Vehicle Detail

Electric Car, Electric Porsche 914 - NO GAS! Real 35 miles per charge at 60mph. You can get more if you go 40 on back roads up to 43 miles. Has 16ea STM5-180 Saft Ni-Cads (105V) originally $750ea ($12k) with 40k miles about 1K cycles, rated for 3K cycles so batteries are still in good condition. Measures 330wh per mile at wall outlet. So at 10c per kWh that's about 3.3c per mile. Converted in 06. 7.2" Prestolite motor with good brushes/bearings. I've driven the vehicle to-from work for the last 40k miles since it was converted. The speedo mileage is over limits since the speedo (and most everything) was replaced as two cars were combined to get the best of both. Curtis E-F "fuel" guage but I'm on a fixed mission profile to & from work & work doesn't move 30 miles one way & about 10 miles at lunch on errands so about 70 miles per day (charge at work). See www.evalbum.com/1273 for more info and our club www.reevadiy.org for RE & EV projects. Water batteries every 3K miles at tail end of charge but it doesn't have a drinking problem. Waterlink linked tubes make it quick till it pees out the exit tubes. There's a spit detector on the charger, if it starts spitting at the end of the dv/dt=0 charge algorithm it shuts off to prevent electrolyte loss. The 600A speed control uses 1200A IGBT's,diodes and 12k worth of low ESR caps & runs fairly cool, not hot to the touch. I lowered the controller frequency since I was the major cause of road kill, but now no animals run in front of the car anymore and it's quiet inside the cab, just hear the road/tires/wind. There's 4 spare tires & aluminum rims. The tires on the car are in good condition also. Comes with tow bar to pull to shows and parades beyond range. It passed the annual vehicle inspection. Clear Title. It's not a race car, goes up to 65mph about in 15 seconds, not fast acceleration keeping amps below 500A so you don't break the tranny or speed control. The control has a safety shut off when you release the peddle and a bypass contactor for full on efficiency. Never press the peddle down while turning the key, it has a high peddle lockout but it can be bypassed by dummies crash through their garage wall. There's a cross brace (see photos) that stabalizes the front end on the highway. If you're much taller than me 5'8" you may find this objectionable. I've got $13.5k in parts into it so even if you use the guts for something else you'll come out ahead. There's extra giblets boxes, two tranny parts boxes (one from AAMCO that trashed, took apart one & couldn't put it back together). I replaced the tranny last month with another 5 speed with better synchros. Due to the long throw 6' linkage in the Porsche 914 you haveto push the clutch peddle almost all the way down to shift. There's a Porsche guru of 914 Limited in Peoria Illinois that you should become friends with for any 914 parts, he has everything. I bought a undercarraige chassis kit from them and MIG welded underneath to replace the rusted metal & floorpans. The targa top comes off and can be stored in the trunk or left at home which I usually only do at parades since at work I usually get caught in a thunderstorms. There's a blow-dryer under the steering column anda electric heater core replacement for heat (but the blow dryer works better. I keep it in the garage and that's the best place for an older car and batteries so they don't get to cold in the winter but NI-Cads are less sensitive to cold than lead is. All the vehicle wiring was redone and a modern fuse box installed, all ATF/ATO blade fuses labeled and I have a full set of schematics for you. You should enjoy working on your own cars & projects and have goo electrical/mechanical ability since you can't take it to your local Porsche dealer for service. I'll help as much as possible answering questions. I convert a vehicle about every 5 years since the 70's and am now working in a Ghia so need to sell this one to get $$ for the batteries on the next. The paint is ok, some bumps/lumps from bondo, not perfect and a dent inthe rear middle I noticed (probably in a parking lot), see photo. Well that's the Good, Bad & Ugly of the car. It always gets attention in parades and at electric car shows ane Porsche shows and kids like the flippy headlights in parades zig-zaging. For more info call Mark at 540-473-1248 or email.
