  • The heating and air conditioning controls are bizarre. (They work... just bizarrely)
  • The sun visors do not swing out to the side.
  • Much of the bright work is not chrome. It is stainless steel.
  • Go to the Technical area of this website and read about Hog Troughs.
  • There are areas of the frame which are prone to rust. Check the frame. A qualified welder can easily repair most problems.
  • The Avanti was one of the first cars to be equipped with disk brakes!

Studebaker Avanti Automobiles

  • Although adequate in their day, cars made in the 60's lack the fit and finish we are used to today. Avantis are no exception.
  • All parts are Studebaker. Do you know anyone or can you work on a Studebaker engine?
  • There are purists out there that consider the Studebaker the only "real" Avanti.
  • The Studebaker Avanti had a 289 c.i. engine with a supercharger option. The supercharged ones are the most collectible.
  • No air conditioning with a supercharger!
  • The 63's had round headlights. Most 64's had round headlights in square frames.
  • They are prone to cooling problems.
  • These are raw 60's style muscle cars.
  • Early Avantis did not have drip gutters over the doors.

The History

By the early 1960’s the grand old man of the American auto industry, Studebaker, was struggling to survive.
