Vehicle Detail
Well where to begin. I am listing my 1968 Mercury Park Lane Brougham HARDTOP just like the one seen in Hawaii Five-0. Most people are unaware that there was a sedan version and a hardtop version. The hardtop does not have the post between the windows and the rear window is different. When I set out to find a “FIVE-0” car I thought this should be pretty easy as they made a ton of them. Well they did make a lot of them but try to find one. I found Park Lanes, I found Park Lane sedans, I found 2 Park Lane sedans that were Broughams (one was trashed). I found a half way decent Park Lane hardtop but it was not a Brougham. Try to find a hardtop Brougham is challenging. I found mine and the gentleman would not sell. A year and a half later I got a call he would sell it. The car was in Phoenix, Az. its first 30 years and in storage the other 10. The car was basically rust free. The interior was sun baked and shredded. Good news was the guy also had a Park Lane sedan which was a Brougham which had an almost spotless interior like the one in the Five-0 car. I stripped the sedan of all the parts I could. I believe this one still has its original muffler (that’s an Arizona car for you). The car was originally lime green with green interior. Now it is all TRIPLE BLACK. I stripped the car of all door handles, emblems, bumpers, etc. and had door jambs, etc. and car painted black. The paint job is very acceptable but is not a 5000 dollar paint job. I had a friend do it and is very nice but not perfect. Interior out of sedan parts car was a wine color originally and was died with SEM dye. Seats and door panels really turned out nice. I had a new vinyl top installed (almost left the original on), new carpet, new battery, tune up, carburetor rebuilt, NOS emblems on trunk and above grille, lots of detailing to original emblems, etc. New wood grain appliqué has been installed on all of the side trim. Car has original trunk mat, cardboard fillers on sides, original jack, tire cover, etc. The Brougham package has different door panels, 60/40 split front seats (mine has power on both sides), white pin stripping, wood grain steering wheel, Brougham emblems, etc. Car has tilt, power windows AND EVEN POWER VENT WINDOWS. I have the original build sheet. Car has original front mats with Mercury script. Car has a 390 4 barrel. Chrome bumpers are in great shape, glass is all good, and undercarriage is nice (these had a box frame and most of these cars rusted away). There is one small 2” tear in the headliner, antenna needs hooked up to radio, A/C not hooked up--working condition is unknown, needs engine detailed (I have started but not finished), needs a couple small oil leaks fixed (I’ve had new oil pan and valve cover gaskets installed). Had compression check done and all cylinders were good. Car has 99,000 miles. It’s a nice rust free example. I also have some extra parts for the car (NOS muffler, trim pieces, door panels, etc.). Tires on car are good. The pictures will tell you a lot. If you have any questions email me at gater1961@frontier.com Please contact me only if you are serious. I am not a tire kicker buyer and don’t waste peoples times so please don’t do it to me. Would love to talk to you though if interested. If you are a Hawaii Five-0 fan and have always liked that big black Merc on the show here’s one almost just like it. Once again, I got fooled when I set out to buy one of these. There’s lots of Monterey’s, Park Lanes, Park Lane Sedans, and not many Park Lane HARDTOPS. And it gets real hard to find a Brougham in the Hardtop version. So, car is sold as is where is with no warranties expressed or implied. I reserve the right to end auction early as car is advertised elsewhere. I require a $1000 NON REFUNDABLE in 24 hours----that says NON-REFUNDABLE deposit to my paypal account at end of auction (if not received in 24 hours I reserve right to sell to another buyer). When you take a deposit that means I will not sell the car to anyone else if you buy it. I love holding a car for 5 days for someone, turning away other potential buyers and have someone then say they want their deposit back when I have turned others away because they have changed their mind, can’t get the money, wife said no, have to sell their car first, etc so please have all the normal BS excuses out of the way before bidding. I request balance be paid in full within 5 days (cash in person, wired to my banking account) etc or you will be stating you no longer want the car, will not be asking for deposit back which is non-refundable, and car be be sold to other parties as you are forfeiting your rights to the car. Gosh how I hate all this stuff. I urge you to come see the car before bidding. Looking at it after buying it and then coming to get it and renegotiating a price and coming and nit picking ain’t gonna get it. I had a guy once from Kentucky do this and he wanted another car I had for 3000 less then what he agreed to pay. I had to call the State Police to remove him from my property. I sold the car to an architect in New York for 4000 more then what he was going to originally pay for it (a very nice 61 Lincoln owned by someone famous in the auto industry). I am a nice easy going guy and like cars like the next guy but when I buy one I am a serious buyer and seller. I am not a dealer. It’s not a game so treat me the way I treat others. Gosh, once again how I hate all this. Anyway, hope it goes to a nice home and I know I will have regrets for selling this one as finding another will be extremely challenging. Now, and lastly, how many emails will I get asking the reserve?????? Email me your phone number if you are a serious buyer and we can discuss price. Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs. I will be happy to help with arrangements. Car is located at zip 47802. On Aug-13-11 at 16:17:53 PDT, seller added the following information: Hello- Lots and lots of emails. I took the car to a car show down the road about 2 miles away today and it ran great (first one its been to). I was known as Steve McGarrett at the show. Its amazing how many people know that car and states what a great show Hawaii Five-0 was. When cleaning it off real quick I did notice some very little rust popping through the front lower corner of the front bumper. Most people would not even notice it but wanted to disclose it. I put some new brake light bulbs in today as one was out. I have had questions regarding rust issues. There is only some very minor surface rust on the undercarriage as any car would have. This is one rock solid car. Most are probably familiar with the rust that happens at the rear of the back window that gets trapped under the molding and you have all the soft spots under the vinyl top in that area or that acculate under the vinyl top at all areas. When the guy stripped the vinyl top off he was amazed at the condition. There was absolutely no rust anywhere. All of the lower fenders, wheel wells, and everything were extremely solid on this car before painting it. I have pictures of the car when I bought it. I have had several emails on people who own 68's that have replaced frames and sections of them as they were known for rusting frame issues. Maybe this is why they are so hard to find. As I stated the paint job is nice and presentable but not a $10M dollar job. This car was so rust free the new buyer may want to drive it a couple of years and strip it and do a very high quality job on it. I think it would be worth it. But it is a very presentable job the way it is. The car still needs a few little thinks done but nothing major at all. The key to this car is the rock solid rust free body and frame AND that it has an original very very nice interior (seats/door panels/etc) that cannot be replicated when one wants a Brougham. I've had emails from Dallas, the state of Washington, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Boston, and Florida. As I stated its amazing what image this car projects and what it stands for. The new owner will be blown away at the recognition, comments, thumbs up, and amount of book 'ems you will receive. Once again, this is not a 100 point show car but a nice driver for shows and to have fun. I dont want to deceive anyone. It has things left to do to it but thats the fun of buying one. I know this car is tough to find. I have a gentleman that is flying in from Dallas to Indiana to look at it on Tuesday. That will give others an idea of its rarity. He said he has been looking with no luck and his wife is an Hawaii Five-0 lover and wold love to get it. If car does not meet reserve I will contact high bidder first. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Oh yah, forgot to mention the clock does not work. Good luck and thanks for all the emails. On Aug-15-11 at 15:15:53 PDT, seller added the following information: Hello again- Forgot to mention I also had a new steering box put on the car and something else but cant remember (old age is no fun). I will look for the receipt. It didnt really need anything else. Also, I wanted to post this link that the previous owner had on the net and this is how I found the car. It is pics of car in Az. (about 10 years ago) and it was delivered new on July 2, 1968. Nice solid body. Thanks http://www.winternet.com/~429cj/parklane.html
