Vehicle Detail
Up for bid is a '77 240D. I purchased this vehicle in April of 2004 in Dallas, Texas and drove it home (1500 miles) to Clinton, Ohio. No problems, 50 - 65 mph, about 35 mpg. Garaged it in the winter months for about 3 years, then my daughter took it to college (Dayton) for a year. She graduated in '10 and has come back to Northeast Ohio and uses it as a daily driver to work. When I bought the vehicle it had about 179K on the odometer. I knew that one day I'd be rebuilding the engine (low compression), but I tended to R/R components (alternator, flex disc, rotors, glow plugs, etc...) to keep it mechanically sound. Finally in Feb. of '09, I purchased sleeves, rings, valves and guides, bearings (main & rod), oil pump, sprockets, timing chain, rails, tensioner, mounts, all the gaskets (head, lower, valve cover, oil pan) and did a complete overhaul. Parts, machine shop, and labor ran about $2900. The cylinder compression came back to 320 and the oil pressure pegs at 45. I change oil and filter at about 3500 miles and the antifreeze is about 2 years old. I have a block heater installed in case it sits in the cold, and the rear windshield has a new gasket. The A/C never worked (frozen piston in the compressor (York), so I removed it and the bracket to give more access in reaching the starter and alternator (both replaced in '10). I had trouble with the ignition earlier this year, so I replaced the tumbler (key), the ignition switch, and the neutral safety switch. The windows are manual, the interior is in good condition (no tears in the seats), and there are 4 new shocks ('10). The front tires are worn (195 70R 14's) and the rear's have decent tread. The body is OK, but the fenders and rockers are showing some corrosion. I've worked on Mercedes' for about 25 years, owned 7, and have always been more concerned with mechanics than cosmetics. Comes with many, MANY spare parts. A 109 fuel tank is included if you're inclined to do the bio-diesel conversion; I just never had the inclination to get into fuel processing. Sorry for the rambling randomness in my description. Any questions, call Mike at 330-396-1536. Thanks for looking!
