Vehicle Detail
1979 Mercedes Benz 300SD, last chance to bid. The car will not be re-listed. This auction has NO RESERVE. I know there are a lot of choices out there in the used Mercedes Benz Market Place, this is probably one of the first cars listed on the internet you should look at. I am the guy people take along to look at Mercedes Benz cars when they go shopping. I have been driving Mercedes Benz for as long as I can remember and was raised in Mercedes Benz cars. Also I have seen a few examples listed on here lately with very low mileage claims. I am not questioning the integrity of the people that are selling these cars, but if you are making such claims, you better have a folder with receipts, several inches thick, showing a consistent accumulation of miles over the years while routine maintenance was performed. This car could easily pass for having half or even only a quarter of the miles it actually has accumulated. Think for a second, if a car was only driven a few thousand miles in 30 plus years, don’t you see the problem, unless it is in a Museum with a full time staff that is skilled in the preservation of cars ! What you do want to see is an even accumulation of miles over the years. Also educate yourself, Google ‘Mercedes-Odometer-Speedometer Problems’ All European cars of this vintage are plagued with frail little gears inside their Speedometer/Odometers, that break easily, slip, work occasionally or just simply stop working altogether at some point of time. Given my extensive background on Mercedes Benz vehicles and being an enthusiastic collector myself I will attempt to be as honest as possible in describing this vehicle, please also look at my feedback and bid with confidence. This particular car came to me a little over a year ago, I wasn’t really looking for a car, since I have to many cars already but I am huge fan of the W116 S Class and especially the OM617 Turbo Diesel powered cars. And when a car this exceptional comes along, who could say no ? I could see right away that this particular example had been well cared for, somebody took very good care of this car and it shows. It is not a Museum piece or show car but a very decent looking Driver ! The odometer shows 133798 miles and I would be very inclined to accept that as an accurate figure. From the documentation that came with the car it appears to have had three previous owners. The vehicle was always a Western car and it shows in having no Rust or ever having had any Corrosion damage or repair. I have driven many Mercedes Benz diesel’s and this one runs good, is very powerful and the transmission shift’s accurately and most importantly very smooth. Having spent some of its lifespan in Montana, there are stone chips present. It must have been garaged during the winter season and was strictly used as a summer car ! A very common problem with Mercedes Benz cars of this vintage is the rear seat losing its stuffing material, it will look like a deflated balloon and if not addressed will affect the Upholstery seating material. Both top and bottom rear seat pads on this car have been replaced with good MBZ pads. Go ahead, price those pads and the labor ! Also the Drivers side Window Regulator and Motor have been replaced, which also is a common problem. The passenger window was not working but we recently purchased some replacement power window switches and hopefully that will remedy that situation. The air-condition does not turn on upon activation but perhaps just needs to be recharged, a label affixed in the engine compartment indicates some servicing but the car has not been retrofitted to R134, which is a plus, since most industry leaders now no longer recommend that conversion on older cars that were designed to run on R12, when serviced correctly, R12 works great and is not any more harmful for the environment then the other stuff. The body of the car appears to be as straight and lined up as you are going to find on an older car. All the doors open and close with precision, as they should. The dashboard does have a few cracks from age and being exposed to the sun. The rest of the interior is pretty nice. The original Becker AM/FM radio is retained but the power antenna needs a new mast. The mast can be obtained at Autohaus AZ for $35 or you can buy a new Hirschmann Antenna for $ 53.95 The right inside rear door panel has a small imperfection, ask for a detailed picture. The left rear door, has a small dent below the trim. One fog-light lens has a crack. The ashtray looks as if it has never has a cigarette in it. I am not a car dealer, the carpets have not been shampooed, the engine has not been steam cleaned and the paint has not been buffed to death. If you ever bought a car that was prepared that way, you will appreciate the honest condition this car is in. The car drives like a dream, you know you found a jewel the moment you get behind the wheel. I have driven Mercedes Benz Cars that are barely five years old and drive a lot worse then this one. These cars were made to last forever ! These cars are getting harder to be found in this condition and prices certainly reflect the investment potential of the Turbo Diesel W116. A few useful websites for information on these beautiful cars are listed below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W116 www.w116.org Having said all that, be realistic, it is a 32 year old car. I have attempted to be as honest as I can, by listing known defects about the car in great detail above. I welcome anybody to come by and take this car for a test drive or sent an independent professional third party to inspect this vehicle.
