Allanté is for those fortunate few who can write their own rules. European road manners, Cadillac comfort, and unlike any ultra-luxury roadster that has come before it, the limited production Cadillac Allanté is constructed of premium German steel, a unique Swiss alloy and exterior trim from France. Italian artisans handcraft its coachwork at the studios of Pininfarina, designer for appointment to Ferrari and Rolls Royce. Two teams of highly trained technicians, after completing a detailed testing procedure, must sign off each vehicle with their own signature. Further proof of Cadillac's commitment to Allanté's integrity. Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum A 1988 Cadillac Allante. At 23 years old, this Cadillac still has it. It presents very nicely with shiny paint, and clean intact interior showing only minimal wear. The exterior has been repainted at some point in history and the body is very straight, showing only very minor dings and scratches. There are a few minor cosmetic issues such as the cracked turn light lens on the front and the dome light/sunvisor apparatus is broken being held together with adhesive. Both tops are in relatively good original condition. The fabric top has some damage to the lower seal and can be seen in the pictures. This car starts and drives well and is in relatively good mechanical condition. There are several small items that would need attention to have this Cadillac in perfect condition. Most of the items are cosmetic and will be addressed later. Mechanically, the AC system is in need of repairs. The Driver's Information Center says it is low on charge. The brake system may also need some attention. The red Brake light indicator in the instrument panel stays illuminated after starting and goes away after a few minutes of driving. It does not seem to have any effect on brake operation but it is definitely worthy of mentioning. Aside from that, this car drives well, accelerates very well, and the steering and handling all feel as they should. This car overall is in good shape and with a little time a patience could make a very nice collectible item. There are numerous functions and options on this car, some of which do not operate or appear as they did when new. The LCD displays are showing signs of age but still operate and are still fairly legible. Some of the other items needing attention are the power antenna, rear window defrost, both seat adjustment controls are intermittently inoperative, the little light inside the center compartment is out, the cigarette lighter does not work, the switch to remotely open the trunk does not work, the passenger door lock does not operate by the switch and has to be used manually, and as mentioned above, the dome light apparatus that secures the sunvisors is not working and is held together with glue. With this car being 23 years old, there may be some other minor items that we did not find in need of repairs. This car has a low reserve. Production Information Original list price: $56,533 Number produced: 2,569 The History When people think of Cadillac, depending on their age, they tend to think of the grand touring cars of the 1930’s or perhaps the prestigious and ever-so-massive road yachts of the late 1950’s. Generally, the thought of a luxury two-seat sporting automobile is not part of the picture. In the late 1980’s with the dominant popularity of the Mercedes SL class two-seaters, Cadillac decided they wanted to beat Mercedes at their own game. Using a modified front wheel drive chassis from the Eldorado and an Italian, Pininfarina-designed body, the car was actually built in both Detroit and Turin, Italy. The chassis were shipped to Italy where a dedicated factory was established to build the body shells from high quality German steel with aluminum hood and rear deck lids. The cars were then shipped back to Detroit for installation of the running gear and interiors. The cars were lavishly equipped with a removable hard top included along with a cloth convertible top as well. Only a factory-installed mobile phone was optional. The Allante was intended, like the Mercedes, to be a luxury touring car for two, rather than a high performance sports car. Despite the cachet of the Italian design and the intense attention that each car received, the car was not a roaring success with the public. Cadillac predicted sales of 4000 for the first model year, 1987, but were only able to sell 1651 out of 3363 actually built that year. Allante production was halted in 1993 after 6 years of flagging sales. As a result Allantes are a rare sight on the highways and those that remain are true collectible cars. Although modern in age and design, Allanté retains all the sense of a classic Italian beauty. Allanté is for those fortunate few who can write their own rules. European road manners, Cadillac comfort, and unlike any ultra-luxury roadster that has come before it, the limited production Cadillac Allanté is constructed of premium German steel, a unique Swiss alloy and exterior trim from France. Italian artisans handcraft its coachwork at the studios of Pininfarina, designer for appointment to Ferrari and Rolls Royce. Two teams of highly trained technicians, after completing a detailed testing procedure, must sign off each vehicle with their own signature. Further proof of Cadillac's commitment to Allanté's integrity.
Offered For Sale by the California Automobile Museum
A 1988 Cadillac Allante. At 23 years old, this Cadillac still has it. It presents very nicely with shiny paint, and clean intact interior showing only minimal wear. The exterior has been repainted at some point in history and the body is very straight, showing only very minor dings and scratches. There are a few minor cosmetic issues such as the cracked turn light lens on the front and the dome light/sunvisor apparatus is broken being held together with adhesive. Both tops are in relatively good original condition. The fabric top has some damage to the lower seal and can be seen in the pictures. This car starts and drives well and is in relatively good mechanical condition. There are several small items that would need attention to have this Cadillac in perfect condition. Most of the items are cosmetic and will be addressed later. Mechanically, the AC system is in need of repairs. The Driver's Information Center says it is low on charge. The brake system may also need some attention. The red Brake light indicator in the instrument panel stays illuminated after starting and goes away after a few minutes of driving. It does not seem to have any effect on brake operation but it is definitely worthy of mentioning. Aside from that, this car drives well, accelerates very well, and the steering and handling all feel as they should. This car overall is in good shape and with a little time a patience could make a very nice collectible item. There are numerous functions and options on this car, some of which do not operate or appear as they did when new. The LCD displays are showing signs of age but still operate and are still fairly legible. Some of the other items needing attention are the power antenna, rear window defrost, both seat adjustment controls are intermittently inoperative, the little light inside the center compartment is out, the cigarette lighter does not work, the switch to remotely open the trunk does not work, the passenger door lock does not operate by the switch and has to be used manually, and as mentioned above, the dome light apparatus that secures the sunvisors is not working and is held together with glue. With this car being 23 years old, there may be some other minor items that we did not find in need of repairs. This car has a low reserve. For a Cadillac enthusiast, this would make a fine addition to the collection.

The History
When people think of Cadillac, depending on their age, they tend to think of the grand touring cars of the 1930’s or perhaps the prestigious and ever-so-massive road yachts of the late 1950’s. Generally, the thought of a luxury two-seat sporting automobile is not part of the picture.
In the late 1980’s with the dominant popularity of the Mercedes SL class two-seaters, Cadillac decided they wanted to beat Mercedes at their own game.
Using a modified front wheel drive chassis from the Eldorado and an Italian, Pininfarina-designed body, the car was actually built in both Detroit and Turin, Italy. The chassis were shipped to Italy where a dedicated factory was established to build the body shells from high quality German steel with aluminum hood and rear deck
lids.
The cars were then shipped back to Detroit for installation of the running gear and interiors. The cars were lavishly equipped with a removable hard top included along with a cloth convertible top as well. Only a factory-installed mobile phone was optional.
The Allante was intended, like the Mercedes, to be a luxury touring car for two, rather than a high performance sports car. Despite the cachet of the Italian design and the intense attention that each car received, the car was not a roaring success with the public. Cadillac predicted sales of 4000 for the first model year, 1987, but were only able to sell 1651 out of 3363 actually built that year.
Allante production was halted in 1993 after 6 years of flagging sales. As a result Allantes are a rare sight on the highways and those that remain are true collectible cars.
