1959 BMW Model R50, Original Survivor Offered for your consideration is a vintage 1959 BMW Model R50 motorcycle. The motor is a two cylinder, horizontally opposed, OHV engine of 500cc displacement. The motor and frame are original matching numbers, and the odometer reads just over 41,000 miles. I recently acquired this bike from an older gentleman who purchased it second hand in 1966. My area of expertise is in early American motorcycles, and although I am not real familiar with BMW’s, I would consider this a very nice original vintage motorcycle. It does show its age, and is by no means pristine, but it is a very respectable survivor and has a certain charm from over a half century of enjoyment. I installed a new battery and some fresh fuel, and she fired right up. It runs, shifts through all the gears, and both brakes are functional. I think the paint, or at least some of it, was redone long ago, as it has a nice old patina to it. The only obvious thing that I feel would be a “must replace” are the mufflers, as time and moisture have taken their toll on them, and left them with the typical rusted out tips. Whether you leave it as a survivor, or choose to fully restore, this is a wonderful vintage motorcycle you are sure to enjoy. I have a clear New Jersey title in my name.
