Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A 1960 Mercedes-Benz 180 Ponton Sedan. This would be what one would typically consider a "Barn Find". It is relatively complete and fairly solid. The body seems really solid and straight. There is some minor rust holes in the trunk and from inspection underneath, there are some rusted areas in the floors as well. The engine is apart and although there are parts throughout the car, it is unknown if all the necessary parts are there to reassemble the engine. The cars rolls well and steers and brakes. The clutch and gears seem to be good and engage but again, this car does not run so the drivability is unknown. All of the doors open and the latches seem to function. The hood/bonnett and trunk/boot open and close properly but the trunk/boot does not latch. This car was titled and registered in the state of Oregon. It still carries an Oregon Title and 1 rear Oregon license plate. That really sums up our knowledge of this car. We welcome questions and will do our best to satisfactorily answer them. Production Information Original list price: $3,250 Production: 122,684 (all 1960 models) The History In the years immediately following WW II, Mercedes cars had a decidedly pre-war look, with separate fenders and an older style narrow hood and grille. In 1953 Mercedes’ first major restyle produced the so-called “Ponton” series of sedans that would last, on some models, until 1962. While Mercedes in the ‘50s was well known for their luxurious 300 series sedans and convertibles and their superb 300 SL sports cars, the modest 180 and 190 series sedans were the “bread and butter” models for the company. The 180 series, known internally as the W120 was a 1.8L four cylinder model that featured an advanced single overhead cam (SOHC) engine, four wheel independent suspension, and a column-shifted four speed manual transmission. The 180 was the first “small” Mercedes, a type that would prove quite successful for the company. The basic body shell was used for several models with engine displacement as the prime distinction. The 180 and 190 sedans were powered with four cylinder engines while the 220 series featured six cylinder engines. Many of these sedans were powered by optional and very economical diesel engines. One very popular and successful variant of this series was the 190SL that used the sedan chassis and running gear under its stylish two-seat roadster body. In 1961 the car was re-designed as the W110 “Fintail”, a less rounded design with modest rear fins that were a nod to American styling of the period. Known as the Pontoon Mercedes "Ponton", the nickname comes from the German word for "pontoon" and refers to look of pontoon style fenders.
Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum
A 1960 Mercedes-Benz 180 Ponton Sedan. This would be what one would typically consider a "Barn Find". It is relatively complete and fairly solid. The body seems really solid and straight. There is some minor rust holes in the trunk and from inspection underneath, there are some rusted areas in the floors as well. The engine is apart and although there are parts throughout the car, it is unknown if all the necessary parts are there to reassemble the engine. The cars rolls well and steers and brakes. The clutch and gears seem to be good and engage but again, this car does not run so the drivability is unknown. All of the doors open and the latches seem to function. The hood/bonnett and trunk/boot open and close properly but the trunk/boot does not latch. This car was titled and registered in the state of Oregon. It still carries an Oregon Title and 1 rear Oregon license plate. That really sums up our knowledge of this car. We welcome questions and will do our best to satisfactorily answer them.

The History
In the years immediately following WW II, Mercedes cars had a decidedly pre-war look, with separate fenders and an older style narrow hood and grille. In 1953 Mercedes’ first major restyle produced the so-called “Ponton” series of sedans that would last, on some models, until 1962.
While Mercedes in the ‘50s was well known for their luxurious 300 series sedans and convertibles and their superb 300 SL sports cars, the modest 180 and 190 series sedans were the “bread and butter” models for the company.
The 180 series, known internally as the W120 was a 1.8L four cylinder model that featured an advanced single overhead cam (SOHC) engine, four wheel independent suspension, and a column-shifted four speed manual transmission.
The 180 was the first “small” Mercedes, a type that would prove quite successful for the company. The basic body shell was used for several models with engine displacement as the prime distinction. The 180 and 190 sedans were powered with four cylinder engines while the 220 series featured six cylinder engines.
Many of these sedans were powered by optional and very economical diesel engines.
One very popular and successful variant of this series was the 190SL that used the sedan chassis and running gear under its stylish two-seat roadster body.
In 1961 the car was re-designed as the W110 “Fintail”, a less rounded design with modest rear fins that were a nod to American styling of the period.
